Abstract

This study discussed English idioms and their renderings. It focused on the strategies used in translating idioms and their renderings fidelity. This research was descriptive in nature. The data were obtained from a novel written by Stephenie Meyer entitled Twilight and the rendering in Indonesian under the same title translated by Lily Devita Sari. The population of this research was all of the sentences containing English idioms within Twilight and the renderings in the Indonesian version of the novel. To get the sample, this research applied total sampling. Therefore, all of the data were analyzed one by one. To judge the strategy used by the translator, translational equivalent method was applied. Likewise, to search the fidelity of the renderings, translational equivalent method was also applied. Based on the strategy used, most idioms in the novel were translated by paraphrase (87 idioms) and only a few idioms were translated by using idioms of the same meaning and dissimilar form (2 idioms). Due to the fidelity of the renderings, most idioms in the novel were translated faithfully by adhering the meaning fidelity (67 idioms). Some other idioms, however, were translated unfaithfully (20 idioms). Key Words : idioms, translation, fidelity.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding the translation features of song lyric translation and judging the singability level of the translated song. The research was descriptive qualitative in nature. The data to be analyzed was taken from the soundtrack of Frozen Movie by Disney entitled “Let It Go”. This soundtrack was chosen because of its  popularity amongst the society. Besides, this song had been translated into Indonesia both for dubbing and subtitling. Here, the translated version taken as the data was the one which was applied in dubbing. The result of the research showed that mostly used translation feature was the use of rhyme. Unfortunately, the rhyme of the original song were mostly translated into non-rhyming words. The other features that were also contributive were omission of words and use of paraphrase respectively. The analysis on the singability level was also showed an interesting result. The prosodic match reached the high level while the poetic match reached the middle level.   Keywords: song lyric, translation, dubbing

Abstract

Memes are internet popular culture. They have so many topics, and one of them is darkhumor. Dark humor treats some taboo matters such as deformities, murder, suicide, disease,tragedy, pedophilia, and other in a cynical way. This research focuses on analyzing types ofimplicature and the humorous devices found in the dark memes; therefore, this study aims todiscover what kind of implicature is contained in the dark meme and what kind of humorousdevices that is used in the dark meme. This research is descriptive qualitative research, andthe data used in this research are dark memes and retrieved from reddit.com. The analysisshows that conversational implicatures and conventional implicatures are found in the darkmemes texts. There are some topics that are implicitly mentioned in the dark memes such asdeformities, necrophilia, sexual abuse, disease, murder, violence, stereotypes, pedophilia,death, tragedy, and suicide. Some humorous devices that are found in the dark memes areirony, satire, understatement, wit, aphorism, and sarcasm. Keywords: meme, dark memes, humor, implicature, humorous devices

Abstract

This research aimed at  describing translation shifts and its accuracy that happen in IndonesianEnglishtranslationofnovelPasungJiwa.Translationshiftisthechangesthatoccurwhenatextistranslatedintoanotherlanguageduetoeitherthedifferencesbetweenthetwolanguagesorthetranslator’schoices.Inthisresearch,thewriterusesCatford’stheoryoftranslationshiftandNababan’stheoryofTranslationQualityAssessment.Thisresearchisconsideredasdescriptivequalitativeresearch. All of the data are in the form of words, phrases, and clauses which arefound in novel Pasung Jiwa and its translated version. Those data are taxonimized into fivedifferent types of translation shifts. The analysis shows that there are 331 shifts found in novel;level shift is 47 (14%), class shift is 27 (8%), structure shift is 93 (28%), unit shift is 103 (31%),and intra-system shift is 61 (19%). In term of accuracy, 154 data are considered accurate (46%),152 data are considered less accurate (46%), and 25 data are considered inaccurate (8%).Keywords: Translation shift, translation quality assessement, translation technique, translationaccuracy, translation shift in Pasung Jiwa
