Abstract

In the current post-truth era, the traditional authority and credibility of Ulama, who have historically been regarded as the paramount source of religious knowledge, are increasingly compromised. This research investigates the diminishing role and efficacy of Indonesian Ulama in addressing religious and social challenges due to the pervasive influence of the Internet and social media, which provide rapid and seemingly authoritative solutions that overshadow traditional scholarly roles. The study employs a mixed-method approach, integrating observations, interviews, and comprehensive library research, incorporating both physical and digital sources. The findings elucidate three critical issues: first, the limited digital literacy among traditional Indonesian Ulama, which impedes their effective engagement with digital platforms; second, a notable gap in the public's comprehension of how to utilize digital media for religious discourse, despite an increasing interest in religious matters; and third, the superficial understanding and heightened biases among the public, stemming from the ease of accessing religious solutions via social media. This study makes a significant contribution to the discourse by underscoring the urgent necessity for Ulama to enhance their digital literacy, thereby reclaiming their authoritative role in the socio-religious landscape and ensuring that their insights remain relevant and accessible in the digital age.

Abstract

This research discusses the influence of the Sufi interpretation of the Qur'an in shaping cultural narratives and political discourses in Muslim society. This study addresses the under-explored influence of Sufism beyond its spiritual domain, specifically in cultural and political spheres. This study aims to fill this void by exploring how the Sufi interpretation of the Qur'an influences contemporary cultural identity and political dynamics. The methods used in this study are multidisciplinary approaches, including analysis of Sufi literature, art, and social practices. The study's findings suggest that Sufism has a significant role in shaping cultural narratives, promoting tolerance and social justice, and providing a framework of thought that influences political discourse in Muslim communities. This study recommends that future studies focus more on Sufism's contribution to Islamic political thought and its relevance in the modern context. This research also emphasizes the importance of considering the spiritual dimension in analyzing cultural and political phenomena to understand the role of religion in shaping the social and political landscape more comprehensively.

Abstract

The advent of science and technology, which has resulted in the digitalization of the Indonesian Muslim community during the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the advent of Society 5.0, has prompted a shift in the religious literature of Indonesian Muslims. This research aims to examine the impact of digitalization in the post-truth era on the behavior of Muslims who tend to seek solutions to their religious problems outside the traditional religious authority. The data sources for this study were collected through observation, interviews, and a review of relevant literature in the form of documents or online data. In terms of socio-religious factors, this research identified three key elements that have contributed to the shift in the religious literature of Indonesian Muslims from the ulama to social media. Firstly, the internet and social media provide Muslims with convenient access to information and resources that can address their daily religious concerns promptly and effectively. Secondly, the rise in community religious activity has not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in digital literacy, particularly in the use of social media. Thirdly, the solutions to religious problems obtained by Muslims through social media are immediate, leading to a less comprehensive and more partial understanding of Islam. Digitalization has led Indonesian Muslims to be more pragmatic in search of religious meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the interconnection of these meanings as a unified semantic structure using Toshihiko Izutsu’s Qur’anic semantic approach. This qualitative library research gathers data from tafsir works, Arabic dictionaries, and literature related to Izutsu’s semantic theory. The findings reveal that the basic meaning of qaşd as-sabīl is “the intended purpose of a path,” which, in its semantic relations, may refer to the straight path, salvation, guidance, Islamic law, and others. Historically, the meaning evolved from a general context (pre-Qur’anic), to more theological and specific (Qur’anic), and then to interpretive and contextual meanings (post-Qur’anic). The worldview behind this term shifted from general life purposes to the mission of conveying Islamic teachings. The diversity of interpretations is due to a structured relationship between its core meaning and its relational meanings shaped by semantic networks, historical context, and worldview constructions. Therefore, Izutsu’s semantic approach proves effective in revealing the complex and profound dimensions of qaşd as-sabīl in the Qur’an.

Abstract

This study explores the role of harmony in multicultural societies and how the values contained in the Quran can contribute to creating a harmonious environment. The issues investigated include the challenges multicultural communities face, such as the potential for conflict and discrimination, and the importance of building respectful relationships among diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. The research design employs a qualitative approach with content analysis of relevant Quranic texts alongside in-depth interviews with community leaders and religious figures. The analysis results indicate that values of harmony, such as tolerance, mutual respect, and cooperation, are strongly emphasized in the Quran. The main findings also suggest that applying these values in daily life can reduce group tensions and foster positive collaboration. Additionally, communities that embrace the principles of harmony tend to be more socially and economically stable, attracting investment and creating job opportunities. In the author's interpretation, the significance of harmony in multicultural societies is not only relevant in the context of conflict avoidance but also as a key to sustainable development. The author concludes that by prioritizing Quranic values in social interactions, communities can create a safe and inclusive environment where every individual feels valued and can contribute positively. This research provides important insights for efforts to build stronger and more united communities in the era of globalization. Abstract

This study discusses the methodological differences between classical interpretation and modern hermeneutic approaches in interpreting the Qur'an. Classical interpretation, represented by works such as Tafsir al-Tabari and Tafsir Ibn Kathir, tends to emphasize the authority of tradition and the literal understanding of the Qur'anic text. In contrast, modern hermeneutics, developed by scholars such as Fazlur Rahman and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, offers a more contextual and critical approach to texts, considering historical and social factors. This study aims to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches and assess the potential for combining the two elements. Using comparative methods and thematic analysis, this study finds that classical interpretation excels in maintaining the text's integrity but is less flexible in responding to contemporary challenges. On the other hand, modern hermeneutics is more relevant to today's socio-political context, although it faces criticism regarding the legitimacy and authority of the text. This study recommends further study of how ijtihad can bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, creating a more inclusive approach to interpreting the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study addresses the crucial issue of communication inefficiencies within religious organisations, which often lead to leadership fragmentation, operational confusion, and public misperception. Focusing on the Naqshabandiyyah Sufi Practice Centre (NSPC) in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, the research explores how strategic organisational communication enhances management decision-making in a spiritually structured institution. The objective is to analyse the roles of vertical and horizontal communication in ensuring administrative fluidity, leadership continuity, and public trust in the tarekat’s leadership. Employing a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory approach, the study utilizes document and content analysis to examine internal communications and management practices. The findings reveal that vertical communication supports the clear delegation of authority, vision alignment, and structured leadership formation, while horizontal communication facilitates collaboration, social outreach, and inter-agency coordination. The study also highlights how communication practices rooted in spiritual wisdom contribute to institutional legitimacy and organisational effectiveness. Ultimately, this article contributes to the field of Islamic management and communication by proposing a two-way, value-based communication model suited to the complexities of contemporary spiritual institutions operating within modern governance frameworks.

Abstract

The concept of salvation is a crucial theological issue debated within Islam, Christianity, and Judaism Abrahamic traditions. While these three religions share similarities in emphasizing faith and ethical behavior, they exhibit fundamental differences regarding the mechanisms of salvation. This study highlights that Islam emphasizes a balance between divine grace and individual responsibility, contrasting with Christianity's focus on grace and redemption through Jesus Christ and Judaism's emphasis on obedience to God's covenants and laws. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research employs textual analysis of the holy scriptures from each tradition alongside comparative theological studies. The findings reveal that the Qur'an integrates divine grace (rahmah) and human effort (amal salih), presenting a holistic view of salvation that differs from the grace-centered model of Christianity and the law-centered approach of Judaism. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of soteriology across these traditions and fosters constructive interreligious dialogue by illuminating both shared values and distinct theological perspectives.
