Abstract

This research discusses the shift in global political dynamics from the European Union (EU) to the Shanghai Coopertation Organization (SCO) as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Over the years, the EU has been a significant global power, however, the Ukraine conflict has weakened its influence. This event became an important driver of the shift in political power, with the SCO emerging as one of the main players in response. A mixed research method is used, involving a multidisciplinary approach and critical analysis covering geopolitics, security, and international politics. The Regional Security Complex and Structural Power theories provide the theoretical foundation for this analysis. The results show that the Ukraine conflict has weakened the EU's global influence by exposing internal divisions in response to the conflict. The EU imposed economic sanctions on Russia in response to its annexation of Crimea and support for the insurgency in eastern Ukraine. However, the EU has also been active in diplomacy and mediation to find a political solution. Meanwhile, the SCO is emerging as a new force in global politics with a regional cooperation platform that is increasingly visible at the international level. The shift to the SCO could have a major impact on global political and security dynamics. This potential is driven by the SCO's large member population and the EU's internal problems. If the focus shifts to the SCO, it could shift the center of policy and diplomacy from Europe to Asia, creating a new paradigm in international relations. The SCO's growing influence could give Asian countries, especially SCO members, more of a role in shaping global policy.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out the factors that caused the failure of the separatist movement to liberate the autonomous region of Catalonia from Spain, as well as to explain the defense-security strategy carried out by the Spanish government to maintain Catalonia as an inseparable part of this country. The researcher conducts an analysis based on two research questions: why the separatist movement failed to liberate Catalonia from Spain and what defense-security strategy the Spanish government did to defend Catalonia. The method used in this study is a qualitative method by processing primary data in the form of interviews with selected sources. In this study the Separatism Concept and Securitization Theory are used as the basis for researchers in conducting analysis. The findings of this study are as follows: first, the Catalan community is an important factor why the separatist movement failed to liberate Catalonia from Spain, even though it was through a referendum. The number of Catalonian people's participation in the referendum did not reach 50% of the total voter turnout. The next factor is the European Union which is firmly in the position of rejecting the existence of separatism in Catalonia which encourages the involvement of this autonomous region from Spain, which is a member state of the European Union. The second finding is the result of the analysis that the Spanish government has succeeded in carrying out a defense and security strategy through several decisive actions, namely the dissolution of the Catalan parliament, the takeover of the autonomous government of Catalonia, and holding elections for the election of the new Catalonia parliament which is considered to have been dominated by the separatist movement.

Abstract

The study aims to analyse the use of AI on social media by non-state far-right activists and   actors in Europe in the political year 2022-2023. The study also examines the problems posed by the use of AI in a political context and the legal measures implemented by European countries to mitigate these potential risks. Far-right ideology is not a new ideology in Europe. This ideology has existed since the 18th century. In the 2022-2023 political year, far-right parties gained seats in parliament and won elections in several European countries. This research is qualitative research using a critical paradigm. This research uses the Theory of Public Sphere. This theory was put forward by Jürgen Habermas whose essence is the formation of group opinion that can maintain structure, modify structure and ideological goals can be resistance to the practice of government and power. Public space theory also analyses the influence of AI in helping to promote the spread of extremist narratives, broaden the appeal of far-right movements to society, and create an atmosphere that encourages radicalization. The results of this study show how important it is to understand how AI technology interacts with the political dynamics of extremism in Europe.

Abstract

The Russia-Ukraine War of 2022 has prioritized energy security on the European policy agenda. This research aims to answer two critical questions in the aftermath of the 2022 Russian-Ukrainian War, such as what concrete steps were taken by the EU in response to the energy crisis triggered by the conflict, especially regarding reducing dependence on energy imports from Russia and how the EU's new energy policy after the 2022 Russian-Ukrainian War affected their efforts to reduce dependence on energy sources from Russia and stabilize energy supply in Europe. The analysis covers 2022 - 2024, using data from various sources such as official reports, literature reviews, and previous research. The research method includes a literature study using Barry Buzan's Regional Security Complexity Theory and Energy Security Concept, descriptive analysis to understand the EU's concrete steps in responding to the energy crisis, and comparative analysis to evaluate the impact of EU policies in reducing dependence on Russian energy. The analysis shows that the EU has taken strategic steps in dealing with the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on energy security. In the context of gas supplies from Russia, although gas supplies will likely remain via pipeline and LNG to some EU Member States that do not apply strict sanctions even after 2027, the volume of these supplies is expected to decrease significantly.

Abstract

The phenomenon of global warming has an impact on many things, including melting in the Arctic region which opens up opportunities for the opening of the Northern Sea Route in Arctic waters. China's presence in the Arctic region is increasingly massive in line with efforts to connect the Silk Road Belt Road Initiative in Europe with the Arctic region differently by Northern European countries. This study specifically discusses the dynamics of relations between Northern European countries—specifically referring to Nordic countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland—and China, especially regarding the Arctic Corridor project and geopolitics in the Arctic region. This study aims to characterize the presence or absence of securitization practices by Northern European countries against China related to the Arctic Corridor project. This will be discussed through the reactions, attitudes and policies shown by Northern European countries towards China in the framework related to the Arctic Corridor. The method used in this study is qualitative using a securitization approach, specifically the Regional Security Complex theory by Barry Buzan and Ole Waever to examine the problems discussed. Referring to this, the author asks the question, are there any securitization practices that occur in the dynamics related to the Arctic Corridor project between Northern European countries and China? Another question that is in line with this is how does the theory of securitization review the relationship between Northern European countries and China in the project? The hypothesis that emerges from the research question is that Northern European countries tend to have different attitudes in responding to China in the Arctic, specifically in the Arctic Corridor project. In this case Finland and Norway, which are the initiators of the project, tend to show their support for your presence in the Arctic, namely as financial supporters of the mega project. Meanwhile, Denmark, Sweden and Finland are just the opposite, which in this case considers China a threat in the context of regional security in both Northern Europe and the Arctic.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the importance of the EU’s Bill on Cyber Solidarity Act (bill) in order to strengthen the EU’s cyber resilience by enhancing preparedness and achieving equal capacities of EU member states in dealing with significant and large-scale cyber incidents. The cross-border nature of cybersecurity incidents can be too disruptive for a single or some affected member states to tackle on its own, necessitating collective action at the EU level. This study applied the qualitative method with library research using secondary data sourced from scientific journals and official documents. The authors used English school theory through the lens of the concept of solidarity. The result of this study reveals the important role of the bill in the EU in reinforcing cooperation among member states and EU institutions, thereby making the region fully prepared and more responsive to cybersecurity incidents. The main finding of this study is that the bill will become a legal umbrella for both member states and EU institutions to be able to implement the pre-incident, during-incident, and post-incident actions in a more coordinated manner thus, it will enhance the EU's overall capacities to deal with cybersecurity incidents.
