Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are faced health problems with various types of diseases such as skin diseases and TB. Skin infection can be caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites, which have the potential to be contagious if students does not practice Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS). Direct microscopic examination is the easiest, most affordable, and specific method for diagnosis. Therefore, the Community Service Team from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Jambi (FKIK UNJA), provided education on PHBS, conducted skin scraping examinations, and it’s treatments. The objective of this community service is to describe the skin infection with direct microscopic examination skin scraping using KOH among students at the Tanjung Pasir Al-Awwabien Islamic Boarding School, Jambi. The implementation of community service activities on Sunday, 11 August 2024 at the Tanjung Pasir Al-Awwabien Jambi Islamic Boarding School. The direct skin scraping examinations were carried out by scraping the affected skin area with a scalpel onto a glass slide, followed by the application of one drop of 10% KOH solution. The results were then analyzed using a microscope, and treatments were provided accordingly. The screening session was attended by 59 students with systemic symptoms, while 13 participants underwent direct skin scraping examinations. Among the students with skin disease, the majority were 14-yo. Most of the direct examinations did not detect spores, hyphae, or mites, and the most common diagnosis was tinea among the types of skin disease. The direct skin scraping examinations supports the diagnosis of skin infection, and it’s treatment, which is expected to help prevent the spread of skin diseases. Abstract

Background: Pneumonia remains a major cause of morbidity among toddlers in Indonesia, with household exposure to cigarette smoke acting as a significant and preventable risk factor. Posyandu cadres play a crucial role in community-based child health services; however, their capacity to screen environmental risks and perform early detection of respiratory compromise is often limited. Center, Simpang Kawat Community Health Center, and Paal X Community Health Center in 2024. This community service program aimed to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills of Posyandu cadres in pneumonia prevention through smoking exposure screening and pulse oximeter training Method: A community-based intervention with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted among 20 Posyandu cadres in the working area of the Olak Kemang Community Health Centre, Jambi City. The intervention consisted of interactive health education on secondhand and thirdhand smoke, a humanistic approach using case-based discussions, hands-on training in pulse oximeter use, and the introduction of a household smoking exposure screening tool. Changes in cadres’ knowledge were evaluated using structured questionnaires administered before and after the intervention. Results: The average knowledge score increased from 65% at baseline to 86% after the intervention, representing an absolute increase of 21 percentage points and a relative improvement of 32.31%, exceeding the predefined success criterion of a ≥20% increase. Conclusion: The program was effective in enhancing Posyandu cadres’ understanding of smoking-related health risks and their ability to perform early hypoxia detection using pulse oximetry. Strengthening cadre capacity through integrated and practical training may support community-based pneumonia prevention and promote healthier, smoke-free environments for toddlers

Abstract

Burns require effective therapy to accelerate healing and prevent complications. Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) extract contains secondary metabolite compounds that have wound healing activities, namely anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The purpose of this study was to analyze the potential of the purification process of 50% ethanol extract of areca nut (Areca catechu L.) on the potential for wound healing in test animals. The method used in this study was an experimental method. The mice used in each group consisted of 5 mice, namely a negative control (vaselin flavum), a positive control (Bioplacenton®), and three treatment groups of areca nut extract of 2%, 4%, and 6% mixed with vaselin flavum ad 100%. Second-degree burns were treated topically every day for 21 days, with wound diameter measurements every three days and histopathological analysis on the 22nd day. The 6% extract gave the best results, with wound healing of 51.58%. Histopathology showed better epidermal regeneration, collagen formation, vascularization, and decreased inflammation in the treatment group. The results of the study showed that a 50% purified ethanol extract of areca nut seeds has potential as a burn healing agent. Statistically, a 6% extract was the best for burn healing (P<0.05).

Abstract

Background: Tinea pedis is a fungal infection of the skin of feet characterized by peeling skin, itching and watery skin. Risk factors for this disease are working in wet places and wearing closed shoes for a long time such as motor vehicle wash service workers. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the use of boots and the incidence of tinea pedis in motor vehicle wash employees in Jambi City. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the use of boots with the incidence of tinea pedis in motorbike wash employees in Jambi City Methods: This quantitative analytical research type with a crosssectional method The research sample was motor vehicle wash employees in Jambi City. The sampling technique used the cluster sampling method, researchers selected groups in each sub-district in Jambi City according to the research criteria as many as 96 samples. Data were obtained using questionnaires, physical examinations and KOH examinations. The data that had been obtained were then processed by computerization using the SPSS application. Results: In this study, it was found that there was a significant relationship between length of work and the incidence of tinea pedis, length of use of boots with the incidence of tinea pedis and foot hygiene with the incidence of tinea pedis. Representatively p-value less than 0.005 (p=0.016) (p=0.000) (p=0.000). Conclusion: The longer working in a humid place, the longer using boots, and the worse foot hygiene a person has increases the risk of getting tinea pedis

Abstract

Background: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations depending on disease activity. Clinical manifestations, disease activity, and side effects of treatment can affect quality of life. The LupusQoL questionnaire assesses the disease's impact on eight quality of life domains. The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory biomarker that correlates with SLE disease activity. Objective: This research aims to determine the correlation between NLR and various domains of the LupusQoL questionnaire in SLE patients. Methods: This observational analytic study used purposive sampling, involving 32 SLE patients treated at Raden Mattaher Hospital, Jambi, in 2024. NLR was obtained from blood counts performed within the last 4 weeks, and HRQOL was measured using the LupusQoL questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation. Result: The mean NLR was 6.50 (1.3–29.43). LupusQoL showed the lowest score in fatigue (58.85). Pearson analysis revealed a moderate inverse correlation between NLR and the planning domain of LupusQoL (p= 0,022). NLR shows no statistically significant correlation with physical health, pain, intimacy, burden to others, emotional health, body image, or fatigue in SLE patients, as p-values >0.05. Conclusion: Higher NLR is correlated with lower planning domain HRQoL in SLE patients and vice versa.
