Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Prefixes of Verbs and Nouns in English and Saluan Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The aims of this study are to identify, classify, and analyze about the form, function, and meaning of prefix of verbs and nouns in English and Saluan Language, and to find out the similarities and differences of both language by using the theory of Brinton (2010), O’Grady & Dobrovolsky (1992), and Brown (1980). In this study, the English data were taken from the book of O’Grady (1992) and Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, fourth edition by Oxford University Press (2008) The data Saluan language were taken from informants. The result of this study shows that both languages have differences and similarities. Prefix of nouns in Saluan language consist topo-, nong-, pong-, and ka-. Based on function, Prefix of verbs and nouns in English can be attached to verbs, nouns, and adjective. Prefix of verbs and nouns in Saluan Language can be attached to verbs, nouns, adjective, and numerial. The simillarities English and Saluan Languages have the prefixes of verbs and nouns. The difference between the two languages is that the English prefix of nouns only attached to the basis of nouns, while prefix in Saluan language is attached to the verbs and nouns.Key words: Prefixes in English and Saluan Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

                                             ABSTRACT      This research entitled “Child Neglect as Reflected in the Novel A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett” is the requirement for the Sarjana Sastra degree in the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The writer use Robert’s theory to identify psychology of the main character. Boswell theory use to explore the child neglect that happened to Sara Crewe. This research use descriptive qualitative method. Two approaches are applied in analyzing the data: they are intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic is used to identify the characters. The extrinsic one aims at analyzing the child neglect, the causes and the impact. The purpose of this research is to identify, analyze, and describe child neglect and its causes in the novel A Little Princess. The result of this research is to improve the knowledge of readers about the causes and resolve of child neglect that lately happened in human life.Keywords: novel, child neglect, the causes, psychology analysis.

Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT     This research entitled "Ekspresi Sosial yang Digunakan oleh Mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris di Kelas Daring Analisis Wacana". This research focuses on identifying and classifying the social expressions and the functions of social expressions, as well as analyzing and describing the language styles of English Department students in the Discourse Analysis online class. These expressions were used by studentsto respond the lecturer and communicate with theirfriends during the Discourse Analysis online class. The data were taken from 2 classes of Discourse Analysis via Zoom and Whatsapp group. This research uses theories of Kirkpatrick (2008) which aims to identify, classify, and the functions of social expressions; and Joss (1978) which aims to analyze and describe the language styles. To ensure the data collection process, the writer uses descriptive method. The results of this research shows that there only 10 of 30 types of social expressions, namely special greetings, greeting people, asking permission, giving thanks, giving warning, offering help, expressing uncertainty, apologizing, saying goodbye, and telling time and dates. The functions of social expressions that are used by the students, namely: the function of special greetings is a hope that the person is fine, successful, lucky, and so on; the function of greeting people as an informal alternative to hello! when you meetsomeone; the function of asking permission is you ask permission to do something; the function of giving thanks is a form of response to someone thanking you for something; the functions of giving warning is put up by someone who does not want other people going on their land without permission; the function of offering help is someone offers to help you with something; the function of expressing uncertainty when you do not know whether something is true or you have doubts about something; the function of apologizing is you wish to apologize to someone for something bad, unpleasant, inconvenient, etc that you have done; the function of say goodbye is you leave someone or when they leave you; and the function of tell times dan dates was you want to know the time. In terms of language styles, there are 4 of 5 levels of style that are used, those are: formal style, consultative style, casual or formal style, and intimate style. Formal style usually follows a commonly accepted format, impersonal and formal, there are 34 language styles of social expression used by English Department students in Discourse Analysis online class. Consultative style is used for someone to consult with someone, two or many people who have problem to consultancy. In this part, there are 6 language styles of social expression used by the students. Casual or informal style is used to communicate each other whether in chat or talking directly, there are 3 language styles of social expression used by the students in Discourse Analysis online class. Intimate style is used for closed people to get several information or others that are 2 secret with an intimate people. In this part, there are 13 language styles of social expression used by English Department students in Discourse Analysis online class.Key words: Social Expressions, English Department Students, Discourse Analysis Online Class

Lasut, M.Hum2                                Donald Ringgo Lotulung, S.S, M.Hum3     This study entitled “Expressive Act in the Film The Kissing Booth by Vince Marcello: A Pragmatic Analysis”. It is written to identify, classify and analyze the kinds and functions of Expressive Act in the Film The Kissing Booth. The method that is used in this research is descriptive method and the data of expressive act were taken from the film The Kissing Booth. The data have been analyzed by using theory of Searle (1976). There are six kinds of expressive act in the film The Kissing Booth by Vince Marcello, those are apologizing, praising, thanking, congratulating, greeting and blaming. The functions that have been found are expressive act expressing apologizing, expressive act expressing praising, expressive act expressing thanking, expressive act expressing congratulating, expressive act expressing greeting, and expressive act expressing blaming, while function like pardoning and condoling were not found in the film The Kissing Booth. Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT     This research is entitled “Politeness Principles in English and Tondano language: A Contrastive Analysis.”. The aims of this research are identify, classify, and analyze the politeness principles in the forms of politeness maxims, which are used by Tondano society. The research questions to be answered namely what are the types of politeness principles in English and Tondano languages and to find out the similarities and differences in the both languages. In terms of the methodology, this research has been done through library and field studies by using the qualitative method and contrastive analysis. The data of both languages are analyzed based on the theory of Leech (1983) and Whitman (1970). It is found that the concepts of politeness in English and Tondano languages are vary. The result of this research shows that politeness principles in English and Tondano language have the similarities and differences. The similarities, for example, can be found in the forms of politeness maxims of each language. The differences, for example, can be found in the form of words usage of each language, and based on the form of the polite utterances in English and Tondano language have asking, order, and command meanings.Keywords: Politeness, English and Tondano Languages, Contrastive

Abstract

Lasut, M.Hum²                                        Dr. Garryn Ch. Ranuntu, M.Hum³     This research entitled “Politeness Principles in English and Gorontalo Language: A Contrastive Analysis” focuses on maxim related to politeness principles. The aims of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the polite utterances in English and Gorontalo Language according to politeness principles. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The English data were collected from pragmatic books, website, and some skripsi. In this research the writer uses Leech’s theory to analyze the data and Lado theory in contrasting both languages to find out the differences and similarities. The polite principle in both languages that can be seen, such as requesting, commanding, and ordering, it is also shown by the acting of convincing what the speaker says. The result shows that there are six maxim of politeness principles and their function. Those are tact maxim, the genorisity maxim, the approbation maxim, the modesty maxim, the aggrement maxim, and the sympathy maxim. It is expected that this research will help students and readers in learning pragmatic, especially on politeness principles.Keywords: Pragmatic, Politeness, English, Gorontalo Language

Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     The tittle of this skripsi is “Campur Kode yang Digunakan dalam Acara Talk Show Kick Andy di Metro TV”. It is analyzed from the sociolinguistic point of view. The aims of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze the code-mixing used by the host, Andy F. Noya, and his guest stars in the program “Kick Andy” (Talk show program on Metro TV). The research uses qualitative descriptive approach, by using the theory of Hoffman (1991:112) and Kim (2006: 43). The data were collected from utterances containing code-mixing in English by Andy F. Noya and the guest stars, in video / 14 episodes. The total number of code-mixing found are 120 by Andy F. Noya and guest stars in “Kick Andy” talk show program on Metro TV. The results of this research show that two types of code-mixing found are intra sentential code-mixing and intra lexical code-mixing. While the type of involving a change of pronunciation is not found in the data. The results of this research also show that there are 5 of 6 factors that cause people to do code-mixing in “Kick Andy” talk show program on Metro TV, namely bilingualism, speaker and partner speaking, social community, situation, and vocabulary. Abstract

                                                     ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Penggunaan Ujaran dan Ekspresi Emosional dalam Mengekspresikan Kemarahan dalam Film Joker Karya Todd Phillips (Analisis Psikolinguistik). This research focuses on identifying and classifying the utterances in expressing anger, and analyzing the emotional expressions. There are two types of communiactios, which are verbal communication and non verbal communication. Utterances are the verbal communication while the emotional expression is the nonverbal communication. The form of the utterance divided into several, such as emotive speech, phatic speech, conative speech, referential speech, metalingual speech, and phoetic speech. Emotional expressions that can be realized are facial expressions, voice, gesture, and posture. Face and voice can describe a person’s emotional state. It can be extinguished between people who are in a state of emotion and the other from a change of voice and facial expressions. The gesture and posture are physical actions appear to communicate a certain message. The researcher used descriptive method in order to find out the use of utterance and emotional expressions in film Joker as the data supported by Jakobson (1960) and Plutchik’s (2003) theory. The results of this research show that the utterances that express the anger can be seen in the act of speech by the characters, such as emotive speech, conative speech, and referential speech. While the emotional expression can be seen in several ways, such as face expressions, posture and gesture, tone of voice, physiological changes, and emotional actions, like the eyes staring intently at someone, frowning forehead, squinting or bulging eyes, hold the gun, lips tightly closed, jaws tighten, high and firm tone of voice, sweating, shouting, punching at each other in the face, index finger pointing, body leaning and stiff.-------------------------------------------------------Keywords : Utterances, Emotional Expression, Anger, Film Joker, Psycholinguistics

Lasut, M.Hum2                                      Dra. Rosalina R. Rambing, DEA3     This research is entitled "Rejection Aspect in the Novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens." This research focuses on identifying and classifying the types of rejection and analyzing and describing the aspect of rejection found in every utterance of each character in the novel Great Expectations. Rejection acts is a perlocutionary act. This study uses the theory of Leech (1983) and Crystal (1978), in e collecting the data, the writer focuses on the utterances conveyed by each character in the novel. each datum was analyzed descriptively and the results showed that there were several aspects of direct rejection as many 26 data, and indirect rejection 19 data, namely: to get hearer to think, to get hearer to do something, to bring hearer to know, irritate, frighten, encourage, and amuse.________________________________________Key Words : Rejection, Novel : Great Expectations . Abstract

                                                        ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Potensi Anak Berbakat dalam Novel Frindle Karya Andrew Clements” is intended to fulfill a requirement to accomplish the Sarjana degree at Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University, Manado. It aims at determining qualities of gifted child of Nick Allen as the main character in novel Frindle. Nick has many bright ideas; he is a good kid who solves problems around him. His traits that tend to be a gifted child can be found from him sitting in grade 2, this is supported by his environment from classmates to his teacher. This study uses the theory of Leta S. Hollingworth (1926), and uses a descriptive method in analyzing the data in the novel. The results show that the main character, Nick Allen, has tendencies as gifted children, such as leadership, sense of humor, courage initiative, obedience, studiousness, persistence, cheerfulness, intellectual modesty, and evenness of temper. That factors influence this are Nick's own environment, friends and family and even people use a word invention. It had such an unexpected impact that he became famous for his invention.Keywords: Gifted Child, novel Frindle
