Abstract

Abstract

The process of tooth extraction can cause injury and trigger healing stages involving soft tissue and alveolar bone. The stages of healing include hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. The use of NSAIDs for wound healing can cause side effects, so it is necessary to look for alternatives such as binahong leaf gel extract. To determine the effectiveness of 5% concentration of binahong leaf extract gel on the number of neutrophils in wound healing after tooth extraction in Wistar rats. This study is expected to be a foundation for the development of further research on alternative treatments using 5% binahong leaf gel extract in the process of healing wounds after tooth extraction. This type of research is a laboratory experiment with a post test only control group approach. The research subjects consisted of 27 jaw preparations of Wistar strain rats which were divided into three types of treatments, namely CMC-Na 1% as negative control, povidone iodine 1% as positive control, and 5% binahong leaf extract gel as treatment. Data analysis was performed using One Way ANOVA test and Post Hoc LSD test. There was a significant difference between the binahong and poviode iodine groups, as well as the binahong and CMC-Na groups with p-value <0.05. The mean difference values between the treatment group and the positive control were -18.267 (day 3), -7.200 (day 5), and -5.733 (day 7). While between the treatment group and the negative control were -11.933 (day 3), -17.533 (day 5), and -13.067 (day 7). 5% concentration of binahong (Anredera cordifolia) leaf extract gel is more effective than CMC-Na and povidone iodine to heal wounds after tooth extraction.

Abstract

Introduction: Chocolate is a popular sweet treat among children. The sugar used in chocolate can lead to the development of dental plaque and impact the process of teeth demineralization and remineralization. Until now, there has not been much research on how the acidity of dental plaque differs when children aged 10-12 consume chocolate sweetened with sucrose compared to chocolate sweetened with stevia. This study aims to explore and compare the effects of sucrose chocolate and stevia chocolate on the acidity of dental plaque in children aged 10-12 years. Methods: In this study, the researchers employed quasi-experimental research methods. The research received approval from the Ethical Committee of Health Research at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, indicated by Ethical Clearance Number 1.884/X/HREC/2023. Initially, on the first day, the researchers measured the plaque pH of twenty-one children aged 10-12 years from SD Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. This measurement was done before any intervention by using an excavator on all surfaces of their back teeth – the outer, inner, and in-between surfaces. The researchers combined the collected plaque with 2.5 ml of deionized water in a properly labelled sterile container. The plaque pH was measured using a pH metre (Hanna, Romania), calibrated beforehand with a pH 7 solution. The subjects then consumed 30% sucrose chocolate for 60 seconds. Twenty minutes after this intervention, the researchers measured the plaque pH using the same method. On the second day, the same subjects were instructed to consume 1% stevia chocolate, again using the same method. The results, specifically the average difference in plaque pH before and after the interventions on the two days, were analysed using an independent T-test. Results: The findings revealed that the average plaque pH before eating sucrose chocolate was 6.6222 ± 0.13137, and after consumption, it decreased to 6.2794 ± 0.11425. Before consuming stevia chocolate, the average plaque pH was 6.6746 ± 0.13536, and after consumption, it decreased to 6.4794 ± 0.13059. The average difference in plaque pH before and after consuming sucrose chocolate was 0.3429 ± 0.08508, whereas for stevia, it was 0.1952 ± 0.08517. According to the independent t-test, there was a notable difference in plaque pH between children aged 10-12 years who consumed sucrose chocolate and those who consumed stevia chocolate (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the findings from the study comparing the plaque pH in 10-12-year-old children after consuming sucrose chocolate and stevia chocolate, it can be concluded that there is indeed a disparity in plaque pH between the two types of chocolate. Specifically, the plaque pH in children who consumed sucrose chocolate was lower than that in those who consumed stevia chocolate.

Abstract

The mechanical approach is one of the methods for periodontal disease treatment. Besides, medicine also was administered locally to reduce the number of pathogens present in the pocket. Coenzyme Q10 gel has low toxicity, biodegradable, prolongs drug release, and can accelerate tissue healing. The curettage action aims to establish adhesion intensity and remove calculus, bacteria, and granulation tissue. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of coenzyme Q10 gel on chronic periodontitis with curettage in relation to the probing depth (PD), relative attachment level (RAL) and bleeding on probing (BOP). The study sample consisted of 10 patients with curettage treatment and coenzyme Q10 gel application. The gel was applied to the pocket of chronic periodontitis patients after curettage. PD, RAL, and BOP of patients measured before and on days 21 and 30 after gel application. The results showed that there was a significant difference in BOP between observation times. There are differences in the reduction of PD and RAL. Coenzyme Q10 gel's application affected decreasing probing depth, relative attachment loss, and bleeding on probing after curettage

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis treatment depends on the severity of the disease, pocket depth, and bone damage. It consists of (1) emergency phase, (2) non-surgical phase, (3) surgical phase, and (4) maintenance or restorative phase. Each phase plays a crucial role in ensuring healing and controlling periodontitis. The non-surgical phase involves scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar, while the surgical phase addresses bone damage and pocket reduction. The maintenance phase is critical to preventing disease recurrence. Objective: The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate the success of curettage in a patient with chronic localized periodontitis stage II grade A and stage I hypertension, within a two-week post-treatment period. Case: A 52-year-old female patient presented at RSGM Soelastri with complaints of bleeding gums during tooth brushing. The patient reported gum bleeding around the lower front teeth for the past six months, without any pain. She was regularly taking antihypertensive medication (amlodipine). Examination revealed deep periodontal pockets in teeth 41 and 42, accompanied by gum swelling, indicating chronic localized periodontitis stage II grade A. The patient also had a history of stage I hypertension, which required careful management during treatment. Conclusion: The treatment for chronic localized periodontitis stage II grade A on teeth 41 and 42 with stage I hypertension was curettage. After two weeks of treatment, the patient showed significant improvement, including reduced bleeding and a decrease in pocket depth, with stable hypertension control. Curettage proved effective in managing the condition, with careful consideration of the patient's hypertension risk factors.

Abstract

This dental and oral screening activity is part of our efforts to increase students' awareness and knowledge about the importance of maintaining dental and oral health from an early age. In addition, this activity aims to identify dental and oral health problems that students may face, as well as provide appropriate education so that they can maintain better dental and oral hygiene. This report contains a series of activities, screening results, and recommendations for follow-up actions that can be taken to improve dental and oral health among students of Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Surakarta Elementary School. Based on the def-t index category, it shows that the prevalence of caries is quite high. There are several factors that influence the screening results, including: 1. Oral care habits in children.. 2. The level of understanding of parents and children about the importance of dental and oral health has a direct impact on children's oral hygiene habits. 3. Children's fear or anxiety about dental examinations can affect cooperation during screening. 4. The accuracy of the tools and the expertise of medical personnel in conducting screening affect the accuracy of the results. We hope that with this activity, students can be more concerned and responsible for their dental and oral health. We also express our gratitude to all parties who have supported the implementation of this activity, both from the school, health workers, and all participants who have actively participated in this activity.
