Abstract

This article discusses the development of the workspace design of a creative hub based on the characters of the future generation. Workspace changes are influenced by demographic trends and technology that alter society as a whole. In 2020–2030, it is expected that the productive working generation will be dominated by the millennial. However, the current conventional workspace is not suited to the character of such a generation. Through typological exploration of various creative workspaces in Jakarta, Bogor, and Bandung, this article aims to demonstrate how future workspaces accommodate various aspects of working, from collective, community, connected, customization, and confidence. Investigations towards such aspects shape the working principles, working lifestyle, and space organisation preferences that influence the development criteria of a creative hub as a centre of creative working activities. This article discusses a playful creative hub design as an ideal working space for future generations, as a contribution towards future workspace design.

Abstract

This paper examines the utilisation of the Su’i Uwi poetry as the basis of a narrative architectural exploration in Bajawa, Flores. The Su’i Uwi poetry is a narrative originated from the Bajawa ethnic group, which is sung during the Reba ceremonies, a form of annual festival of the area. This study develops the resort design project in support of the tourism destination program in the prioritised Ngada Regency, particularly in the traditional kampungs areas that have not been properly explored. This study is especially timely as travellers en route from Labuan Bajo to Ende, or vice versa, will pass through the town of Bajawa and require support from such resort facility. The utilisation of Su’i Uwi poetry is part of the development efforts that does not only pursue regional economic enhancement but also consider local aspects of culture. This study builds an understanding of the Su’i Uwi narrative through literature reviews, interviews with Mosalaki [the elders] of the land-owning tribe in Late, and field observations as the foundation to explore a narrative approach in architectural design. Identifying the mechanism of narrative architecture related to structure, framing, and sequence derived from the Su’i Uwi poetry expands the discussion of design based on the local culture of the community.

Abstract

This design study focuses on the redevelopment of the Kebayoran Lama traditional market using a behavioural approach. Traditional markets hold an important role in the social, economic, and cultural life of urban communities, functioning not only as centres of trade but also as spaces for interaction that shape the city's character. However, rapid urban development often creates challenges for traditional markets, reducing their competitiveness against modern shopping centres. The study began with direct observation and behavioural mapping activities at the Kebayoran Lama traditional market to understand how traders and visitors interact with the space. Findings show the current layout does not support user needs due to irregular commodity placement, limited circulation, inactive stalls, and trading activities spilling outside the building. This research proposes strategies to restructure the market into a more adaptive, inclusive, and sustainable space. The design sought to reprogram the spatial boundaries to identify a setting for particular behaviour, improve wayfinding to create clearer spatial cognition, and develop sensorial experience to enhance environmental perception. These redevelopment strategies demonstrate an integrated framework of behaviour approach to functionally efficient, cognitively legible, and socially engaging spaces, strengthening the market's role as a vital centre of economic and social activities for the community.
