Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the language politeness in the novel "Beauty and The Best" by Luna Torashyngu". The research method uses descriptive qualitative with content analysis. The data source of this research is taken from "Beauty and The Best" novel by Luna Torashyngu. The results show six variations of language politeness in this novel. There are six maxims in this novel: the maxim of humility, the maxim of sympathy, the maxim of agreement, the maxim of praise, the maxim of generosity, and the maxim of wisdom. The conversation in the maxim of wisdom shows the attitude of wise figures in making speeches with their interlocutors from the maxims of politeness in language. Meanwhile, the speech shows politeness in the language in the maxim of generosity. Speakers in carrying out conversations can still uphold their generosity attitudes so that a conducive speech situation can still be created. In the maxim of praise, the conversations that are carried out also show perspectives of praising through their speech and in the maxim of agreement. On the contrary, speakers commit many violations, especially characters who act as antagonists. Likewise, there are also many deviations from the maxim of agreement, even though some show an utterance that creates an agreement between the speaker and the interlocutor.

Abstract

The study's goal was to use the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique to improve students' reading comprehension. This study aims to see if Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) enhances students' reading comprehension and if the average score of students' reading comprehension taught through DRTA is higher than that taught through solo reading. This study was carried out utilizing Classroom Action Research as a method. Kemmis and Taggart proposed a research paradigm that comprised two cycles: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Before beginning the cycle, the writer conducted a pre-cycle to assess students' reading comprehension. The writer and the English teacher collected student data for the study. The data was collected through field notes, observation sheets, and tests. The research was focused on increasing students learning activities and students reading comprehension. The average score in the pre-cycle result showed that pupils' reading comprehension had improved, with a score of 59,35. Only thirteen students, or 48.14% of the class, received a score higher than the Minimum Mastery Criterion. The outcome of Cycle 1 was 59,16, with eleven students or 59.25% scoring over the Minimum Mastery Threshold and ten students or 40.74% scoring below the criterion. The mean score for cycle 2 was 72.87, with twenty-three students or 85.18% participating. Four students, 14.81%, received a score above the Minimum Mastery Threshold, while the remaining four, 14.81%, received a score below the criterion. Classroom Action Research could be concluded after evaluating data and completing semantic mapping. Students learning activities and reading comprehension improved due to the reading method.

Abstract

This research explores the impact of integrating digital media with local cultural elements to improve listening skills among students. The study distinguishes listening as an active process that requires engagement and comprehension, contrasting it with mere hearing. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology, the study involved planning, implementation, and reflection phases with 35 second-semester students at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. Data collection methods included tests, interviews, and observations, with triangulation ensuring the validity of the findings. The results indicate a significant improvement in students' listening skills, evidenced by an increase in average listening comprehension scores from 71.75 to 80.65 over two research cycles. This improvement is attributed to the effective integration of visual digital media with cultural content from Lampung Barat. Despite initial challenges related to student focus and engagement, the study demonstrates that cultural understanding is crucial for effective listening and that modern technology can enhance this process. Success was evaluated based on student participation, comprehension, and achievement of Minimum Completion Criteria (MCC), with a notable number of students meeting these metrics in Cycle II. The research concludes that combining local cultural elements with digital technology enriches the learning experience, leading to substantial improvements in listening proficiency and overall student outcomes. This approach offers promising opportunities for curriculum development and pedagogical innovation, suggesting that such integration could be beneficial across various academic disciplines to create more engaging and relevant educational environments

Data collection was done through a survey questionnaire consisting of both open-ended and close-ended questions, and continued by interview activities. The participants in this study amounted to 28 students of 3rd semester of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. Data collection techniques in this study used questionnaires with Likert scale and interview. Results from this research showed that students have a positive attitude toward the online learning experience in general. The implementation of online learning during a pandemic is considered an effective and cheap way of accessing knowledge. Abstract

This study discusses the analysis of the flouting maxim using a YouTube video on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube channel "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds". The purpose of this study is to describe the flouting maxim and describe the function of the flouting maxim in a conversation in the video. Maxim is a part of pragmatics. The researchers get the data by analyzing the conversation or an interview in a YouTube video on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube channel "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds". The researchers used Grice's theory called the cooperative principle with four types of maxims: maxims of quantity, maxims of quality, maxims of relevance, and maxims of means. In this analysis using a conversation on the BBC Radio 1 YouTube video "Kids ask Ryan Reynolds", there are 8 data, 8 of which follow the maxim of relevance, and 1 data follow the maxim of quality. From each data, researchers could discover multiple flouted maxims in the conversation, up to 3 flouted maxims in each one. The consistently followed maxim in the video is the maxim of relevance because, throughout the video, Ryan always responds with a relevant topic. On the other hand, the most common and most consistently flouted maxim by Ryan Reynolds in the video is the maxim of manner.
