Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Climate change is a global challenge that has created vulnerabilities for coastal communities, not least for eco-farming pond farmers in Pinrang Regency who are highly dependent on environmental conditions. This research aims to explain the forms of vulnerability experienced by the community of pond farmers in Lanrisang District. Through participant observation research in three villages in Lanrisang, we conducted in-depth interviews with a number of pond farming households which we present ethnographically by looking at three components of vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity and resilience. We found that climate change has led to a 0.5C-1C increase in average annual temperature as well as irregular rainfall patterns. These conditions have resulted in declining pond water quality, which is characterized by changes in salinity, pH, and DO that are not ideal for shrimp and milkfish growth so that posing a risk of failed harvest. In addition, we also found that there are emerging social issues such as competition and theft practices that could pose a security risk. This can reduce income and threaten the productivity of aquaculture. Pond farmers respond to these challenges by finding side jobs or opening businesses, leasing ponds, and converting ponds into agricultural land. We recommend community empowerment policies that focus more on climate resilience and pond farmers' welfare. Keywords: vulnerability;pond;climate change;social problems.

Abstract

This study describes the access mechanism of fishermen involved in illegal fishing activities in Lake Tempe. The purpose of this research is to explain the forms of fisherman's access and the biophysical factors that support fishermen's access in the practice of illegal fishing. This research used a qualitative approach. Informants were determined using the Snowball method. Data were collected by using technique of indept intervew, participant observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that: 1) rights-based access mechanisms are obtained through cooperation with fishing area owners; 2) structural and relational-based access mechanisms are obtained through relations with capital owners, law and government officials, and social identities; and 3) water level conditions of the lake make it easier for fishermen to access illegal fishing practices and make it difficult to supervise. For this reason, fishery resource management planning in Lake Tempe is needed by considering social and environmental conditions through collaboration between fishermen and the government.

Abstract

This paper explores the sustainable agricultural practices of sugar palm farmers in the highlands of Enrekang, South Sulawesi, which have been given less attention by modern agricultural policies. Sustainable agriculture is a solution to the negative impacts caused by conventional agricultural systems. Using holistic approach, this paper aims to reveal how traditional sugar palm cultivation can contribute to sustainable agriculture from economic, social, and environmental aspects. The research method is qualitative research using indepth interviews and observations of farmer households and comparing the findings with other supporting secondary documents. The research findings show that the economic aspects of sustainable agriculture are seen through the processing and production efficiency of palm sugar which is widely practiced to be able to provide decent economic benefits for farmers. From the social aspect, the utilization of sugar palm crops also shows the existence of gender roles and access opportunities to resources for local communities. From an environmental aspect, sustainable practices are reflected through the use of eco-friendly packaging by Enrekang palm sugar products and the presence of sugar palm contributes to the conservation of land, water and biodiversity in the highland area. The government needs to focus on sustainable agricultural policies such as the utilization and developed of sugar palm crops in the highlands involving local farmers.

Abstract

Vertical agriculture has emerged as an innovative solution to the challenge of food security in densely populated urban areas such as those in the Netherlands. The background of this research is driven by the need to find more efficient and sustainable agricultural methods amid the limitations of conventional agricultural land. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential application of modern hydroponic technology in vertical farming systems in urban Netherlands, as well as to analyze its impact on environmental and economic sustainability. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, where data is collected through interviews with agricultural experts, literature analysis, and direct observation on vertical farming facilities using hydroponic technology. The results show that vertical farming systems with hydroponic technology are able to reduce water use by up to 90% compared to traditional agriculture, as well as increase crop production up to 3 times on the same land area. In conclusion, hydroponic vertical agriculture innovations not only provide solutions to urban land limitations, but also support more environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices. However, challenges in terms of initial costs and technology are still the main obstacles that need to be overcome for wider implementation.
