Abstract

This study explores the preservation strategies employed for the rare book collection at the North Sumatra State Museum, which constitutes a vital part of the nation's cultural heritage. These rare books possess significant historical and intellectual value, reflecting the trajectory of civilization and the formation of national identity. As a cultural institution, the museum bears a major responsibility to safeguard these collections from deterioration and loss. The primary aim of this research is to identify the preservation strategies implemented by the museum and to examine the challenges encountered during the process. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was used. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with museum staff, and documentation analysis of preservation activities. The interview involved a single informant, Herina Eliasta Ginting, who serves as the Rare Book Collection Officer. She was selected due to her direct involvement and extensive knowledge of the conservation processes conducted at the museum. Data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that the museum has implemented several preservation measures, including regulation of temperature and humidity in storage areas, physical security measures, and preventive maintenance to avoid potential damage. However, the implementation of these strategies continues to face significant challenges, particularly the limited availability of conservation experts and operational funding. Consequently, enhancing human resource capacity and adopting digital preservation technologies are essential to ensure more effective and sustainable conservation of the collection.

Abstract

Background: The rate of student visits to the STIKes Binalita Sudama Medan library has experienced a significant and drastic decline in recent years. This phenomenon presents a crucial issue as it directly impacts the low utilization of verified academic information sources by students. Furthermore, this situation threatens the fundamental role of the library as a center for learning and intellectual development within the higher education ecosystem, thus requiring an in-depth exploration to understand its root causes.Purpose: This study aims to comprehensively explore the underlying factors contributing to the decline in student visits to the library. Additionally, it seeks to identify and analyze the effectiveness of relevant and contextually appropriate strategies that can be implemented to revitalize the library's role. Methods: This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing a case study method to gain a holistic understanding. Data were collected through technique triangulation, which included in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a documentation study. Research informants, consisting of librarians and students, were selected using a snowball sampling technique until data saturation was achieved. Results: The findings indicate that the causes for the decline in visits are multifaceted, stemming from both internal factors (student attitudes and digital preferences) and external factors (inadequate facilities, collections, and promotion). Existing strategies, such as lecturer collaboration and friendly service, have not been optimally effective. Conclusions: The decline in visits is influenced by internal factors and significantly exacerbated by external factors, namely the library's failure to meet basic user expectations. This study provides a critical diagnostic contribution for library management to reformulate more effective, user-centered strategies aimed at enhancing the library's appeal and relevance.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the collection management at the Library of Pesantren Modern Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Medan in supporting the scientific development of students. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the collection acquisition process is strategically carried out through purchases (80%) and endowments (20%), with a focus on Islamic and general collections relevant to the curriculum. The collections are organized based on a specific classification system and maintained through rebinding efforts. The library also implements various literacy programs such as mobile libraries, reading carts, literacy competitions, and student study groups to enhance students’ literacy and critical thinking skills. However, challenges remain, including limited library staff and the students’ tight schedules, which hinder the optimal implementation of literacy activities. The library plays a vital role in supporting the learning process but requires additional resources and extended operating hours to function more effectively as a center for literacy and intellectual development in the pesantren environment.
