Abstract

The practice of religious traditions and rituals in graveyards often causes controversy because some people consider them to be elements of shirk. However, these traditions remain alive, as seen in the batumbang ritual in Satiruk Village. This study aims to analyze how the Qur'an is brought to life and applied in local culture through the batumbang tradition`, as well as to understand the integration of Islamic teachings in local cultural practices. This study uses the living Qur'an theory and Emile Durkheim's Cultural Paradigm theory as its analytical framework. The method used is qualitative with a field research approach that includes observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The results show that the batumbang tradition serves as an expression of the community's gratitude for the fulfillment of their vows by combining Islamic teachings, such as the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Surah Yasin, with local cultural practices. In the context of Durkheim's Cultural Paradigm theory, this ritual reflects four main pillars, namely sacredness as seen in the ritual at the grave of a religious figure, role classification in the ritual, rites reflected in the recitation of Surah Yasin, and solidarity formed through togetherness in prayer and food sharing. The batumbang tradition also reflects the application of the living Qur'an, in which the teachings of the Qur'an are translated into social practices that strengthen social bonds and religious understanding among the local community. This study concludes that the batumbang tradition illustrates the synergy between Islamic teachings and local culture, which reinforce each other.

Abstract

Abstract

Religious freedom in Indonesia plays a vital role in preserving social harmony and peace among people of diverse faiths. Although the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to choose and practice their religion, challenges often emerge in reality, including social tensions arising from religious differences. This study examines Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy’s interpretation of QS. Al-Baqarah verse 256 in Tafsir Al-Majid an-Nur as a basis for understanding the Islamic concept of religious freedom. It also explores how his perspective aligns with the human rights principles recognized in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive method through a library research approach, this study analyzes both the tafsir text and relevant scholarly works. The findings reveal that Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy underscores the Qur’anic notion that religion must not be imposed, as genuine faith originates from personal conviction and inner awareness rather than external coercion. His interpretation links religious freedom with the value of moderation, which advocates tolerance, respect for diversity, and the pursuit of social harmony in a plural society. Ultimately, Hasbi’s thought reinforces Islam’s image as an inclusive religion that upholds individual freedom in faith, serving as a crucial pillar in fostering a just, peaceful, and respectful community.

Abstract

The development of digital communication technology has transformed interactions between children and parents, raising the question of how Islamic ethical principles, particularly the concept of qaulan karĭman can be reinterpreted and applied in the context of digital communication. This study examines the meaning of qaulan karĭman in QS. Al-Isra' verse 23 using the maʿna cum maghzā approach, emphasizing understanding of the verse based on its historical meaning (maʿna) and its moral and social significance (maghzā). A qualitative hermeneutic method was employed, with primary data from the Qur'an and classical and contemporary tafsir, and secondary data from literature on digital communication and family ethics. The analysis reveals that qaulan karĭman refers not only to gentle, polite, and respectful speech but also to moral and social objectives, including maintaining parents' dignity, honor, and emotional well-being. The findings indicate that these principles can be applied in digital communication through text messages, chats, or social media, with attention to word choice, timing, emotional expression, and supportive messages. Challenges in digital communication, such as tonal misinterpretation without verbal cues, risks of conflict from delayed messages, and cultural gaps between generations are also discussed. In conclusion, the reinterpretation of qaulan karĭman provides a framework for ethical, harmonious, and empathetic digital communication, affirming that qur’anic values remain relevant and applicable in modern contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the paradigmatic transformation of Qur'anic interpretation from classical textualist approaches toward contemporary contextualist ones as an epistemological phenomenon in modern Islamic studies. The dominance of classical tafsīr methodology, rooted in transmitted authority (naqlī) and linguistic analysis (lughawī), is assessed to have undergone a crisis of relevance when confronted with social, political, and cultural issues of the 20th and 21st centuries. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach through critical analysis of primary and secondary sources in the Islamic tafsīr tradition. The findings indicate that this paradigmatic shift is not linear-evolutionary but dialectical, marked by tensions between textual authority and contextual demands, generating new tafsīr methodologies that draw upon hermeneutics, social sciences, and historical-critical approaches. The contributions of Fazlur Rahman, Muhammad Arkoun, and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd serve as concrete representations of this methodological transformation. The article concludes that contextualism is not a rejection of the text, but an expansion of tafsīr epistemology that acknowledges the dynamic relationship between text, historical context, and the interpreter's subjectivity in contemporary Islamic studies.
