Abstract

This study uses VOSviewer bibliometric analysis to chart the upward trajectory of civic cultural literacy research, particularly in primary schools. The goal of this study was to examine civic cultural literacy research trends using bibliometric analysis. Article data were collected using publication reference management systems and the Publish or Perish (PoP 8) database. Direct the search process by including the keywords "Cultural Literacy, Civic Literacy, Civic Cultural Literacy, and Elementary School" in the article's title and abstract. 1000. articles are utilized as samples and deemed appropriate. The literature included in the Google Scholar index between 2014 and 2024 provides research material. The statistics reveal that over time, the citations related to this paper are very few and even declined considerably. The statistics reveal that the number of citations linked with this work has decreased dramatically over time, as seen by the fact that there were 9004 citations in 2014. However, there will be just 410 citations at the end of 2023, and 28 citations by 2024. Based on density visualization data, the yellow color in the visualization suggests a dark direction, implying that this research is still extremely poorly done and provides a huge chance for future research on the phrase above

Abstract

Civic literacy is a critical competency for primary education, fostering students’ understanding of societal roles, rights, and responsibilities. However, traditional teaching methods often struggle to engage young learners effectively in this domain. This study aims to explore the enhancement of civic literacy through innovative pedagogical strategies, specifically Game-Based Learning (GBL) and Team Games Tournament (TGT), by conducting a bibliometric review of relevant literature from 2015 to 2025. The method involved systematic data collection from academic databases, followed by quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analyses to identify research trends, influential works, and thematic developments related to GBL and TGT in civic education. Results reveal an increasing scholarly interest in applying GBL and TGT as engaging, interactive, and collaborative approaches that promote critical civic competencies among primary school students. Key findings highlight the positive impact of these methods on student motivation, teamwork skills, and civic knowledge acquisition. Despite promising outcomes, gaps remain in long-term impact studies and cross-cultural applicability. In conclusion, this review underscores the potential of integrating GBL and TGT in primary education to effectively foster civic literacy, encouraging further empirical research and practical implementation tailored to diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

The research trend regarding educational game-based learning media introducing cultural diversity in elementary schools has increased recently. The integration of culture-based games is an innovative approach in the field of teaching especially in addressing cultural diversity in educational settings. This trend stems from recognizing the importance of promoting cultural awareness, understanding, and acceptance among students from an early age. This research is bibliometric. We collected several articles about ethnoscience and educational games from the Semantic Scholar database published from 2012 to 2023. Overall, harnessing the power of educational games in elementary schools can effectively engage students in meaningful cultural learning experiences that promote empathy, respect, and global citizenship from an early age.

Abstract

The evolving paradigm of 21st-century education necessitates the adoption of innovative instructional strategies that prioritize not only academic performance but also foster learner motivation and engagement. One increasingly popular approach is gamification, which involves incorporating game-based elements into non-game educational contexts. This study aims to assess the implementation of gamification in primary education through a systematic review of empirical studies, focusing on its effectiveness in bridging classical motivation theories with contemporary teaching practices. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, 25 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2024 were analyzed to identify commonly utilized gamification elements, theoretical frameworks, and pedagogical outcomes. The findings indicate that gamification significantly enhances students' intrinsic motivation and active engagement, particularly when aligned with psychological theories such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Deci and Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory, and Vroom’s Expectancy Theory. Game elements like points, badges, leaderboards, and challenges contribute to creating an engaging learning environment and improving educational outcomes. However, the effectiveness of gamification is closely tied to the quality of its instructional design, which must be grounded in sound motivational principles. The study concludes that gamification serves as a strategic pedagogical tool that not only enriches student engagement but also operationalizes motivation theories into meaningful and impactful teaching practices.

Abstract

Higher education institutions in culturally diverse societies have a vital role in fostering citizenship that is inclusive, democratic, and responsive to cultural differences. In Southeast Asia, especially in postcolonial settings such as Indonesia and Malaysia, civic education is commonly framed as a means of reinforcing national identity. However, this approach often fails to adequately recognize the varied cultural backgrounds and lived experiences of students. This study explores the ways cultural literacy is incorporated into civic education within higher education and examines its influence on the formation of students civic identities in multicultural learning settings. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, the research was carried out at two public universities, one located in Indonesia and the other in Malaysia, chosen for their culturally diverse student populations and involvement in civic oriented programs. Data collection involved document analysis, semi structured interviews with 24 lecturers, curriculum developers, and students, along with classroom observations conducted over a three month period. Thematic analysis identified an ongoing gap between civic education objectives at the policy level and everyday classroom practices, particularly in negotiating national narratives alongside cultural diversity. The findings reveal tensions between state centered civic models and culturally responsive teaching approaches, while also highlighting effective practices such as community based learning, student led discussions, and the inclusion of local wisdom. This study contends that cultural literacy, supported by strategic empathy and critical reflection, is central to promoting meaningful civic participation and inclusive forms of citizenship. By emphasizing students lived cultural experiences, this research contributes to broader discussions on transformative civic education and provides practical insights for advancing culturally grounded and socially just civic learning in higher education contexts across the Global South.
