Abstract

The objective of this present study was to analyze the type of cohesive devices used in the theses of graduate students of English as a foreignlanguage. The data obtained for this discourse analysis study was gathered from the theses of 21 graduate students’ background of the study section at English Study Program Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya upon considering some set criteria. The results of this study indicated that the graduate students employed grammatical cohesive devices where reference was the most frequently used (80.14%), followed by conjunction (19.22%), ellipsis(0.47%) and substitution (0.15%). As far as the finding of this present study is concerned, the background of the study section of the graduate students’ theses seemed to be very cohesive through the use of reference and conjunction. The use of these two cohesive devices would serve not only to link the sentences together but also enable the readers to understand the text. Therefore, in the light of this finding, some pedagogical implications should be taken intoconsideration especially to teach explicitly about cohesive devices to students so that they would be able to compose a cohesive writing.

Abstract

The present study aimed at exploring the abstracts of research articles written by non-native English researchers to uncover the specific characteristics of academic vocabulary employed in the English research articles abstracts. It focuses on frequency and coverage distribution of the words from the Academic Word List (Coxhead, 2000) in the abstracts of research articles. The source of data for this corpus study was gathered from 97 abstracts written by the EFL researchers and published by the Journal Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Missio at STKIP St. Paulus Ruteng from 2015 until 2018. The results of this study revealed that the coverage of K1, the first most frequent 1000 English words, is the most dominant lexical items applied by the researchers. It covered 71.33% of the texts. The representation of lexical items that belong to K2, the second most frequent 1000 English words, covered 5.44% of all the words used by the writers in their abstracts. Moreover, the presence of Academic Word List, which refers to a list of 570 word families that are commonly found in academic texts and Off-list, which refers to the words that do not belong to K1 or K2 because it is related to certain field, has slight difference over all of the texts where the former covers 11.95% and the later covers 11.26%. As far as the findings of the present study are concerned, the room for some improvements on academic words applied in the abstracts need to pay attention.

Abstract

Responding to the growing need to foster communicative abilities in English, schools in Indonesia are driven to make their students proficient in English. However, the majority of English teachers themselves are still not prepared to use English as a means of communication; improving their English proficiency has thus become a matter of concern. As the first phase of a larger-scale study, this present study focuses on teachers’ English proficiency. Data for this study were collected from 149 secondary school teachers of English from five regions (Palembang, Yogyakarta-Sleman, Surabaya, Ruteng, and Maluku). They were asked to self-assess their English proficiencies based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) guidelines as well as to do an English Proficiency assessment. Fifty-two of these participants were teachers who were completing an in-service professional education program in Surabaya. The teachers assessed their proficiencies in interpersonal communication, presentational speaking, presentational writing, interpretive listening, and interpretive reading. The English Proficiency assessment includes syllabus-oriented items, General English items, and an essay. The study also conducted in-depth interviews of selected teachers. This study found that there is a gap between the teachers’ perception of their communicative abilities in English and their actual English proficiency.

Abstract

This study is part of a larger-scale research aimed at mapping the pedagogical competence of teachers of English and Indonesian Language across three cities of differing demographic features in Indonesia. As a subset of the study, this paper focused on investigating the ability to formulate higher-order thinking (HOT) questions in the classroom among the teachers, as well as getting their perception about applying HOTS in their classes. The mapping was done by comparing the abilities across teachers’ regions, years of service, and subjects taught (English and Indonesian Language). This research was designed as a case study involving quantitative and qualitative data analyses, with 15 (fifteen) secondary school teachers as the participants.  Data were collected through classroom observations, document (lesson plan) analyses, as well as teachers’ interviews. Quantitative analysis was performed on the teachers’ scores in formulating HOTS questions, while teaching documents and transcripts were coded for qualitative analysis. Although the statistical results revealed no significant difference between the HOTS questioning scores of the teachers in the different regions and years of service, qualitative data suggested that language medium, as shown by the difference between English and Indonesian Language teachers, might be an important factor affecting the abilities of teachers to ask HOT questions, as well as their perception of the applicability of HOTS in their classes. The inquiry into the teachers’ perceptions of HOTS also displayed a gap between teachers in the bigger city and those in more remote regions, as well as between the novices and the practitioners.

Abstract

The Five Super-priority Tourist Destinations have been set by the Government of Indonesia in 2019. One of the selected tourist destinations is Komodo-Labuan Bajo. This determination of course affects many sectors and dimensions of people's lives; one of which is the readiness of tourist villages in the super destination area. The target of community service activities is the local population by involving their participation in the field of community improvement and empowerment. This participation is the first step for them to make changes in the tourism sector. Activities that have been carried out in this community service program include assistance in homestay business management, simple English language training, and ordering local tourism guides as an effort to sustain self-management participation based on existing local wisdom. As a first step, of course the sustainability of institutional networking activities is highly expected.

Abstract

Learning English as a foreign language is very challenging for both teachers and students in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara of Indonesia. The challenges are primarily caused by their lack of exposure to the authentic environment of English. In dealing with this phenomenon, the appropriate listening practices expect to help the learners to obtain and construct their knowledge of English as well as to acquire more comprehensible input. This article reports an investigation on the EFL learners’ attitudes toward the extensive listening practices. It applied mixed-method research procedures involving 55 students of the English language and education program of Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. The data were collected through a survey coupled with Focus Group Discussions with 15 participants. This research revealed that the learners' attitudes are identified into two main categories called positive and negative attitudes. In this case, 38 % of the participants have positive attitudes toward extensive listening practices and 62% of the participant reflected the negative attitude toward the extensive listening practices. Learners with a positive attitude had a very strong awareness of the significance of listening skills in L2 learning. To improve their listening skills, they develop their listening practices outside the classroom consistently. Meanwhile, learners with negative attitudes were categorized as dependent learners who practiced their listening skills during the listening course only. This group of learners was less aware of the significance of listening skills in L2 learning and their listening practices were highly dependent on the teachers' instruction. It showcased that both of the learners’ internal and external factors were strongly contributed to this poor extensive listening practices.  The EFL teachers are then strongly suggested to strengthen the learners’ awareness on the significance of Listening Skills in L2 learning as well as design more instructed extensive listening practices outside the classroom.

Abstract

There is no greater power to encourage teachers to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the learning process until the Covid-19 pandemic occurs. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the learning process in schools in the outermost, remote, and disadvantaged (3T) areas such as East Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The implementation of Distance Learning (PJJ) has just begun to be introduced to teachers to ensure that students receive appropriate educational services. Unfortunately, this PJJ did not run well or optimally. This is because the teachers do not have the experience and knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) available for free such as Canvas. Therefore, the Community Service (PkM) team conducted strengthening training to increase knowledge and use of ICT for teachers at the State Junior High School (SMPN) 5 Borong, East Manggarai Regency. This activity uses presentation, demonstration (practice), and evaluation methods. This PkM activity shows that all of the participating teachers think that Canvas-based LMS training activities are beneficial and are committed to using Canvas LMS in their learning activities at school with students.
