Abstract

Abstract

Learning English as a foreign language is very challenging for both teachers and students in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara of Indonesia. The challenges are primarily caused by their lack of exposure to the authentic environment of English. In dealing with this phenomenon, the appropriate listening practices expect to help the learners to obtain and construct their knowledge of English as well as to acquire more comprehensible input. This article reports an investigation on the EFL learners’ attitudes toward the extensive listening practices. It applied mixed-method research procedures involving 55 students of the English language and education program of Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. The data were collected through a survey coupled with Focus Group Discussions with 15 participants. This research revealed that the learners' attitudes are identified into two main categories called positive and negative attitudes. In this case, 38 % of the participants have positive attitudes toward extensive listening practices and 62% of the participant reflected the negative attitude toward the extensive listening practices. Learners with a positive attitude had a very strong awareness of the significance of listening skills in L2 learning. To improve their listening skills, they develop their listening practices outside the classroom consistently. Meanwhile, learners with negative attitudes were categorized as dependent learners who practiced their listening skills during the listening course only. This group of learners was less aware of the significance of listening skills in L2 learning and their listening practices were highly dependent on the teachers' instruction. It showcased that both of the learners’ internal and external factors were strongly contributed to this poor extensive listening practices.  The EFL teachers are then strongly suggested to strengthen the learners’ awareness on the significance of Listening Skills in L2 learning as well as design more instructed extensive listening practices outside the classroom.

Abstract

Natural charm, cultural attractions and agro-tourism are the main objects of Meler tourism village. These tourism objects not only provide a wonderful natural persona (rice field spider web terrace) but also a variety of traditional dances that contain historical, educational and humanistic values that are universally applicable. These advantages can be utilized to boost the economy of rural communities. However, tourism village administrators must be digitally literate in order to maximize the economic impact of these tourism assets. The outcome target of this community service is to improve the digital literacy skills of the seven Meler tourist village administrators. This community service was carried out at the Meler village office for two months (May – June 2021), twice a week. A number of methods have been applied to meet the intended outcome targets, namely lecturing, questions and answers, discussions, demonstrations and presentations. The results indicate that the training participants have understood and applied the concept of digital literacy in managing tourism villages.

Abstract

Analysing gender issues in the teaching materials in the textbook is crucial as students' way of perceiving gender in their daily lives might be shaped by what they have learned at school. This research concerns analysing how gender representation in two EFL textbooks utilized in Indonesian secondary schools, Pathway to English for SMA/MA grade, later called textbook 1 in this study and Forward an English Course for Vocational School Students Grade VII, which was later called textbook 2. Both were published by Erlangga. The theory of personal characters proposed by (Brugeilles and Sylvie, 2009) was used as the basis theory in this study. Employing mixed-method research approaches, the researchers analysed how visuals in both textbooks portrayed gender representation by focusing on the frequency of pictures of male and female characters, occupations and activities. The study reveals that the two books show an imbalance of gender representation in all three aspects. Gender bias, especially for female occupations and activities, is apparent in the two textbooks. This study suggests that EFL teachers evaluate their textbooks to advocate for gender equality in the classroom.

Abstract

The available Indonesian language textbooks, both compulsory and commercial, might not fully meet the students' future needs and industrial demands. This study examines the concept of redesigning Indonesian language textbooks based on students' needs analysis, presenting a critical review of several relevant studies from journals, conference articles, and other permanent references. This study reveals three primary results. First, teachers are responsible for evaluating the textbooks' content and determining how they can contextually adapt and modify it without losing the essence of curriculum demands. Secondly, teachers are supposed to be aware of the students' needs to facilitate the demands of the current context. A need analysis will help the teachers to get an overview of the aspects that must be adapted in Indonesian language textbooks. Thirdly, through a critical and in-depth review of the textbooks, it was found that it is necessary to redesign a model of Indonesian language textbooks, particularly the grammar textbook model, the listening and speaking skills textbook model, and the reading and writing skills textbook model. The expected product should be organized as an integrative textbook package and designed in a digital model that can be easily accessed through the network.

Abstract

The benefits of extensive listening have been documented in several studies, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) listening. These studies constructed the theoretical and pedagogical frameworks for its implementation, including the typical materials students can utilize to organize extensive listening practices. In light of this, this paper presents a brief overview of the listening materials used by the students in this setting and the challenges they faced in utilizing them for extensive listening practices. This qualitative study was designed as a survey involving 79 students from a private university in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. In collecting the data, the researchers administered an unstructured questionnaire combining close-ended and open-ended questions providing chances for the respondents to answer the questions in their own words. The result of this study confirmed that extensive listening is challenging to practice. In this case, students need knowledge about the pedagogy of extensive listening practices results in inappropriate material selections. This study recommends teachers' involvement in assisting the material selection that meets the student's pace to help students achieve more definite outcomes of the extensive listening practices.
