Abstract

The family Araceae, the taro family, has a terrestrial habitus, for better or for worse, submerged or submerged in water. Araceae is also very abundant and diverse in wet tropical areas such as the Bukum Village Forest area. This study aims to determine the types of the Araceae family, the diversity index and the distribution pattern of the Araceae family in the Forest of Bukum Village, Sibolangit District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra which was carried out in December 2021 - February 2022. The method used was exploratory with the technique of making square plots. by purposive sampling on 2 transects, each of which has 8 plots of observations. The results of the study were 24 species from the Araceae family with the most common species being Schismatoglottis calyptrata (Roxb) with 157 individuals. There are at least 4 species of individuals, namely Aglaonema commutatum Schott, Aglaonema nebulosum N.E.Br., Homalomena rostrata Griff. and Syngonium podophyllum Schott by 2 individuals. The diversity index of transect I was 2.00 and transect II was 2.36. The diversity index data shows moderate environmental diversity, because the productivity is quite high, the ecosystem condition is balanced and the ecological pressure is moderate. The morisita index on transect I of 1.59 shows the pattern of distribution is moderate, this occurs due to uneven (uniform) abiotic conditions although in a narrow location. The morisita index on transect II of 0.98 indicates an even distribution pattern, due to individual competition which encourages the distribution of space evenly.

Abstract

Cadmium is a non-essential, carcinogenic metal commonly found in the environment. It can enter the human body through food consumption and has the potential to disrupt physiological systems, including the hematopoietic system. Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) contain various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and antioxidants, which play a role in neutralizing free radicals. This study aims to analyze the effect of ethanol extract of bay leaves on erythrocyte, leukocyte, platelet counts, hemoglobin levels, and hematocrit in white rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) exposed to cadmium chloride (CdCl₂). The study employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with 20 rats divided into five treatment groups: a negative control, a positive control (CdCl₂ 40 mg/kgBW), and three treatment groups receiving bay leaf extract at doses of 200, 300, and 400 mg/kgBW. The research procedures included phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity testing, and blood profile analysis. The obtained data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Duncan's post hoc test if significant differences were found. The results showed that administration of ethanol extract of bay leaves was able to restore blood parameters in rats to normal levels, with an optimal dose of 400 mg/kgBW.

Abstract

Periphyton is one of the biotic components, living attached to various substrates has an important role in providing primary productivity of waters. The purpose of this study was to determine the identification of species, the structure of the periphyton community in natural and artificial substrates, the water quality of the Namu Sira-sira River in Langkat Regency. The data collection method was carried out using the "Purposive Random Sampling" method at three stations according to community activities in the research area. The results of the study obtained species found in natural substrates were 25 species and artificial substrates were 27 species. The community structure including the diversity index (H ') is included in the medium category with a value of 2.48 on natural substrates and artificial substrates with a value of 2.50. The uniformity index value (E) on natural substrates is 0.89 and artificial substrates are 0.90 categorized as high because the distribution of species in each station is even. Periphyton communities on natural substrates have advantages in terms of abundance and diversity compared to artificial substrates due to the complex interactions between environmental factors, substrate quality, and ecological processes that support their growth
