Abstract

Liquid smoke is the result of pyrolysis of various types of biomass used in various industrial applications, including food preservation and waste treatment. This study aims to design and test a liquid smoke production device with a capacity of 120 ml per hour using six types of raw materials: coconut husk, coconut shell, straw, rice husk, corn cob, and corn stalk. The graph of the test results shows that the second experiment (test 2) produced a higher volume of liquid smoke than the first experiment (test 1), with the maximum volume reaching 310 ml. Nonetheless, the processing time varies depending on the type of raw material used. The results of this study show that optimizing the pyrolysis process can improve the efficiency of liquid smoke production, both in terms of volume and processing time. Thus, the device design used in this study has the potential to be further developed to increase production capacity and efficiency. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strength of the 20-ton capacity welding test equipment frame using SolidWorks software-based simulation. The simulation evaluates the stress distribution, strain, and safety factor of the frame structure when receiving the maximum load. Analysis using the finite element method (FEA) is performed by modeling the frame along with boundary conditions and loads that match the actual test conditions. The simulation results show that the maximum stresses in the structure are still below the yield limit of the material, so the frame is considered safe to use. The highest stresses are distributed at the top of the frame especially around the load application area, while the bottom and legs of the frame experience lower stresses. The minimum factor of safety obtained in the simulation is 6.6 which indicates that the structure has high reliability against the applied load. Based on these results, the welding test equipment frame design can be said to be strong enough and safe to use for testing with a capacity of 20 tons. However, design optimization can still be done to improve the strength of the structure.

Abstract

Kanagarian Salo kabupaten Agam adalah sebuah wilayah yang mata pencarian masyarakatnya adalah bertani. Salah satu komoditi yang banyak ditanam adalah tanaman jagung karna tanaman ini mudah tumbuh, proses perawatan sangat mudah dan bangsa pasar juga bagus untuk pemenuhan kebutuhan pakan peternakan. Kegiatan pemipilan jagung di Nagari salo masih manual sehingga tidak efektif dan efisien dalam proses pemipilan membutuhkan waktu 1 minggu untuk pemipilan 1 ton jagung. Tujuan kegiatan PKM adalah menyumbangkan alat bantu pemipil jagung pada mitra supaya proses kerja mitra lebih efektif dan efisien. Metoda yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah rancang bangun alat bantu pemipil sesuai dengan kebutuhan mitra dan pelatihan singkat penggunaan alat. Hasil yang didapat pada kegiatan ini telah dihasilkan mesin pemipil kapasitas 250 kg/jam dengan penggerak motor bensin kapasitas 5HP telah berfungsi dengan baik dan diserahkan ke mitra. Mitra juga diberikan pelatihan singkat tentang pengoperasian alat. Alat tersebut telah digunakan oleh mitra untuk kegiatan pemipilan. Kegiatan ini memberikan dampak positif bagi perekonomian berkelanjutan pada mitra yang melibatkan peningkatan produktivitas, efisiensi kerja, dan pendapatan petani, sekaligus mengurangi beban kerja manual

Abstract

The coconut frond cutter or coconut frond shredder is a device used to transform coconut fronds into small pieces, even turning them into a finely textured material. This study examines the design and development of a coconut-chopping machine that uses an 8 HP combustion motor. Structural analysis was performed on the machine frame by considering the maximum and minimum Von Mises Stresses. The analysis results show that the maximum Von Mises Stress in the frame is 1.670e+06 N/mm², while the minimum stress is 2.338e+04 N/mm². The displacement of the frame was observed at 2.642e-02 mm to 1.000e-30 mm. The safety factor of the frame was found to be 1.366e+02, indicating an adequate level of safety. Next, this study analyzed the shredding capacity of the machine. The analysis showed that the largest shredding capacity was 3619.30 kg/hour, which occurred at a high rotation of young fronds, producing fine shreds. Meanwhile, the smallest shredding capacity of 612.66 kg/hour occurs at low rotation of old fronds and produces coarse shreds. These results provide essential insights into using coconut shredding machines based on the rotation level and the processed material. This research contributes to the development of efficient and effective coconut processing technology.

Abstract

Noise pollution has become an increasingly concerning environmental issue, driving the development of sustainable acoustic materials as alternatives to conventional synthetic materials. This research conducts a systematic literature review on the acoustic effectiveness of natural fiber-based nanocellulose in sound isolation and absorption applications. The research method employs a qualitative approach with a comprehensive analysis of scientific publications from Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases over the past ten years. The review results indicate that modification of natural fibers such as coconut coir, hemp fiber, banana pseudostem, and rice straw with nanocellulose at a concentration of 1-1.5% w/v is capable of improve sound absorption coefficients up to 0.7-0.9 in the 500-2000 Hz frequency range, comparable to synthetic materials such as fiberglass and mineral wool. This material demonstrates advantages in terms of dimensional stability improvement of 35-40%, lightweight density (150-300 kg/m³), balanced acoustic characteristics across a broad frequency spectrum, and biodegradable properties providing minimal environmental impact. The potential applications of this material are extensive in construction, automotive, and acoustic industries, with noise reduction capabilities of up to 8-12 dB. Despite facing challenges in raw material variability and production scalability, natural fiber and nanocellulose-based acoustic materials have promising prospects as sustainable solutions to global noise pollution problems with competitive performance against conventional materials.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the reduction of workplace injuries among workers at PT X. Using a quantitative research design with a pre-test and post-test survey approach, data were collected from 110 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The results demonstrated a significant decrease in workplace injuries after the implementation of PPE, with the average injury score dropping from 2.27 before PPE use to 1.50 after PPE use (p-value = 0.000). These findings indicate that the use of PPE is highly effective in reducing both the frequency and severity of workplace injuries. Factors such as worker discipline, awareness, and knowledge significantly influence the effectiveness of PPE use. The study concludes that consistent and proper use of PPE, supported by worker education and the availability of quality equipment, can substantially enhance workplace safety and reduce occupational health risks

Abstract

Minyak bekas masak adalah limbah dari rumah yang sering dibuang sembarangan atau dipakai lagi dalam memasak. Penggunaan kembali minyak bekas dapat menimbulkan zat berbahaya seperti senyawa karsinogenik asam lemak trans dan radikal bebas yang dapat meningkatkan kemungkinan terjadinya penyakit degeneratif. Selain itu, membuangnya ke dalam saluran air dapat mencemari lingkungan serta membahayakan kesehatan masyarakat. Pemakaian minyak jelantah sampai dua kali pemanasan masih dapat ditoleransi. Namun jika lebih dari dua kali, terlebih jika warnanya sudah berubah menjadi kehitam-hitaman, maka minyak tersebut sudah tidak baik dan harus dihindarkan. Kegiatan pengabdian pada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi kesehatan mengenai risiko minyak jelantah bagi kesehatan dan lingkungan, serta memberikan pelatihan untuk mengolahnya menjadi produk yang berguna, seperti sabun dan lilin aromaterapi. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini mencakup penyuluhan kesehatan, demonstrasi, praktik langsung, dan penilaian peserta dengan memberikan kuisioner kepada peserta pengabdian kepada pengelola Bank Sampah Pasie Nan Tigo Kecamatan Koto Tangah Kota Padang. Hasil dari kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan peserta tentang bahaya kesehatan dari minyak bekas dan keterampilan mereka dalam membuat produk olahan yang aman dan memiliki nilai ekonomis, dimana peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mitra meningkat dari 48% ke 90%. Program ini menjadi contoh pendidikan kesehatan pencegahan yang berbasis pada pemberdayaan masyarakat dalam mengelola limbah rumah tangga.Kata kunci: minyak jelantah, edukasi kesehatan, sabun, lilin aromaterapi, pemberdayaan masyarakat

Abstract

Development of engraved products featuring institutional identity at Mechanical Engineering Department, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Barat offers promotional opportunities and commercialization potential. Manufacturing plaques, keychains, and name tags through CNC Milling technology demands precision in design formulation, toolpath optimization, and determination of cutting parameters that align with material properties. This research implements Nanjing Swansoft-based CNC Milling simulation for producing UMSB-branded gravis products, analyzing toolpath prediction accuracy, machining duration, and evaluating contributions toward production efficiency. The study applies descriptive-analytical approach with case study method conducted at Faculty of Engineering during November 2025 to January 2026. Research stages encompass comprehensive literature review on CNC milling technology and parameter optimization, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design creation using SolidWorks software for aluminum material sized 240×60×40 mm, G-code programming employing single tool strategy with Ø10mm end mill designated as T01, configuration of FANUC 0i-M controller with G54 work coordinate system, and execution of four machining phases: facing, roughing, semi-finishing, and finishing operations targeting 20 mm engraving depth. Dimensional validation demonstrates accuracy within ±0.1 mm tolerance on critical dimensions with maximum deviation of ±1.5% in engraving zones, maintaining compliance with manufacturing tolerance limits for institutional souvenir applications. Actual simulation cycle time recorded 68 minutes 50 seconds with deviation below 5% from initial programming calculations. Cutting force monitoring revealed optimal range between 90-140 N without collision detection warnings. Surface quality assessment indicates superior finishing profiles with uniform stepover ridge formation and sharp edge definition on UMSB typography elements without excessive burr formation. Integration of CAD-CAM systems through simulation validates feasibility of CNC instructions for actual machine implementation, confirming Nanjing Swansoft simulator effectiveness as cost-efficient tool for programming verification and material waste reduction supporting manufacturing digitalization within Industry 4.0 framework.

Abstract

The crystal ice shaving process is one of the important stages in crystal ice production that affects the quality and efficiency of production, especially on a small scale business. In practice, the ice shaving machines used often have sizes that do not match the production capacity and are less efficient in energy consumption. These problems encourage the need to design a mini-scale crystal ice shaving machine that suits user needs. This study aims to design a mini-scale crystal ice shaving machine with a capacity of 5 kg/hour that has compact dimensions, is energy efficient, and is able to produce consistent ice shavings. The research method used is a machine design based on mechanical engineering calculations, including analysis of power requirements, transmission systems, machine elements, and modeling using SolidWorks software. The design results show that the machine with a 1 HP motor, a 14:1 pulley-belt transmission system, and a 250 mm diameter rotor is capable of producing a working rotation of 100 rpm with adequate torque. The resulting design is considered suitable for development to the manufacturing stage.
