Abstract

ON TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR THE APPLICATION OF HUMAN SKILLS IN THE COURSE OF ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION AND ASIA (TITAS) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIAExcessive focus on academics and learning environment that tends to measure excellence based on performance in examinations was found not to give an advantage to students in acquiring soft skills through the teaching and learning process (T&L) of a subject. This study is a preliminary study and as a start focuses on one of the MPU which is TITAS. It aims to explain the innovations implemented on TITAS courses, especially related to learning strategies at the University of Malaya, and look at students' perceptions of learning strategy innovations that apply the elements of Soft Skills (KI) and their achievements in obtaining the KI. As a preliminary study, only two elements of KI were the focus, namely teamwork skills and communication skills. The research method used is a library study to explain the implementation of the TITAS course and analyze student achievement in the KI of this course. Questionnaires were also distributed to 120 students who have taken TITAS courses and the findings of the study are descriptive in the form of percentage and frequency or frequency to analyze the data. The results of this study found that students' perceptions of the innovation of learning strategies and assessment methods implemented are good. This has also had a positive impact on the achievements obtained in the evaluation of coursework and their KI achievement. Students do not face problems in performing tasks in groups consisting of various ethnicities and backgrounds.

Abstract

This study examines the role of community-based education in the context of Islam as a means of democratizing education and integrating local wisdom, motivated by the need for a more inclusive and responsive education system. Using a literature study method, this research analyzes primary and secondary sources related to Islamic education, democratization, and local wisdom. The results reveal that community-based education has strong historical and normative roots in Islamic tradition, reflected in various forms of traditional educational institutions such as mosques, kuttabs, and pesantrens. This educational model is proven to encourage active community participation, decentralization of decision-making, and integration of local values into the curriculum. However, its implementation faces challenges in balancing national standards with local autonomy, as well as potential conflicts between universal Islamic values and local cultural practices. This study highlights the complexity of integrating local wisdom into modern Islamic education in the era of globalization, paving the way for further research on optimal mechanisms for adapting this educational model to increasingly diverse Muslim societies.

Abstract

This paper reviews on strategies or  approaches made by Community Learing Centers/CLC teachers to teach and internalize the knowledge about Indonesian values and cultures for Indonesian students who are born and raised overseas particulary Indonesian students in CLCs in Sabah, Malaysia. Knowledge of Indonesian values and culture will encourage students to enhance their sense of nationalism and help them to identify themselves as Indonesians. This paper aims to examine the strategies or approaches of CLC's teachers in enhancing cultural and civic literacy among their students of Indonesian nationals. This paper untilizes qualitative method through interviews and close observations of teachers of CLCs in applying their strategies to educate their students in regarding their Indonesian identity. After obtaining the data, the analysis is conducted through the interactive analysis particularly under the scope of Miles and Huberman's theories. Further examination founds that strategies employed by CLC teachers to enhance cultural and civic literacy for their students are including habituation and implementation of integrated learning with Indonesian cultural elements, oral or written, through flag ceremonies, video screenings, pictures, books, festivals, extracurricular activities, and competitions.

Abstract

This study critically examines two foundational approaches in social science: positivism and Ibn Khaldun's theoretical framework. Through comprehensive library research analyzing primary and secondary sources, we explore the ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions of both paradigms. Positivism, approaches social phenomena through rigid scientific methodologies, emphasizing empirical observation and quantitative measurement while pursuing objective, universal social laws. This perspective, while influential in modern social science development, often reduces complex social realities to measurable variables, neglecting subjective dimensions like values, culture, and historical contexts. In contrast, Ibn Khaldun's 14th-century framework, particularly his concept of asabiyyah (group solidarity), offers a more dynamic understanding of social phenomena by integrating empirical observation with philosophical reflection and historical context. This research demonstrates how Ibn Khaldun's approach acknowledges the multidimensional nature of social reality, including moral, spiritual, and cultural factors that remain influential in social development cycles. The comparative analysis reveals that while positivism provides methodological rigor, Ibn Khaldun's holistic perspective better captures the complexity and fluidity of social dynamics, making it particularly relevant for contemporary social analysis seeking to transcend mechanistic explanations. This study contributes to ongoing discourse about developing more integrative approaches in social science that balance empirical observation with contextual understanding.
