Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the influence of peer editing on SMA Negeri 2 Kupang students' writing in argumentative and descriptive, as well as the components of writing that were altered, the impact on the students' writing scores and also the comparison impact of this peer editing based on students’ gender. To support the findings, this study is classified as dominating descriptive qualitative and blended with descriptive quantitative methods. However, the use of qualitative here is just to support the finding by expressing the influence of peer editing on students' writing through scoring. The findings of this study reveal that peer editing has both beneficial and negative effects on students' argumentative writing. The dominant impact found in this students’ writing is positive impact because there is only one negative impact has been determined. As the conclusion, this peer editing has some positive impacts to the component of writing such as, component of grammar, content, vocabulary, organization and mechanic. Second, the most positive impact of applying peer editing in argumentative writing is on the component of grammar. Third, the most component of writing that have been edited by the peers is grammar. Fourth, from the score of writing have been calculated, it is known that students’ writing score after editing session is more increase. Fifth, the result shows that most of editing have done in the argumentative writing is focus on grammatical component, and vocabulary, because from 59 from 74 editing is applied on grammatical component. The last, the comparison impact between male and female students writing is dominantly conducted on female students writing result and  score.

Abstract

Savu language, Mehara dialect is the language of the Savu indigenous people located in Savu island, Savu Raijua district, East Nusa Tengggara province. This paper only focuses on the Mehara dialect of Savu language. The purpose of this research is to reveal the sound process or phonology of Savu language in Mehara dialect. In this article, the theory used is the Generative phonology approach with qualitative methods. The result of this paper is that Savu language Mehara dialect has 25 phonemes consisting of 6 vowel phonemes and 19 consonant phonemes. Each of these phonemes is a phoneme of origin that can form base morphemes phonetically. (1) Mehara dialect of Savu language has 11 syllable structures. (2). Mehara dialect has 2 phonological processes, namely the process of deletion, and the process of adding glottal [ ' ]. (3). Mehara Savu dialect is a vocalic language because there are no consonants at the end of words. (4). Another prominent feature of Mehara dialect is the sound segments: bilabial aspirate /bh/, dental aspirate /dh/, palatal aspirate /dj/, and velar aspirate /gh/

Abstract

This article entitle A Study on the Speaking Ability of the First Grade Students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the Academic Year 2023/2024.  This study takes place at the first grade of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang. This study formulated as follows. (1). To what extend are the first grade of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang able to speak English?. (2). What are the difficulties encountered by the first grade of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in speaking English? The aims of this study are: (1). To know the extend of the first grade of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang able to speak English, and (2). To find out the difficulties encountered by the first grade of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in speaking English.  In this research, the writer used descriptive method. The ability of the first semester students of English Study Program in the academic year 2023/2024 in a study on the speaking ability were in at good level. It was proved by the students' individual scores which is about 70 to 79 of their score and the students' ability level is about 44% which is higher than the others. It was followed by poor level, fair level and excellent level. Based on the students' item difficulty, it shows that there were four number of items who considered as the difficulty items, namely, item number 3 (80%). 12 (76%), 26 (64%) and 29 (60%). It indicates that some of the students had difficult in doing paraphrasing test which deals with family topic than matching speaking test. In this case, they had speaking limitation in order to express the new words given to them 52.

Abstract

This study analysis the figurative language used in the album's song lyrics Adele “30”. The songwriter plays with words and language to create power attractiveness and uniqueness of the song lyrics. Figurative language has the ability to more impact on readers. This study aims to answer two research problems, namely: (1) To identify the types of figurative language used in the lyrics of Adele's album track "30". (2) Analysis the meaning of language allusion contained in the lyrics of Adele's album song “30”. Data analysis based on figurative language theory put forward by Xu Youzhi (2005) and the theory of meaning put forward by Rozakis (1995). The results of this study shows that there are 5 types of figurative language found in Adele's album “30”. They are simile, personification, metaphor, hyperbole, irony, and. This study found (1 simile, 10 personifications, 4 metaphors, 7 hyperboles, 1 irony). And vice versa in analysing the meaning contextual research found several types of meaning used in song lyrics, namely the stylistic figurative language.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe and explain the meaning contained in the Bau Lolon ceremony for the people of Puhu Village, East Adonara District, East Flores Regency. The benefits of this study are that theoretically the results of this research are useful for (1) developing theoretical concepts as well as procedures and benefits of carrying out the Bau Lolon ceremony for the people of Puhu Village, East Adonara District, East Flores Regency; (2) Can add insight and cultural knowledge related to traditional rituals. While the practical benefits are (1) as input for the East Flores government to keep and maintain the meaning of the Bau Lolon ritual for the people of Puhu Village, East Adonara District, East Flores Regency; (2) as reference material and information in studying culture in the people of Puhu Village, East Adonara District, East Flores Regency; and (3) as an alternative material for local content lessons in schools. The theory used is the hermeneutical theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The results of the study show that the meaning contained in the Bau Lolon ceremony for the people of Puhu Village, East Adonara District, East Flores Regency is as follows: (1) Religious meaning; (2) The meaning of respect for the ancestors; (3) The meaning of application and protection; and (4) cultural meaning.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Duolingo application in teaching English skills to eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tasifeto Timur. With the increasing integration of technology in education, this research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Duolingo as a tool for enhancing language acquisition and engagementt among learners. Through a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes student performance, engagement levels, and overall satisfaction with the application compared to traditional teaching methods. The results indicate a significant improvement in vocabulary retention, grammatical proficiency, and conversational skills among students utilizing Duolingo. Additionally, qualitative feedback highlights the app's user-friendly interface and gamified learning experience as motivating factors.

Abstract

Kulut kaet, or mourning lament, is an important tradition in the Dawan ethnic community in South Central Timor District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which carries deep religious significance. It is more than just an expression of grief over loss, but also a means of honoring the spirit of the deceased and maintaining the connection between the living world and the spiritual world. This article aims to explore the religious significance of the Kulut kaet emphasizing the spiritual dimension of the mourning ritual. Through a qualitative and ethnographic approach, this study analyses how Kulut kaet functions as a form of respect for the spirits of the deceased, as a way of maintaining relationships with ancestors, as well as a collective healing mechanism for the Dawan community. The results show that Kulut kaet is not only an expression of personal grief, but also a ritual that involves the community in the process of grieving together. This lament becomes important in strengthening social solidarity, preserving traditions, and carrying out religious obligations as a tribute to the spirits of the deceased.

Abstract

The primary aim is to assess students' understanding and application of punctuation rules while identifying common challenges faced in their writing. Employing a qualitative methods approach, data were gathered through writing samples and surveys to provide a comprehensive evaluation of punctuation skills. Findings reveal varying levels of proficiency, with notable difficulties in fundamental punctuation rules that adversely impact overall writing quality. The analysis highlights patterns of struggle and the effectiveness of current instructional practices. The discussion emphasizes the need for targeted pedagogical strategies to address these gaps, advocating for practical exercises and personalized feedback in the curriculum. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into punctuation proficiency, offering recommendations to enhance writing skills and instructional methods, ultimately shaping competent future educators and enriching the educational experience.

Abstract

Fatumnasi is renowned for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. The community in this village maintains strong kinship, preserves traditional customs, and welcomes visitors as family. The village boasts potential for mountain and cultural tourism, including traditional dances and local cuisine from the Dawan. As a pilot project for sustainable tourism development, the village requires competent human resources to manage these potentials. However, the tourism awareness group in Fatumnasi faces challenges in tourism management, particularly regarding English language skills and knowledge of local wisdom. The Community Service Team from the University of Persatuan Guru 1945 NTT collaborated with Pokdarwis to identify these issues. Together, they agreed to conduct English language training and provide assistance in promoting local cultural products. The goal of this activity was to enhance English proficiency and understanding of local culture to attract more tourists. The results shows that: (a) English for Specific Purposes training was successfully implemented for Pokdarwis in Fatumnasi; (b) Improved understanding among the member of Pokdarwis regarding the history and philosophical elements of each traditional weaving motif. This was evidenced by their ability to create narratives explaining the cultural values behind each motif, which is expected to captivate tourists and encourage longer stays in Fatumnasi.
