Abstract

Previous research on patients, families and communities has discussed the perception of mental illness and how stigma has a very constant impact on every aspect of the lives of individuals with mental illness. However, this issue has not been studied in the Malaysian context until now. The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions and experiences that mental health patients with stigma have in Malaysia, as well as how it affects their daily lives. This qualitative research was conducted in Kuala Lumpur using semi-structured interviews with eight university students (three males and five females) undergoing outpatient treatment. Informants were selected using the snowball method, and with diagnoses that included depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to identify themes regarding patients’ experiences of stigmatization, negative impacts, and solutions to overcome them. The results showed that social stigma is caused by the social environment, particularly through relationships with family and friends, potentially placing patients in a more intrusive environment, which reduces the level of support available during recovery. The study concluded that for those with mental illness, stigma is a pervasive landmine that they face daily through hurtful comments or jokes.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has challenged conventional models of cultural preservation, particularly in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH). This study aims to analyze the digitization of ICH in the era of disruption through the utilization of social media as a strategy for cultural preservation and education in elementary schools in Sumenep District, Indonesia. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research involved 187 elementary students through structured surveys and 17 key informants through in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were processed using SPSS, while qualitative data were thematically coded and interpreted. The findings demonstrate that while students possess a general understanding of ICH, conceptual depth remains uneven, particularly regarding ICH's philosophical, spatial, and identity dimensions. Social media platforms—primarily YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, play a pivotal role in enhancing students’ engagement with cultural content, especially when the content is presented in visual-textual formats. Both teachers and students reported significant positive impacts, including improved cultural awareness, creativity, and appreciation for national identity. However, minor negative implications were also noted, such as distraction and misinformation. The study confirms that social media, when strategically integrated into pedagogy, enhances access to ICH knowledge and fosters cultural resilience among younger generations. In conclusion, the integration of digital platforms into cultural education constitutes an effective mechanism for preserving ICH and cultivating intergenerational cultural continuity in the digital age.

Abstract

Background: Family caregivers play a crucial role in providing continuous support to individuals with chronic illnesses. Their responsibilities extend beyond the well-being of patients, influencing both patient health outcomes and their own. Caregiving entails significant responsibilities and sacrifices, requiring caregivers to navigate evolving roles and care needs over time. Existing literature highlights the emotional and psychological challenges faced by caregivers, including role transitions and stress. However, most studies focus on caregiving experiences rather than the specific transitional phases caregivers undergo after assuming their responsibilities. Objective: This study aimed to explore the transitional phases experienced by caregivers of chronically ill patients using an inductive approach, specifically grounded theory methodology. Methods: This study employed a grounded theory (GT) approach involving 33 participants, including 24 caregivers and nine professional helpers. Data collection and analysis were carried out between April 2022 and January 2024. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling based on predetermined criteria. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and memos and analyzed using NVivo 12 software. Several measures were undertaken to ensure the validity and reliability of the data. Results: Findings yielded five stages of life transition, namely, (1) confusion, (2) conflict, (3) consideration, (4) adjustment, and (5) acceptance. Conclusion: This study contributes to the literature by providing new insight into the life transition phases experienced by family caregivers. It offers meaningful implications for nursing practice, particularly in providing holistic support to family caregivers of individuals with chronic illness. It helps nurses to design more targeted, phase-specific interventions that focus on caregivers’ psychosocial needs at each phase. The final model provides a beneficial premise for the development of clinical guidelines and support frameworks that are more responsive to the real experiences of caregivers.

Abstract

This study focuses on the viewership behaviour patterns, motivations for viewership, viewership preference for reality TV programmes, and perceptions of reality TV based on demographic aspects. It examined the consumption of reality TV programmes among Malaysian society through quantitative method research. This involved the use of the survey based on a questionnaire as the instrument for the data collection. This study distributed questionnaires among 400 Malaysian respondents and findings show that reality TV has a very high viewership among the Malaysian population. This is due to the fact that Malaysian viewers find the programmes very relatable and entertaining. The reality TV programme featured in the survey also attracted strong viewership among respondents. Female respondents in Malaysia were found to watch reality TV programmes more frequently than males. This research provides insights into the consumption patterns among multi-ethnic Malaysians, including insights into viewing behaviours, perceived realism, motivations for watching, connectedness to the content, and the influence of gender and age on these aspects.
