Based on the results of PKM training, it was found that participants could easily write down their ideas in writing due to consideration of their own topic choices, knowledge of situations and conditions, especially regarding the abilities of their students, and the use of language in written texts according to the true intentions of the writer as PKM participants. However, there is an obstacle, especially in understanding the use of English grammar in writing English reading texts. So, it is deemed necessary to carry out monitoring and mentoring activities to check the use of English grammar properly and correctly

Abstract

The tradition of "uang panai'", a traditional dowry in Bugis-Makassar wedding ceremonies, plays a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary societal changes. This study adopts a qualitative ethnographic approach to explore the evolving criteria for determining the price of uang panai' and its implications on social dynamics within the Bugis-Makassar community. Data were collected through observations and interviews with informants from various districts, supplemented by literature studies. The findings reveal that while lineage remains a predominant criterion, factors such as wealth, education, and occupation have gained significant importance. Wealthy and noble families often demand higher uang panai' to maintain their social status and ensure compatible marital matches. Education and occupation also significantly influence the dowry's value, reflecting the community's increasing emphasis on social mobility and economic stability. This study's novelty lies in its detailed examination of the interplay between traditional practices and modern socioeconomic factors, providing a comprehensive understanding of uang panai's' evolving role. The research highlights the dual function of uang panai' as a symbol of respect and a potential source of economic pressure, offering insights for balancing cultural preservation with economic realities. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on cultural adaptation and suggest avenues for future research on mitigating financial burdens associated with traditional practices. By elucidating the contemporary dynamics of uang panai', this study enhances our understanding of cultural practices and their adaptation in a rapidly changing society.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how the implementation of ICT apps influences students’ engagement in speaking class. In the current digital era, ICT apps have become an integral part of education. However, it remains unclear how the use of ICT apps affects students’ engagement in speaking class. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the implementation of ICT apps on students’ engagement in speaking class. Qualitative research with a descriptive design was adapted in this study. The participants were students of the English Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Through a purposive sampling technique, the lecturer and students of Class A were selected as the research participants. The instruments used were observation checklists and notes to collect the data. The researchers used three steps to analyze the data, there were data reduction, data display, drawing and verifying conclusion. The research findings revealed lecturer plays a crucial role in facilitating engagement by providing challenging tasks and opportunities for students to express themselves. Ultimately, high levels of students’ engagement not only contribute to individual learning outcomes but also foster a sense of validation within the university community, promoting broader talent development and interaction among students and staff. This study concluded that the lecturer plays a crucial role in encouraging engagement by providing challenging tasks. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that students assist themselves and their peers in learning speaking with ICT apps. Lecturers can utilize ICT apps in the English teaching and learning process effectively, thus improving the quality of education and preparing students with updated knowledge to adapt to the changing world. Additionally, other researchers can use this study as a reference for recommending study material to increase insight and conduct studies related to the implementation of ICT apps in the speaking class.

Abstract

Abstract. This article explores the complexities of politeness in cross-cultural interactions as depicted in Sofia Coppola's 2003 film, Lost in Translation. Set in Tokyo, the film provides a rich narrative for analyzing the pragmatic challenges faced by its two American protagonists, Bob Harris and Charlotte, as they navigate an unfamiliar linguistic and cultural landscape. Drawing upon Brown and Levinson's politeness theory and contemporary models of intercultural pragmatics, this study examines how face-threatening acts (FTAs), politeness strategies, and communicative misunderstandings are portrayed. The analysis focuses on key scenes that highlight the divergence in communication styles between American and Japanese cultures, particularly concerning directness, indirectness, the use of silence, and non-verbal cues. The discussion reveals how the film masterfully illustrates the limitations of universal politeness maxims and emphasizes the role of cultural context in shaping perceptions of what is considered polite or impolite. Through a detailed cinematic analysis, the article argues that Lost in Translation serves as a poignant case study on how linguistic barriers and cultural dissonance can lead to feelings of alienation and a deeper search for connection. The findings contribute to the fields of intercultural communication, pragmatics, and film studies, offering insights into the nuanced dynamics of maintaining face in unfamiliar cultural settings.Key Words: Politeness Theory, Cross-Cultural Interaction, Intercultural Pragmatics, Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola, Face-Threatening Acts, Japanese Culture, Film Analysis

Abstract

This study aims to identify and determine the transactional communication model using Shockley-Zalabak’s Organizational Communication Process Model used by the employees in delivering transactional utterances in workplace management. The research method was qualitative with a descriptive design. The subjects of this study are employees in the academic and broadcasting workplaces. Data on the transactional communication model were collected through transcripts of observations accompanied by audio recordings. The findings of the study reveal that communication within organizational settings is fundamentally transactional, interactive, and context-dependent. Across all extracts, communication emerges not as a simple transmission of information but as a co-created process shaped by hierarchical roles, organizational procedures, feedback loops, and interpersonal dynamics.
