Abstract

The present qualitative study explores the perceptions of seven Thai undergraduate students in a university on the online learning medium when the COVID-19 pandemic hit this country. Semi-structured interviews were created to clarify the students' viewpoints on online learning medium. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze the transcriptions of the data collected from the online interviews. The study elicits three significant data themes that are connected to the research questions: the Thai students’ perception towards the online learning medium, their preference on the online learning medium, and the problems faced by them along using the online learning medium and the solving. Findings showed that the using of online learning mediums helped Thai students in lecturing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The most preferred online learning medium they use is WhatsApp application, followed by Google Meet as the second choice. They prefer WhatsApp to other online learning mediums or applications since it is stable, cheap, and easy to use. They also re-studied the lecturer’s explanation everywhere and anytime. The research found some problems students faced while using Google Meet or Zoom; the most common problem they faced was an unstable connection. While excessive internet data usage was another obstacle faced by them. To solve those problems, they frequently moved to another place providing free Wi-Fi or asked their friends or family to share the hotspot.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether the implementation of Snowball throwing technique can improve students’ speaking skill among the eight grade students of SMP Nurul Islam Jember. The focused on this research is speaking skill. This research was classified as Classroom Action Research (CAR) of Kemmish and Taggart which consisted of four procedures, namely planning the action, implementing the action, observing and reflecting. In this research, the researcher conducted two cycles. The cycle was applied on November 2020 which consisted of three meetings, two meetings for implementing the action and one meeting for students’ speaking test or post test. The result of this research showed that there was improvement of the students’ speaking skill. It could be seen from the result of the test which improved. The mean score of the pre-test was 55.46 the mean score of post-test 1 was 65.35. The mean score of post-test 2 was 79.46. The precentage of students who passed the minimum score in pre-test was 21%, in cyle 1 was 46%, and cycle 2 was 78%. It can be conclouded that there were improvement of students’ speaking skill by implementing snowball throwing technique.

Abstract

Nina Hayuningtyas, 2022: The Implementation of Snake and Ladder Game in Teaching Speaking: The Advantages and The Disadvantages. Speaking is one of the critical communication skills that students should be able to acquire. By speaking, they can convey thoughts, feelings, arguments, and ideas as well as emotions and other mental states. Yet, there are many problems faced by students in learning speaking. Due to those problems, choosing an appropriate media for teaching learning is an ability that every teacher must have. One of the entertaining and intriguing games that may be used to teach speaking is snake and ladder game. This study reports the advantages and the disadvantages of snake and ladder game in teaching speaking. While, the outcome can be summed up as follows: The Snake and Ladder game's design has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of the Snake and Ladder game is that it encourages students to practice speaking since it creates an enjoyable and relaxed learning environment. By forcing students to practice speaking since they must do so while playing, the snake and ladder game may help students indirectly enhance their English-speaking abilities. One of the drawbacks of the Snake and Ladder game is that it takes a lot of planning and practice time.

Abstract

English is one of the important aspects to be mastered in this era. English also the most widely used language in various aspects of life, including science, education, business, economics, technology, entertainment, etc. English is not always the first language in some countries. There are several countries that make English as a second language and even a foreign language. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, English is still a foreign language. English as a foreign language, has entered the education curriculum in Indonesia since Indonesia reached its heyday. This research used Classroom Action Reseach as the research design. Classroom Action Research was a research that aimed to improve the quality of learning practice, that focused on the process of the teaching and learning in the class. As a result of research obtained, Classroom Action Research had been conducted in two cycle that consisting of 2 meetings and 1 meeting for the post test in every cycle. The result pointed out that the implementation of Problem Based Learning could improve students’ speaking skills in the Eleventh-grade G2 students of MAN Bondowoso. The results showed that the application of Problem Based Learning could improve the speaking skills of class XI G2 students of MAN Bondowoso.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to outline how mind maps are used to help middle school students learn to read. Case study design is a qualitative research approach used in this research. The research was carried out at SMP Terpadu Madinatul Ulum. Observations, interviews, and document reviews were used to collect data. Meanwhile, triangulation of sources and techniques is used in data validation. Based on data analysis and student comments, the findings of this study indicate that mind maps enhance vocabulary acquisition by offering a visual representation of the content of the text.

Abstract

  This study aims to investigate the impact of negative connotations in acronyms used by 11 Indonesian government applications. The research focuses on understanding public perception of these acronyms, especially those with vulgar and sexist connotations. The methodology includes a combination of observation and survey methods. Primary data were collected by recording acronyms from official government websites, while secondary data were obtained through a questionnaire survey with 60 respondents (38 females and 22 males). The results show that 52.4% of respondents are aware of these acronyms, and over 90% perceive them as vulgar. Moreover, more than half of the respondents find these acronyms inappropriate for public services, with 52.4% associating them with gender-specific sexual connotations. The study highlights the need for a more culturally sensitive approach in branding public services to avoid alienating the public.

Abstract

The following difficulties have been reported to this study: students need media to facilitate their English learning, and uninteresting and dissatisfied classroom learning system. As a result, the study topic arising from these issues is the creation of comic strip media when combined with liveworksheet.com. The objective of this research is to describe the designing and developing multimedia learning using comic strip in narrative text for first grade students of Senior High School. The Design and Develop Research approach was employed in this study, which included planning, designing, developing, and validating. The trial subjects in the study included content expert, media expert, and English teacher of MA. Sunan AmDesign, Comic Strip Media, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Textpel. Observation, interviews, documentation, and validation sheets (from content expert, media experts, and English teachers) were employed as instruments. The average result reached for the design and development of learning media regarding comic strip media based on validation sheets from content experts, media experts, and English teachers is 89% (very high). As a result, it can be stated that the design and development of learning media for narrative text with reading comprehension abilities, particularly for tenth grade students, is extremely high to be employed in English language learning in the classroom.
