Abstract

This study was conducted to observe the profile of DNA Adduct (8-OHdG) formation as DNA damage indicators, by using calf thymus DNA incubated with toxic and carcinogenic compounds. The compounds which could trigger free radicals in this research were PAH(Benzo[a]Pyrene), TiO2, and CuCl2. Calf thymus DNA was incubated with Benzo[a]Pyrene and CuCl2 compounds under pH and temperature variations. The incubation of calf thymus DNA with TiO2-UV radiation (254 nm) was used to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the process of oxidative DNA damage. From this research, all of compounds have potency to trigger the formation of DNA Adduct (8-OHdG). The ratio of absorbance to assess the purity of DNA at 260 nm and 280 nm (λ260/ λ280 ) was measured at ~1.9. The shifted peaks at λmax were indicating changes on structures of DNA as a result of calf thymus DNA incubation with B[a]P and CuCl2. The highest level of 8-OHdG results in calf thymus DNA incubation with B[a]P and CuCl2 under pH 8.5 and incubation temperature at 60°C, was about 120.856 μg/L. Calf thymus DNA incubation with TiO2-UV radiation (254 nm) under pH 8.5 resulting 8-OHdG level at 57.025 μg/L.

Abstract

Optimization of Biodegradability and Toxicity Testing of Degradation Product from Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LAS) Surfactant as Cleaning Detergent Agent. Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LAS) is a surfactant used in laundry detergent as cleaning agent and toxic to aquatic organisms. Results shows, with the LAS concentration used (20 ppm) in medium, adaptation time and Acinetobacter sp. growth has shown better biodegradation ability than three other bacteria used Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas fluorescence, Bacillaria spp. Thus, Acinetobacter sp is used further for biodegradation process of LAS. Based on its biodegradation half-life using Acinetobacter sp, and with mixed culture (± 52.32% and ± 46.82% respectively) could be achieved in 4 (four) days, LAS could be categorized as a biodegradable compound. The toxicity assay is based on tetrazolium dye reduction with Rhizobium meliloti as indicator organism. LAS is more toxic than its intermediate product from biodegradation, with IC50 = 34.35 ppm, and the intermediate product, Ac and Cm, has IC50 = 446.19 ppm and 111.28 ppm respectively. Identification of intermediate products using IR and LC-MS analysis shows that the degradation product contains chemicals compounds with functional group as follows: benzene, benzoic acid, hydroxyl, and aliphatic carbons with large molecule weight. Until its half-time degradation time, LAS biodegradation process only occurs at the aliphatic carbon chain, and have not yet reached the stage of aromatic ring opening.

Abstract

This paper examines the interpretation of King Charles III’s Christmas Day Speech 2023,  utilizing the translation approaches proposed by Molina and Albir.  The study aims to uncover the linguistic and cultural complexities involved in interpreting royal discourse and evaluate the effectiveness of these translation strategies in this context.  Two primary objectives guide the analysis: first, to assess how Molina and Albir’s approaches enhance the interpretation’s linguistic fidelity, cultural adaptation, and communicative effectiveness;  second, to identify the challenges and strategies in translating royal speeches and the applicability of these methodologies.Through a systematic examination of the speech, the study highlights the efficacy most of the techniques, such as adaptation, calque, modulation, transposition, variation, equivalent, linguistic amplification, generalization, and literal translation.  The findings indicate that these strategies are instrumental in conveying the monarch’s intended message accurately and respectfully.  The analysis also reveals the practical challenges faced by interpreters, such as managing culturally specific references and maintaining the speech’s solemn register, and demonstrates how Molina and Albir’s approaches address the issues.  The study contributes to a deeper understanding of interpreting practices in the context of royal discourse, offering insights for interpreters, translators, and scholars alike.  It underscores the importance of strategic techniques selection to achieve both accuracy and cultural resonance. Ultimately, this research endeavors to enrich the discourse on interpreting royal speeches by offering a nuanced analysis informed by established interpreting methodologies.

Abstract

Keloids are skin disorders resulting from an abnormal wound healing response, often leading to excessive scar tissue growth. Keloids can be itchy, painful, and aesthetically disturbing. Keloid therapy varies, but until now, there is no standard method that is effective due to different patient responses. Racial, environmental, and genetic variables influence keloids. Various therapeutic techniques, such as surgery, cryotherapy, corticosteroid injections, laser light, and radiotherapy, have been used to treat keloids, but each has advantages and disadvantages. However, these treatments have limitations, such as high recurrence rates and patient discomfort. The application of radioisotope therapy, specifically using 32P, has emerged as a promising alternative. Radioisotope 32P emits β-particles, effectively inhibiting keloid cell growth by causing DNA damage and reducing collagen production. Studies show that 32P therapy significantly reduces keloid size and recurrence rates while causing minimal patient discomfort. Although there are potential risks, such as damage to surrounding healthy tissue, 32P therapy provides a practical and non-invasive option for keloid management. However, more research is required to fully understand this method’s effectiveness, safety, and long-term impact on keloid therapy, optimize treatment protocols, and minimize side effects.

Abstract

The study looks at using poetry 5.0 learning with blended language learning (BLL) to boost students' creativity and writing skills. A qualitative approach was taken, using virtual ethnography and classroom research, with data gathered through observations, interviews, and looking at student work. The findings show that BLL-based poetry 5.0 creates a lively and engaging learning space that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression. Visual prompts and digital tools, especially Instagram, allowed students to connect personal experiences and get quick feedback from classmates and teachers. This method improved students’ ability to share ideas, think about social issues, and create unique poetry. However, the study encountered some issues like limited face-to-face interaction, which point out areas for teaching improvement. Overall, combining poetry 5.0 with BLL shows promise as a creative teaching method that meets the needs of society 5.0. More research is suggested to look into its use in different educational settings.

Abstract

Historically sea has been a theatre for action, in which one party exercised its power over the others. But, is the history of maritime piracy as old as the history of human activities in seas? What is maritime piracy itself? Who can be considered maritime pirates? This question emerges because the definition of maritime piracy itself is dynamic. It changes in line with the changing contexts of space and time. This article attempts to answer these questions by referring to the case of maritime piracy in Southeast Asia from sixteenth to nineteenth century. This article aims to show the dynamics of the meaning of maritime piracy, and how such a notion could turn to be a convention. It uses secondary sources since it has no pretension to contribute new data, but rather it aims at showing how a notion of maritime piracy could turn to be a regime of truth.

Abstract

Social media is part of the digital change that colors the world of communication. The increasingly rapid development brings changes in the language structure adopted from online platforms. The TikTok and Instagram applications that are currently often used by teenagers present an informal language style. This informal language is called slang. Slang is often used by teenagers to simplify language and find identity. However, this often leads to hate speech, violence, and even impoliteness in communication. So this study aims to pay special attention to the challenges posed by slang. Politeness as a necessity must not fade among teenagers. This will also affect acts of violence, hatred and other immoral acts. In this study, researchers used quantitative methods. This is useful for determining the influence of the use of slang among teenagers in communicating. Comparison of views from the questions asked will be the results and discussions. The results of this study in the form of TikTok and Instagram allow teenagers to create and spread new slang quickly. Usage tends to adapt words and phrases according to trends and popular content on this platform. Teenagers who use social media intensively are more likely to use slang in everyday communication. The conclusion of this study is that social media, especially TikTok and Instagram, contribute significantly to the development of slang among teenagers. These platforms accelerate the spread and adoption of new terms, enable language creativity and help build group identity.
