Abstract

Statistics is a staple in the curriculum because it is considered necessary in everyday life. However, students often find statistics challenging. Students' difficulties in learning statistics are caused by several factors, including a lack of understanding of mathematical concepts and principles in solving problems. This study aimed to design and develop a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) for grade VIII statistics using the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach, with Pranata Mangsa as the learning context. The method used in this research was validation-type design research. This research produced an HLT of statistics material using pranata mangsa context consisting of 3 activities to help students understand and master the material. The activities of the HLT are 1) collecting, presenting, and analyzing data, 2) measuring centralized data, and 3) measuring data distribution. The results showed an HLT for teaching statistics using RME that can effectively support students of all ability levels. This HLT allows students to rediscover statistics concepts through horizontal and vertical mathematical processes. Finally, the HLT facilitates students to create their models from informal to formal and increases the interaction between students and teachers.

Abstract

Numerous studies, particularly in sphere material, have highlighted students' challenges in grasping the notion of geometry. Typically, the teacher only teaches the subject using the formula, omitting the notion altogether. Moreover, this study intends to create a hypothetical learning trajectory for the sphere material by incorporating the Syawalan tradition from Pekalongan into the learning process through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education approach, or PMRI. The methodology employed is design research, divided into three stages: preliminary design, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. As a result, this study focuses exclusively on the outcomes of the design experiment process, namely the pilot experiment. Video recordings, photographs, observations, deep interviews, documentation, field memos, and student activity sheets were all used to collect and analyze data to improve HLT. The outcome of this study is a hypothetical learning trajectory for sphere material in the context of the Syawalan tradition. The student learning sequence comprises four series, which include observing an interactive video of the syawalan tradition context to characterize sphere elements, utilizing orange fruit to find the sphere's surface area, discovering the sphere's volume through the cylinder and magic seeds, and resolving sphere-related contextual problems. Additionally, the activities devised in this study can potentially develop students' interest and conception of sphere material in the ninth grade. Abstract

This study aims to develop a learning trajectory by utilizing the local wisdom of the Megono Gunungan tradition to help students grasp the sphere's notion. This research applied the approach of the Indonesian Realistic Mathematical Approach (PMRI). Ninth-grade students at SMP 38 Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, were the subjects of this study. The methodology used is based on Graveimeijer and Cobb's three steps of design research: preliminary design, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. Numerous data collection methods were used, involving video, photography, the outcome of students' worksheets, and student interviews. The learning trajectory comprises four activities: identifying sphere components using the Megono Gunungan tradition interactive video context, discovering the sphere surfaces area using orange fruit, finding the sphere's volume through rice media, and solving problems of the sphere. This study's findings signify that the utilization of the Megono Gunungan tradition context could encourage learners to recognize the concept of the sphere through a sequence of designed activities.

Abstract

The concept of data distribution measures plays a pivotal role in statistical education, fostering students’ data literacy, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making. Despite its importance, many students continue to struggle with interpreting statistical data, demonstrating low levels of statistical reasoning and limited ability to apply these concepts to real-world contexts. Addressing this gap, this study introduces a culturally grounded and context-based instructional design that integrates the traditional Javanese calendar system, Pranata Mangsa, into the learning of data distribution measures. The objective of this research is to develop a learning trajectory that supports students’ conceptual understanding of data distribution through meaningful and realistic mathematical experiences. This study involved 32 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Central Java and employed a design research methodology encompassing three phases: preparation for the experiment, experimental design, and retrospective analysis. The instructional activities were implemented using the Video-assisted Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) approach. The resulting learning trajectory comprises three interconnected activities, namely analyzing Pranata Mangsa video content to gather and present data, deriving formulas for data distribution measures, and solving contextual problems linked to the cultural theme. The findings indicate that the integration of culturally relevant contexts and visual media in PMRI effectively enhances students’ comprehension of statistical concepts. This research contributes to the field by offering a novel approach that bridges ethnomathematical elements with formal statistical instruction and serves as a reference for future studies seeking to incorporate local wisdom into mathematics education.

Geometry plays a vital role in mathematics to foster students' cognitive growth. Nevertheless, grasping geometry concepts can be particularly difficult, especially when dealing with three-dimensional shapes with curved surfaces. This paper proposes a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) for teaching such shapes, grounded in Javanese Ethno-Realistic Mathematics Education (E-RME). The study adopts a design research methodology comprising three key phases: initial design, experimental teaching design, and retrospective analysis. The participants in this research are ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Semarang. The article focuses on the outcomes of the initial design phase, specifically the development of an HLT that includes four learning activities: (1) recognizing components of curved surface solids through contextual video observation, (2) exploring the surface area and volume of cylinders, (3) deriving formulas for the surface area and volume of cones, and (4) discovering the formulas for the surface area and volume of spheres. This sequence of activities is intended to help students build a meaningful understanding of curved 3D objects, while also fostering an appreciation for their cultural background and encouraging diverse approaches to mathematical reasoning. The HLT developed in this study is intended for implementation in trial classrooms and experimental teaching through E-RME, with the goal of enhancing students’ problem-solving skills, which is the novelty of this research.
