Abstract

In today's world, being skilled in English is crucial for effective communication. This project, conducted at the Puri Anak Bali Children’s home, focuses on improving English language skills in 11-14-year-old children. Given the challenges in traditional language education, the project aims to enhance vocabulary, pronunciation, and foster a positive attitude toward English learning. Through innovative methods like gamification, creative media, and interactive strategies across four sessions, significant improvements were observed in vocabulary knowledge, pronunciation skill, and learning attitude. The result shows the children indeed underwent significant improvement in vocabulary knowledge, pronunication skill, and learning attitude, thus producing a short Christmas video message for their sponsor. The success of this approach highlights the potential of integrating gamification and creative media for effective language education.

Abstract

Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Dhyana Pura yang memiliki fungsi dan peran melayani melalui pembelajaran, penelitian, dan pengabdian bagi sivitas akademika dan masyarakat umum telah melaksanakan kegiatan pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan memfokuskan pada keterampilan berbicara dan menulis dengan topik Giving Direction bagi siswa SMKS Puri Wisata Pancasari. Keterampilan ini dipilih untuk membantu siswa lebih percaya diri dalam mengekspresikan ide dan pikiran mereka dalam bahasa Inggris baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Topik Giving Direction dipilih sebagai tindak lanjut dari kebutuhan sekolah yang menginginkan anak didiknya mampu memberikan instruksi yang berkaitan dengan memberikan arah (Giving Direction) dalam percakapan sehari – hari. Dari pelatihan ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris ini dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami topik giving direction. Hal ini terlihat dari perbedaan nilai rata-rata siswa saat mengerjakan pre-test dan post-test. Dimana nilai rata-rata post-test lebih baik dibandingkan nilai rata-rata saat pre-test. Selain itu, siswa juga cukup mampu memberikan arahan sesuai dengan lembar kerja yang diberikan.

Abstract

This community partnership program aims to enhance the housekeeping skills of staff at Sandat Living Guest House in Canggu, Bali. The main challenge identified by the owner-manager was the lack of formal education and training in hospitality services, particularly housekeeping, among the staff, including the manager. To address this, the training focused on implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for room cleaning, improving knowledge of cleaning techniques, and ensuring the proper use of equipment and chemicals for both guest rooms and public areas. The training was conducted in three sessions, an initial analysis of existing housekeeping practices, followed by a practical implementation of the new SOPs, and an evaluation. The results demonstrated a significant improvement, with post-test scores showing an average increase of over 80%. This indicates a substantial gain in the staff's knowledge and practical skills. The program not only improved the quality of hospitality services at the guest house but also made a positive contribution to local tourism by enhancing the professional competence of the hospitality staff.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKajian yang berjudul “Teka-Teki Silang Sebagai Media Pengajaran Bahasa Ibu Berbasis Cerita Rakyat Sebagai sarana Pembentukan Karakter” ini mengungkapkan tentang kesadaran para pemangku pendidikan mengenai pentingnya pengajaran bahasa ibu berbasis cerita rakyat serta penerapannya melalui media permainan bahasa teka-teki silang sebagai sarana pembentukan karakter. Kajian ini berhasil mengungkap bahwa para pemangku pendidikan, baik anak, orang tua, dan pihak sekolah benar-benar memahami pentingnya penguasaan bahasa ibu semenjak dini. Namun dalam kenyataannya, hal tersebut masih sulit dilakukan karena faktor penggunaan bahasa ibu di dalam lingkungan keluarga, sekolah, maupun masyarakat masih relatif kurang. Anak-anak lebih cenderung menggunakan bahasa Indonesia maupun bahasa asing dalam percakapan sehari-hari sehingga penggunaan bahasa ibu semakin kehilangan popularitasnya. Kegiatan mendongeng, khususnya cerita-cerita rakyat yang berbahasa ibu juga sudah mulai ditinggalkan padahal, cerita rakyat tersebut sarat akan pesan moral dan amanat yang mengandung nilai-nilai karakter. Strategi permainan bahasa teka-teki silang dapat diterapkan sebagai media pembelajaran bahasa ibu melalui cerita rakyat dengan memilih kosakata dalam cerita rakyat yang mengandung nilai-nilai karakter. Sehingga, anak-anak dapat belajar dan menambah kosakata bahasa ibu yang nantinya akan berdampak pada pelestarian kebudayaan dan pemertahanan bahasa, serta tercapainya strategi penerapan pendidikan karakter melalui tahapan sosialisasi, internalisasi, pembiasaan, dan pembudayaan.Kata kunci : bahasa ibu, cerita rakyat, karakter, teka-teki silangABSTRACTThe extinction of language could happened when the number of story teller decrease. In Globalization era, the use of mother language slowly abandoned. Therefore, folklore or interesting games needed to intensify the child's interests in learning the mother language. Character education has become a trend in Indonesia’s education. This study has successfully revealed that educational stakeholders, both children, parents, and the school really understand the importance of mastering the mother language since the early stage. But in reality,it is difficult to apply due to the factors of mother language used in family environment, school, and society still relatively less. Children are more likely to use Indonesian or foreign languages in everyday conversations, so the use of mother language constantly losing its popularity. Storytelling activities, folklore, and especially stories that use the mother language also have begun to be abandoned. Though, the folklore is full of moral messages that contain character values. The strategy of using crossword puzzle game can be applied as a mother language learning media based on folklore by selecting vocabularies in folklore that contain character values. Thus, children can learn and add vocabularies of the mother language which will affect the preservation of culture and language defense, as well as the implementation of character education strategy through socialization, internalization, habituation, and culture.Keywords : mother language, folklore, character, crossword puzzle

Abstract

ABSTRACTVisual advertising in the form of video commercials is one of the most influential means of promotion,because its reach is very broad. Many product advertisers want to convey a message to their viewers tobe the center of attention, one of which is Wardah beauty products. A product that uses the "halal" labeland often includes religious elements such as Muslim models. Wardah cosmetic products try to conveya message to viewers about beauty through Wardah advertisement that women can have an impact andbenefit in all aspects of life ranging from the environment, social, to others, even the world. This articlediscusses the effects of visual advertising from the Wardah brand of cosmetic products on Indonesianwomen, particularly Generation Z women. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach by usingvisual analysis on the video advertising and interviewing targeted participants from five IndonesianGeneration Z women and then comparing, combining, conceptualizing and drawing conclusions fromthe interview results using SWOT analysis approach. The study found that Wardah “Beauty MovesYou” advertising campaign introduced new aspects of beauty for women that put forward the values ofprogressive, modern, modesty, courage, and usefulness—which are found to be favorable from theperspectives of the study’s Generation Z women participants.Keywords: visual advertising, beauty product, visual analysis, Generation Z, Indonesian womenABSTRAKIklan visual adalah bentuk promosi berbentuk video yang merupakan salah satu upaya pemasaran yangberpengaruh karena dapat menjangkau pangsa pasar yang luas. Artikel ini mengeksplorasi dampak iklanvisual produk kosmetik merek Wardah terhadap perempuan Indonesia, khususnya Generasi Z.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis visual dan teknik wawancaraterhadap lima perempuan Indonesia dari Generasi Z, kemudian membandingkan, mengkombinasikan,mengkonsep, dan menyimpulkan hasil wawancara tersebut dengan pendekatan analisis SWOT.Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa kampanye visual Wardah “Beauty Moves You” memperkenalkanaspek baru terkait kecantikan perempuan yang mengedepankan nilai progresif, modern,kesederhanaan, keberanian, dan kebermanfaatan—yang dinilai positif oleh perempuan generasi Z.Kata kunci: iklan visual, produk kecantikan, analisis visual, Generasi Z, perempuan Indonesia

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi penggunaan metafora konseptual dalam iklan pariwisata yang ditemukan dalam caption Instagram. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Lakoff dan Johnson untuk mengkategorikan jenis metafora pada masalah pertama, dan Kövecses: 2006 untuk menjelaskan metafora dan korespondensinya antara Source Domain (SD) dan Target Domain (TD). Penelitian ini menggunakan data kualitatif melalui analisis teks pada caption Instagram dari beberapa akun, yaitu Como Beach Club Canggu, Como Uma Canggu, W Bali Seminyak, dan Café Del Mar Bali. Metode penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan metafora dan korespondensi antara domain sumber dan target. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan 15 data yang dikumpulkan dari caption Instagram. Data dikumpulkan, dipilih dan diklasifikasikan berdasarkan tiga kategori metafora, yaitu metafora orientasi, metafora ontologis dan metafora struktural. Untuk mengetahui makna yang terkandung dalam ungkapan metaforis, data dianalisis untuk menemukan korespondensi SD dan TD.

Abstract

Skripsi ini meneliti mengenai kekayaan semantic dari lirik-lirik lagu Hillsong Worship dengan menggunakan sebuah kerangka kerja terpadu. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori John Lyons tentang makna kontekstual yang dikombinasikan dengan teori Geoffrey Leech tentang jenis makna untuk menghasilkan interpretasi bernuansa yang mempertimbangkan genre musik pujian dan kualitas khas Hillsong Worship. Penelitian ini melihat bagaimana Hillsong Worship menggunakan bahasa untuk mengidentifikasikan posisinya dalam kancah musik Kristen yang lebih besar, membangun rasa kebersamaan, dan terhubung secara emosional dengan pendengarnya, serta memberikan pengetahuan tentang iman. Hal ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kepustakaan. Analisis ini menunjukan bagaimana lirik yang tampaknya sederhana dapat memiliki beberapa tingkat makna yang berdampak pada pendengar secara kognitif, emosional, dan sosial. Empat lagu Hillsong Worship yang digunakan sebagai data memiliki setiap jenis makna yang diidentifikasikan oleh teori Leech: makna konseptual, konotatif, kolokatif, sosial, afektif, reflektif, dan tematik. Penulis lagu juga menggunakan beberapa istilah dengan makna tersirat dalam liriknya. Selain itu, terdapat tiga belas konteks subjeck, tiga konteks orang, tiga konteks tempat, lima konteks waktu, atu konteks formalitas, dan lima konteks suasana hati.

Abstract

This study examines translation techniques and equivalence strategies in the English translation of cultural content in Karisma Event Nusantara Magazine, a bilingual publication issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study. The data were taken from the 2023 edition of the magazine, which presented the content in both Indonesian and English. Data collection was conducted using a note-taking technique, with cultural terms selected through purposive sampling. The analysis employed Molina and Albir’s (2002) framework of translation techniques and Newmark’s (1988) theory of semantic and communicative equivalence. Results showed that 12 out of 18 translation techniques were identified, with adaptation, calque, description, established equivalent, and literal translation as the most frequent (4 data each). Other techniques include borrowing (3), generalization (2), modulation (3), amplification (1), linguistic compression (1), substitution (1), and transposition (3). For equivalence, 19 instances of semantic equivalence and 15 of communicative equivalence were found. These findings demonstrate the strategies used to preserve cultural meaning while ensuring clarity for international audiences.

Abstract

Translation of tourism texts is essential to bridge intercultural communication and ensure accurate transfer of cultural values to international audiences. This study investigated category shifts and equivalence strategies in the English translation of the Museum Gedong Arca brochure, a bilingual tourism text published by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Center of Bali. A descriptive qualitative method was applied through document analysis, with note-taking and documentation techniques used to collect data. The analysis was based on Catford’s (1965) framework of category shifts and Nida’s (1964, 1969) framework of translation equivalence. Results revealed 14 category shifts and 11 equivalence cases, with structure and unit shifts being most frequent, and formal equivalence slightly dominating. These findings highlight the importance of grammatical adaptation while maintaining fidelity, offering insights for improving translations of cultural heritage materials.

Abstract

The novel "Woman at Point Zero" is a novel that predominantly draws on psychological elements. The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) the relationship between theme and character through action, (2) the relationship between theme and character's thoughts, and (3) the relationship between theme and character's feelings. This study uses a qualitative approach. The method used is descriptive analysis. The data consists of linguistic units such as sentences, phrases, and paragraphs related to character's actions, thoughts, and feelings. The data source is the novel "Woman at Point Zero," published by the Obor Indonesia Foundation in 2006. The conclusion of this study is that the theme influenced by action determines humans as supreme beings, the theme influenced by dominant thoughts determines humans as social beings, and the theme's relationship with feelings determines humans as individual beings. This novel depicts the dark side faced by Egyptian women amidst Arab culture steeped in patriarchal values. Women still experience unequal rights and never receive the same rights as men. As in Arab societies, patriarchal culture is one of the foundations of debate over women's status in society, and it continues to generate conflict. The lack of guaranteed women's rights, political freedom, and the hierarchical constraints of husbands leave women disadvantaged in all aspects of life, experiencing discrimination, violence, and poverty.
