How Did al-Suyuti Abridge Ibn Taymiyya’s Nasihat Ahl al-Iman fi al-Radd ‘ala Mantiq al-Yunan? Ali, Mufti

Abstract

Al-Radd ‘ala ’l-Mantiqiyyin (an alternative title for Nasihat Ahl al-Iman) is a work composed by Ibn Taymiyya to demolish each principle of logic as well as to unravel the depravity of their foundation. Probably due to Ibn Taymiyya’s being genius, when he destroys those principles, he could not avoid himself to discuss digressively irrelevant topics dealing with theological as well as metaphysical issues. In a number of passages in al-Radd, he could not even hinder himself to make a good deal of repetitions. Therefore, al-Radd ‘ala’l-Mantiqiyyin is complex and difficult to use. The coherence of arguments that Ibn Taymiyya formulated is not solid and comprehensive. His criticism of logic is not penetrating as well. On the basis of my analysis of al-Suyuti’s method of abridgement of Ibn Taymiyya’s al-Radd, I argue that al-Suyuti succeeded in rendering Ibn Taymiyya’s sequence of ideas superior to that found in the original work of the latter. The result of this study confirms Hallaq’s argument that the overall result of al-Suyuti’s abridgement of Ibn Taymiyya’s al-Radd is ‘a more effective critique of logic than that originally formulated by Ibn Taymiyya

Abstract

Oposisi terhadap kalam dan Mutakallimun diklaim oleh sebagian besar peneliti sejarah teologi sebagai monopoli kaum Sunni (ahl al-sunna wa 'l-jama'a), terutama pengikut Ahmad b. Hanbal. Oposisi tersebut diklaim tidak pernah dilakukan oleh kelompok Shi'ah. Penelitian terhadap dua karya ulama Shi'ah abad ke-15, Ibn al-Wazir al-san'ani, memberikan antitesis (tentatif) yang bisa mengakhiri klaim akan monopoli tersebut. Penelitian terhadap isi, sumber, dan otoritas yang dirujuk Ibn al-Wazir dalam kedua karyanya tersebut membeberkan data baru bahwa kalam dan Mutakallimun mendapat cercaan dari sebagian anggota mazhab Shi'ah.

Abstract

This paper is written to answer two main questions (1) how many were there 'the fruits' of literate movement in Banten, especially as reflected in literature written in Roman scripts (2) whether the rise of 'those fruits' is corelated with the geographical dispersion and intensive growth of the number of the alumni of so called Dutch School? To deal with these two main questions, the present writer will discuss two sub-topics: first, the degree of literacy of Banten indigenous population, and secondly, a number of accessible literatures which were published in 1900-1942, fruits' of the competency of reading and writing of literate group of Bantenese population. Historical approach applied in this study necessitate the present writer to undertake the fallowing steps: (1) heuristical, gathering relevant historical sources and data, (2) data intetpretation, and (3) historiography or historical naration. The reconstruction of those two sub-topics are solely based on the availability of primary sources, collected from National Library and National Archives of Indonesian Republic (PERPUSNAS and ANRI), both in Jakarta. The conclusion which can be taken in this study is that (first), despite of the fact that Banten is recorded as one of residences in Java with the lowest degree of literacy among its population, the product of literacy of its people is quite rich and quality. Secondly, there was a corelation between the growth of the number of alumni of the dutch school and the degree of the productiviry in literate movement. Abstract

Program Pengenalan dan Penerapan Model Pembelajaran Wimba dengan Media Pembelajaran Play Dough di Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Kabupaten Tasikmalaya adalah untuk meningkatkan kualifikasi dan kapasitas pendidikan pengampu mata pelajaran IPA melalui peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam menerapkan model pembelajaran  dan penggunaan media pembelajaran yang kreatif dan inovatif. Target yang ditetapkan dalam kegiatan ini yaitu guru-guru IPA yang berada pada jenjang Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) di wilayah Kabupaten Tasikmalaya diharapkan memiliki pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam menerapkan model pembelajaran Wimba dengan media pembelajaran play dough dengan baik yang nantinya diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan visuospasial, dimana kemampuan visuospaisal ini bisa meningkatkan kecerdasan intelegensi guru maupun peserta didiknya. Selain itu mampu memberikan wawasan serta pengalaman pembelajaran yang menarik dan menyenangkan karena penerapan model pembelajaran Wimba dengan media pembelajaran play dough ini memberikan kreatifitas dan pengembangan ide terkait materi sel untuk guru maupun peserta didik.

Abstract

This study will discuss Zamachsyari Dhofier's work on the pesantren tradition. Discussion about the pesantrens, madrasas and schools, written by Zamachsyari Dhofier be very interesting, because it is told how the upheaval of Islam. In the course of history, the origins of schools can not be separated from the arrival and spread of Islam in Indonesia. Because discussion pesantrens have a great impact on the education model in Indonesia.And changes in the form and content of Islamic education in Indonesia can not be separated from the demands of the times that it faces. But the process of change is not an event that is smooth and seamless with no disagreement among those involved in it. Abstract

This research paper aims to explore Banten-Manila trade network by answering three following research questions: (1) how did the Banten sultanate establish its trade network to Manila; (2) how did Banten maintain its commercial connection to Manila?; (3) how was the banten-manila trade cut by the Dutch? The method which is applied in this research is historical method, which comprises four following steps: heuristic, critic, interperation and historiography. Historical sources which are made use of in this research are primary sources, mainly dagh register (VOC archives) and diaries of Catholic missionaries in Philipine. My study of primary sources consistently shows that Bantenese ships transported two important commodities; cloth and iron to Manila and brought home Spanish coins. Besides cloth and iron, Bantenese ships also transported pepper and other commodities to Manila; these included rice, Japanese copper, and sappan wood (caesalpina sappan). The most prosperous period in the history of the Sultante of Banten was during its trade relations with Manila, from 1663-1682. The trade relations had resulted in the Sultanate of Banten to send ships to many harbours; from Siam, to China, Gujarat, Pegu, Coromandel, Madraspatnam, Surat, Macao, Vietnam, Persia, Mocha and London.

Abstract

Sikap para ulama Islam terhadap kalam, logika, serta filsafat Yunani, yang secara umum mereka sebut sebagai 'ulum al-awa'il, terbagi ke dalam dua buah orientasi, yaitu orientasi Tradisional yang menekankan bahwa rasio Islam harus difokuskan kepada usaha memahami dan mengaplikasikan wahyu jauh dari kegiatan filsafat, dan orientasi Rasional yang menyatakan bahwa tradisi Yunani itu tidak bertentangan dengan doktrin Islam. Orientasi Tradisional tersebut belum diperhatikan secukupnya oleh para penulis modern. Lewat ulasan terhadap literatur-literatur modern karya I. Goldziher, G. Maksidi, G.H.A. Juynboll, J. Pavlin, dan P.Sj. van Koningsveld, yang secara eksplisit dan elaboratif memaparkan aliran, tokoh, pendapat, dan argumentasi kaum "oposan" tersebut, kajian ini mengungkapkan bahwa sikap mendukung atau menolak kalam dan logika bukan monopoli aliran keagaaan tertentu. Ulama yang dianggap sebagai wakil dari aliran Tradisional ekstrim sekalipun dapat menjadi pembela utama kalam dan logika dan memberi konstribusi yang sangat berarti bagi kemajuan dua ilmu itu, dan sebaliknya. Kajian ini juga mengungkapkan bahwa kelima penulis modern tersebut tidak merujuk buku Shawn AI-Manthiq Wa Al-Kalam Min Fannay Al-Manthiq Wa Al-Kalam karya Al Suyuthi, sebuah teks yang sangat kaya dalam tema ini.Kata Kunci: opposition, kalam, logic, modern literature.

Abstract

Al-Radd 'ala 'l-Mantiqiyyin adalah sebuah karya yang ditulis oleh Ibn Taymiyya untuk mendekonstruksi semua prinsip-prinsip logika Aristoteles. Karena barangkali kejeniusannya, ketika mendekonstruksi logika Aristoteles tersebut, Ibn Taymiyya sering tidak bisa menghindarkan diri untuk tidak mendiskusikan topik-­topik yang sebenarnya tidak relevan (digressive), seperti isu-isu teologis dan metafisika, dan tak jarang pembahasannya terhadap masalah-masalah tertentu berulang-ulang (repetitive). Karenanya Al-Radd 'ala 'l-Mantiqiyyin sulit dipahami dan koherensi argumen yang dibangunnya tidak solid dan komprehensif, sehingga kritik Ibn Taymiyya terhadap logika terasa tidak begitu tajam. Ditangan al-Suyuti­lah, kritik Ibn Taymiyya terhadap logika itu terasa to the point. Al-Radd dengan 138.000 kata diringkas dan diberi pengantar oleh al-Suyuti dalam karya (ringkasannya), Jahd al-Qariha fi Tajrid al Nasiha (mengeluarkan semua daya untuk ‘membersihkan’ Nasiha, viz. al-Radd) dengan hanya 32.000 kata. Upaya al- al-Suyuti tersebut berhasil dan karenanya diapresiasi oleh banyak orientalis, salah satunya, misalnya, oleh W.B. Hallaq, orientalis ternama bidang filsafat Islam.
