Abstract

Writing requires a complex skill, and thus students need to regulate themselves in employing the appropriate strategies to achieve good writing performance. The present research investigated Self-Regulated Writing (SRW) strategies used by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students. It contrasted the students' strategies related to the complex structure of the texts (i.e., paragraphs and essays) and students’ writing performance. The data information came from two separate sets of self-regulated learning strategy questionnaire, as well as writing outcomes of the students. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test were utilized to evaluate the data. The six dimensions of SRW strategies were extensively utilized in paragraph and essay writings. The six dimensions include motive, method, time, performance, physical environment, and social environment. Interestingly, the social environment dimension had the highest mean score, showing that the students needed assistance from their peers and available learning resources. Meanwhile, the motive dimension obtained the lowest mean in both paragraph and essay writings. Furthermore, the analysis showed no significant statistical difference in using SRW strategies in writing paragraphs and essays except in the method dimension. The difference in strategy use based on achievement was also not significant. The results indicate that the students applied similar SRW strategies in paragraph and essay writings regardless of their proficiency levels. Pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research are also further discussed in the article.

Bullying in Islamic Boarding School Environments: Prevention and Resilience Abstract Bullying can take various forms, such as physical, verbal, and psychological abuse that can harm students' health. This program included concrete actions to stop bullying, raise awareness of its effects, and improve students' mental resilience. There are two main activities that were carried out, namely bullying prevention assistance and bullying victim resilience. Prevention assistance was carried out by providing counseling to provide information about bullying, its effects, and how to prevent it. In addition, keynote speaker provided resilience assistance for bullying victims. To measure the effectiveness of this assistance activity, we took data in the form of pre- and post-assessments for students related to their understanding of bullying, its effects, and how to prevent it. The results of the pre-assessment of bullying behavior knowledge were 2.88, while the results of the post-assessment increased to 2.94. This shows an increase in students' understanding of bullying behavior, although not significant. Regarding the attitude of students towards bullying, there was also a change from 1.51 down to 1.49, indicating a change in attitude after participating in this activity. In addition, based on follow-up activities, it is known that students who experience bullying have better resilience, as evidenced by no longer committing self-harm. This mentoring activity is expected to be able to create a safe, inclusive Islamic boarding school environment that supports the holistic development of each student. Islamic boarding schools can function as a model to combat bullying and create a positive educational environment for the younger generation. Mentoring activities such as can be carried out periodically over a long period of time to provide a more significant impact.

Abstract

The increasing importance of cross-cultural competence in education has made international teaching practicum (ITP) programs essential for pre-service teachers. These programs provide unique opportunities to enhance pedagogical skills and develop global awareness, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in diverse cultural contexts. However, the specific experiences of Indonesian pre-service teachers participating in ITP programs remain underexplored. This study aims to explore the experiences of Indonesian pre-service English teachers during an ITP program in Malaysia, focusing on the journey, personal growth, and professional development achieved throughout the program. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, this exploratory case study examined the experiences of one Pre-service teacher from the English Education Department, referred to as "Budi," in a Malaysian pesantren. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, reflective journals, and program documentation, then analyzed thematically using Braun & Clarke (2006) framework. The findings reveal that the participant gained essential teaching skills, leadership qualities, and cross-cultural understanding while facing challenges such as time management, cultural adaptation, and limited teaching opportunities. These experiences contributed significantly to the participant’s personal and professional growth, highlighting the transformative impact of ITP programs. The study underscores the importance of ITP programs in preparing globally competent educators. By documenting the lived experiences of a pre-service teacher, the research provides valuable insights for program designers and policymakers seeking to enhance the effectiveness of international teaching initiatives.

Abstract

This study aims to know the level of motivation in speaking class and to investigate the significant relationship between students’ motivation and speaking achievement. The subject of this study was thirty-four students in the third semester of English Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Twenty-five statements of questionnaires inquiring about motivation levels and speaking achievement were used as the primary data sources. Motivation type was divided into 2, instrumental and integrative motivation, and the data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative. Speaking achievements from the lecturer were divided into excellent, good, average, low, and very low. Pearson Correlation was used to describe the relationship between students’ motivation and achievement. The result showed that students' motivation level was high and had no significant relationship between students’ motivation and their achievement in speaking class, so motivation is not the only factor that can increase students' speaking achievement. This study illustrates that speaking lecturers need to find another factor to boost students' speaking achievement.
