Abstract

Psychology has been gaining a good reputation in science and society. Ithas contributed positively to the human life and progress. But as a growingscience, psychology has both external and internal problems. One of them isreflected in the dispute on the quantitative and qualitative paradigm used byits scientists. What psychology should do and which attitudes its scientistsshould have? It is important that its scientist starts by acknowledging his orher identity. Then, the next important thing is to rethink about the natureof psychology itself. How does psychology come into existence? How hasit been growing? What is its uniqueness? Psychologists themselves have toconsider seriously the scientific nature of their knowledge as well as theirscientific attitudes. Philosophy of science will help to clarify and explain thedisputed problem.

Abstract

This study aims to describe communication behavior of Indonesian junior high school teachers based on the construct of the Teacher Communication Behavior Questionnaire (TCBQ). It was conducted in response to the need to develop teacher communication measurement with a clear construct to improve the quality of teacher communication research in Indonesia. Culture plays an important role in affecting communication behavior. It is necessary to study whether TCBQ's constructs are also found in teacher communication in Indonesia. Teacher communication behavior is important for learning, especially for students in early adolescence. This research used qualitative descriptive. Eleven junior high school teachers participated in this study using naturalistic observation obtained through video recording in the classroom. The results showed that according to the TCBQ perspective, participants perform four types of communication behavior: (1) challenging; (2) encouraging-praise; (3) understanding-friendly; and (4) controlling.

Abstract

As affected by Covid-19 pandemic, most of children experienced online learning. This online learning could affect children school readiness when they entering school. They showed various problems, such as math, writing, emotion, attention and in following instructions. To assist these children, teachers need to assess their school readiness using NST, and their intellectual potential using CPM. As the assessment process often takes time, we developed an information system integrated in this assessment. This system enables the psychologists to reduce time in doing the assessment and teachers may get the result faster. Based on the assessment using NST and CPM, it was found that in general children are ready to enter the school.

Abstract

As one of the age groups vulnerable to depression, resilience is an essential aspect to consider among university students. Parenting styles are thought to play a role in the development of resilience; however, research findings on the relationship between these two variables remain inconsistent. In addition to parenting styles, religiosity has also been found to correlate with resilience. Religiosity is suspected to act as a mediator in the relationship between parenting styles and resilience. The role of religiosity as a mediator is important to examine, given that religiosity is a significant element in the lives of Indonesians. This study aims to investigate whether religiosity mediates the relationship between parenting styles and resilience. The instruments used in this study include the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) (α = 0.783 for the authoritarian parenting scale, α = 0.617 for the permissive parenting scale, and α = 0.830 for the authoritative parenting scale), the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS) (α = 0.888), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) (α = 0.920). A total of 412 university students in Indonesia participated in this study. Data analysis using GLM Mediation Analysis revealed that religiosity mediates the relationship between permissive parenting and resilience. Religiosity also mediates the relationship between authoritative parenting and resilience. A direct relationship between authoritative parenting and resilience was also identified. However, religiosity does not serve as a mediator in the relationship between authoritarian parenting and resilience. The implications of this study are discussed at the end of the article.

Abstract

The essence of education is communication between educators and students. Teaching as a school education practice has two aspects, namely informative in the framework of forming skills and formative in the context of forming the personality of students. This current study aims to reveal the formative aspects of teacher-student communication patterns in the context of learning subjects in class based on Lacan's Theory of the Four Discourses. The research participants consisted of teachers and students of grades IV and V as class units who were carrying out Social Sciences lessons in three elementary schools in Yogyakarta. Data were collected through audio recordings of teacher-student communication in class. Data were transcribed and analyzed by four researchers separately, the results were discussed to find emerging themes derived from Lacan's Theory of the Four Discourses. The results showed that three types of Lacanian discourse emerged in teacher-student communication in the three schools studied, namely Discourse of the Master, Discourse of the University, and Discourse of the Analyst. This research will be followed up with research on the types of Lacanian discourse that are applied in writing textbooks for subjects in elementary schools including but not limited to Social Sciences.
