Abstract

This article is a report of correlational research conducted to the second undergraduate English major in STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin. The objective of this research is to examine whether the students’ perception on the utilization of language laboratory in Speaking course correlate significantly with their speaking performances. The instruments used for collecting data are questionnaire and Speaking test. The result of this research shows that there is no significant correlation between them. The existence of students’ perception on the utilization of language laboratory in Speaking course does not influence and gives any valuable contribution to their speaking performances. There are extraneous and possible factors that may influence the result of this research. Finally, this research is expected to become the new perspective about language laboratory that can be utilized as interactive media or teaching aid in teaching Speaking course. Furthermore, exploring the extraneous factors that occur to students in this research is needed to be investigated widely.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui implementasi keterampilan mengadakan variasi pada Praktik Pengalaman Lapangan mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin. Subyek penelitian ini adalah lima orang mahasiswa yang melaksanakan praktik mengajar di SMAN 5 Banjarmasin, MAN 3 Banjarmasin, dan SMKN 1 Banjarmasin. Data penelitian digali dengan menggunakan lembar observasi yang memuat indikator keterampilan mengadakan variasi yang ditampilkan mahasiswa. Selain itu, catatan lapangan digunakan dalam merekam pengamatan untuk mendukung hasil yang belum tercantum pada lembar observasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kelima mahasiswa praktik menampilkan keterampilan mengadakan variasi pada aspek penggunaan variasi suara, gerak dan mimik, kesenyapan guru, variasi dalam penggunaan media pembelajaran visual, serta variasi dalam pola interaksi satu arah dari guru kepada peserta didik. Masih banyak terdapat keterampilan mengadakan variasi lain yang belum dilakukan. Diperlukan evaluasi bersama antara dosen pembimbing PPL, guru pamong di sekolah praktik, kepala sekolah dan mahasiswa praktik itu sendiri untuk merancang dan menerapkan proses pembelajaran yang optimal.

Abstract

This research aimed at reviewing the barriers in EFL online learning experienced by learners in some countries like Indonesia, Saudi Arabian, Algeria, Jordan, and Ecuador during online learning gained from the research articles. This research was described descriptively with qualitative approach. The data being investigated in this research were five research articles from different researchers in different countries where they conducted research about barriers of EFL online learning during Covid-10 outbreak viewed from learners’ experiences. The results of this research showed that those five countries faced similar barriers in EFL online learning during Covid-19 outbreak. They were technical matter (internet connectivity) and social matter (passive interaction among teachers and learners). The conclusion stated that possible infrastructure for supporting high speed access internet should be considered by the policymakers in each country providing both technical and economic support to access it easily. Thus, for those who have barriers related to social matter, it was important for EFL teachers to create a strategy that made the class interactive and interesting as well as motivated the EFL learners interested to learn. Internal motivation from the EFL learners and teachers themselves to accommodate online learning creatively was needed.

Abstract

The issue of ecological education in argumentative essay writing with critical thinking skills is interesting to discuss. This study aimed to enhance ecological education in the argumentative essay through critical thinking to the students. The approach and method used in this study are qualitative-descriptive. The subject of the research is the students of junior high schools near river and wetlands. The instrument used is a questionnaire; the data gotten from the questionnaire is coded manually and the analysis is content analysis. The study result shows that the learners enhanced with ecological education have an awareness of their environment and they get easier to write their argumentative essay because the issue is close to them. Their linguistic competence is trained because they are able to use the vocabulary well. The learners have a wide knowledge of what to write and discuss in their writing activities. What happens in their environment becomes the material to narrate and it is the main part of ecological education contribution in their argumentative essay writing.

Abstract

Keterampilan berpikir kritis menjadi salah satu keterampilan yang mutlak dimiliki oleh mahasiswa di jenjang perguruan tinggi. Keterampilan ini memberikan kontribusi dalam hal menuangkan ide-ide baru, mengkritisi ide-ide tersebut, serta memperluas informasi dan pengetahuan. Salah satu bentuk implementasi berpikir kritis pada tingkat perguruan tinggi adalah mahasiswa diberikan mata kuliah menulis (writing) sebagai salah satu mata kuliah keterampilan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keterampilan mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin angkatan 2019 dalam  mengaplikasikan berpikir kritis pada penulisan esai. Sebanyak 20 orang mahasiswa diberikan tugas untuk menuangkan ide-ide kritis pada esai yang ditulisnya. Data penelitian digali dengan melihat esai yang dihasilkan mahasiswa yang selanjutnya dinilai dengan mengadaptasi rubrik penilaian Illinois Critical Thinking Essay Test. Terdapat empat komponen berpikir kritis pada rubrik ini yang diadaptasi untuk menilai hasil esai mahasiswa yaitu komponen focus, supporting reasons, reasoning, dan organization. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa secara keseluruhan, keterampilan berpikir kritis mahasiswa dalam menulis esai pada keempat komponen tersebut masih sangat kurang. Hanya 2 dari 20 orang mahasiswa yang menampilkan keterampilan berpikir kritis pada esai yang ditulisnya di komponen focus dan supporting reasons, 4 orang mahasiswa menampilkan keterampilan berpikir kritis pada komponen reasoning, serta 1 orang mahasiswa menampilkan keterampilan berpikir kritis pada komponen organization. Mayoritas mahasiswa masih belum mampu mengimplementasikan berpikir kritis dalam menulis esai. Kurangnya referensi, informasi, dan wawasan mahasiswa dalam menggali serta mengeskplorasi ide esai yang ditulis perlu ditingkatkan sehingga dapat menghasilkan esai yang baik dan informatif.

Abstract

Background: Pronunciation plays an important role to create effective communication since incorrect pronunciation may lead to misunderstanding. The EFL teachers should be aware of this issue by identifying the appropriate methods for teaching pronunciation to EFL students, with expectations; students may correctly pronounce the English words that support comprehensible communication. This research aims at describing the tongue twisters method for practicing English pronunciation as well as the YouTube channel for sharing their pronunciation practices.Methodology: This research employed an observation sheet and pronunciation task through students’ tongue twisters video uploaded on the YouTube channel as the instruments. The observation sheet was applied to find out students’ activities of tongue twisters practice in five meetings and their difficulties during the practice. Meanwhile, students’ uploaded tongue twisters video on the YouTube channel was analyzed to get the result of their tongue twisters practice.Findings: The students were given 26 tongue twisters consisting of 24 English consonant sounds to pronounce four times for each of them. The result showed that tongue twisters for sounds /p/, /f/, /v/, /ð/, and /z/ were difficult enough for them due to the interference of their mother tongue that commonly missed on these sounds. Besides that, the highest percentage of students who got a score of 60-69 on their YouTube channel video indicates that they still need more practice.Conclusion: Having tongue twisters’ practice and uploading the practice video on YouTube channel create learning experiences for students. They need to allocate more time practicing the English pronunciation better intensively. Therefore, the teachers should create maximal lesson planning and preparation to make sure that each student gets the same opportunity to practice it.

Abstract

Public speaking was a crucial activity that involved the act of making a speech in front of audience. When the students were required to deliver their speech in front of others, they may face a more difficult situation. This frequently results in anxiety where people experience the fear of giving public speeches. This research aimed to investigate the level of EFL students’ public speaking anxiety (PSA) at STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin and how they used their individual efforts or strategy to reduce their PSA. This research was conducted with a mixed method design. There were 16 EFL students investigated using the Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCAS) questionnaire and interview after they passed a Public Speaking course during a semester. The results of this research revealed some important findings. First, most EFL students have a high level of PSA. Next, most of them feel that they are afraid of making mistakes when they were performing public speaking in class. The third, the main factor causing them to have PSA was the feeling that they were afraid of having negative evaluations from the teachers and their classmates after performing the public speaking activity. Finally, they usually practice with friends beyond the class as one of their individual efforts to reduce their PSA. The conclusion of this research showed that the majority of EFL students’ PSA at STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin was at a high level and working with friends was the most individual effort they usually made to reduce their PSA.

Abstract

This article is a report of Community Service Program aiming at giving understanding and learning experience to the second grade students at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin in using English for tourism. The object of this program is 30 students of Tourism major. One day training program is carried out in form of practicing directly, doing the demonstration, simulation, and role play in the group. Furthermore, there are four topics to discuss as the material of this program, such as: using some expressions, information, and communication in English under tourism aspect. Generally, this program is well done. The students show their enthusiasm and demonstrate the activity successfully. There are still mistakes they have done in using grammar and pronouncing some English words. However, they show their best efforts running with the material given. Besides that, the majority of them are unfamiliar with the specific terms used in English for tourism so that they need to be guided in understanding the meaning of it. At the end of this program, the students are expected to have a learning experience and have the mastery to communicate using foreign language in the future. It will become essential knowledge to challenge in the job market globally.Keywords: Training, English, and tourism ABSTRAKArtikel ini merupakan hasil dari kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman dan pengalaman belajar kepada siswa-siswi kelas XI Program Keahlian Usaha Perjalanan Wisata yang ada di SMKN 4 Banjarmasin dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris untuk pariwisata. Peserta kegiatan ini berjumlah 30 orang siswa. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dalam jangka waktu 1 hari dengan metode praktik secara langsung, demonstrasi, simulasi, dan bermain peran secara berkelompok. Sebanyak empat materi disajikan mengenai beberapa ungkapan, informasi, dan praktik komunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris yang umum dan lazim digunakan dalam bidang pariwisata. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini berjalan dengan baik. Siswa mampu mengikuti dan menampilkan demonstrasi secara langsung terkait materi yang diberikan. Walaupun masih terjadi banyak kesalahan dalam hal tata bahasa (grammar) dan pengucapan (pronunciation) Bahasa Inggris, siswa mampu menunjukkan usaha untuk memahami materi. Akan tetapi, mayoritas siswa masih belum familiar dengan kosakata-kosakata Bahasa Inggris tertentu dan spesifik berkaitan dengan kepariwisataan, sehingga perlu pendampingan untuk mengenal jenis kosakata-kosakata tersebut. Di akhir kegiatan, siswa diharapkan mendapatkan pengalaman belajar yang akan menjadi salah satu modal bagi mereka untuk ikut bersaing di dunia kerja yang secara global menuntut kecakapan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa asing.Kata Kunci: Pelatihan, Bahasa Inggris, pariwisata

Abstract

AbstractThis research aims at knowing what kinds of efforts have been carried out by EFL teachers to foster undergraduate students in some universities in Banjarmasin. Besides that, this research also wants to know the advantages, the obstacles, and the challenges faced by EFL teachers in Banjarmasin fostering undergraduate students’ digital skills. This research takes place toward 15 EFL teachers in some universities in Banjarmasin who are selected as the participants to deliver information through questionnaire and interview section. The questionnaire item consists of six elements of digital skills and its practice that are expected to be employed by EFL teachers in their classes while interview guide gains the additional information further on clarifying the advantages, the obstacles, and the challenges they face on fostering students’ digital skills. The result of questionnaire shows that during a semester, the frequency of exploring digital-based learning is 65% from the whole meeting course duration at the average for all the EFL teachers under this research. Furthermore, the result of interview section shows that fostering students’ digital skills are not always successful in particular situation due to significant factors. Since the implementation of digital learning activities relies much on the availability of internet connection, the quality of internet network, the cost, and the degree of students’ familiarity with the range of digital tools become the essential things to consider. This research concludes that fostering student’ digital skills in EFL class needs optimal preparation, sufficient facilities available, and teaching plan from the teacher to get maximal learning outcomes.
