Abstract

This research focuses on the relationship between cognitive reading and reading comprehension ability of class XI students of SMAN 1 Kampar Kiri Tengah. This research was motivated by the fact that some students still have difficulty in understanding English texts even though they have used certain reading strategies. The method used was quantitative method with correlational approach. The total population in this research was 49 students, with the research sample consisting of 30 students from class XI.6 and 19 students from class XI.5. The instruments used were Cognitive Reading Questionnaire and reading comprehension test. Data analysis was conducted by Pearson Product Moment test using SPSS version 2023. The results showed that there was no correlation between cognitive reading and students' reading comprehension ability. This is indicated by the significance value of 0.710 which is greater than 0.05, so Ha is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between the two variables. It is expected that teachers and schools can develop more effective reading learning methods to improve students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a digital learning medium in the form of an interactive e-book using Book Creator to enhance students’ understanding of narrative texts in English reading skills. The study was conducted at SMP Tuah Negeri Pekanbaru and employed the ADDIE development model, which includes five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The e-book was designed based on curriculum indicators and equipped with multimedia features such as audio narration, videos, illustrations, and interactive quizzes to support student engagement and comprehension. Validation was conducted by content and media experts, yielding a feasibility score of 92%, categorized as "very feasible." The e-book was tested on 26 eighth-grade students using pre-test and post-test instruments to measure its effectiveness. Results indicated a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension, with 65.4% achieving a high N-Gain score. Students demonstrated better understanding of narrative structures, main ideas, and moral values. Additionally, the e-book increased motivation, facilitated independent learning, and enabled flexible access across devices. Teachers reported positive shifts in classroom dynamics, moving towards a more interactive and student-centered learning environment. The findings support the effectiveness of e-books as instructional media in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. It also highlights the potential of localized digital content to enhance learning outcomes in regions with limited access to conventional resources. This study concludes that Book Creator-based e-books can serve as a valuable tool in fostering students’ reading comprehension through engaging, contextually relevant, and accessible digital media.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the English pronunciation skills of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 10 Tapung by utilizing the Busuu application. The research specifically focuses on addressing pronunciation difficulties faced by students, particularly in terms of sounds, stress, intonation, and constructive feedback, through the use of digital media. The research used a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental group using the Busuu application and a control group receiving conventional teaching methods. The study involved 60 students from two classes at SMP Negeri 10 Tapung. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, which assessed students' pronunciation abilities. The experimental group received treatment via the Busuu app, which offers interactive features such as native speaker audio and pronunciation feedback. Statistical analyses, including normality testing, homogeneity testing, and hypothesis testing (paired sample t-test), were performed to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The study found a significant improvement in the experimental group’s pronunciation skills. The average score of the experimental group increased from 47.7 in the pre-test to 80.2 in the post-test, marking a 32.5-point increase. In comparison, the control group’s score increased from 45.9 to 74.3, a 28.4-point increase. Statistical analysis confirmed the significant effect of the Busuu application on students' pronunciation (p-value = 0.000), supporting the hypothesis that the application enhances pronunciation abilities more effectively than conventional methods. The findings suggest that the Busuu application is an effective tool for improving English pronunciation skills, highlighting the potential of digital media in language learning. The study encourages the integration of interactive and technological solutions in teaching, particularly for overcoming challenges in pronunciation and providing immediate, constructive feedback. However, limitations of the study include the small sample size and the potential influence of external factors not controlled during the experiment. Future research could explore long-term impacts and compare different digital tools for language learning. Additionally, expanding the sample size could provide more generalized results.
