Abstract

Seiza ni Naretara is a soundtrack from the anime Bocchi The Rock!. The song tells the story of the desire to become a constellation. Although soundtracks are typically tailored to the storyline of the film, interestingly, the story of Bocchi The Rock!! does not involve stars or constellations. This peculiarity sparked the author's interest in exploring the deeper meaning behind the song. To analyze it, Riffaterre's semiotics of poetry theory was used. Through heuristic and hermeneutic readings, as well as an intertextual study, the findings reveal that the song conveys a sense of self-discrepancy.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the stereotypes of Japanese women in the Meiji era as represented in the film Tsuda Umeko: Osatsu ni Natta Ryuugakusei. The movie tells the story of Umeko’s struggle against patriarchal culture and fighting for women’s rights in Japan. This research uses a qualitative method with Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The object of study is the movie Tsuda Umeko: Osatsu ni Natta Ryuugakusei, with data collection conducted through listening and note-taking techniques. The analysis is based on three main concepts in Barthes’ semiotics: denotation, connotation, and myth. Through the analysis, three strong stereotypes of Japanese women in the Meiji era were found, namely: 1) women are subordinate; 2) women are dependent on men; and 3) women are given limited access to education. From these three constructions of women’s stereotypes, it can be concluded that this movie reflects the patriarchy that was deeply rooted in the Meiji era. Therefore, it is necessary to change the mindset of society so that women are no longer positioned as subordinate parties but are given the space to develop and be equal to men, both in the domestic and public spheres.

Abstract

This paper is the result of a qualitative descriptive type of literature study. The purpose of this study was to describe what changes Shibuichi Setsuko made in the Chuumon no Ooi Ryouri Ten anime as an adaptation work from Miyazawa Kenji's children's short story with the same title. In addition, it also describes what pedagogical values are contained in this adaptation work. The method used is a comparative method to compare the anime version of the Chuumon no Ooi Ryouri Ten narrative with the short story intrinsic element. Meanwhile, based on the four main points of teaching Seikatsuka or life environment studies that applied in Japanese elementary schools, pedagogical values of this anime can be reveal. As a result of the analysis of Shibuichi Setsuko's creative adaptation, four changes were found in the anime version. The four changes lie in the number of characters, characterizations, plot stages, and location setting. Whereas as a result of the analysis of pedagogical values, it is known that this anime fulfills the four main points of the Seikatsuka. This is parallel with Altman's assumption about children's films which suggest that children's film viewers are expected to get teaching, morality, and understanding of identity as a pedagogical experience to improve the quality of life from what they watch. Keywords: adaptation, anime, children's short stories, pedagogical values

Abstract

Objectification of women can be found in various media, including in literature, both classical and popular works. Therefore, this paper examines the objectification female characters experienced and their resistance to patriarchal culture in the anime Haikara-san ga Tooru Movie 1: Benio, Hana no 17-sai, which received the first Kodansha Manga Award. This study uses a feminist literary criticism approach that focuses on radical-liberal feminism. Data in conversations, actions, and events representing women's objectification and resistance to this treatment were collected using a note-taking technique. As a result, three treatments of objectification of women were found: arranged marriages, demands on women to be skilled in domestic tasks, and demeaning women. Meanwhile, women resist that objectification acts by rejecting arranged marriages, fighting against the demeaning of women, and working in the public sphere. From these findings, it is concluded that the objectification of women is constructed, consumed, and reproduced by men and women. Women, like men, should be treated as human beings with their rights, not as objects that can be traded, owned, or demeaned.
