Abstract

Abstract

This research is focused on exploring the relevance of undagi’s indigenous knowledge implemented on post-pandemic interior design as a recommendation for preserving traditional Balinese architecture in the modern era. As UNESCO promoted safeguarding the "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2003, all designers must strengthen the cultural side in still relevant designs for the modern era. In Bali, undagi’s (traditional architect) existence declined in the modern era. Undagi’s indigenous knowledge is the basis for the architectural development of traditional Balinese houses (umah) for designing tourism facilities as research objects. This research is a desk study with a critical analytical approach that qualitatively conducts a comparative study between indigenous knowledge and post-pandemic interior design recommendations with two stages of research—in the first stage, critically analyzing post-pandemic interior design recommendations by previous researchers with a systemic literature review. In the second stage, exploring undagi’s indigenous knowledge consists of explicit and tacit knowledge. The result of the two stages is the formulation of the relevance of undagi’s indigenous knowledge in post-pandemic interior design in Bali. The study results show that the undagi’s indigenous knowledge has relevance, which aligns with the recommendations for post-pandemic interior design criteria by previous researchers. This relevance is closely relevant, and several relevant values require development and interpretation to have interconnectivity between modern and traditional values. This process of interconnectivity must prioritize the principle of preserving traditional Balinese architecture in the modern era.

Abstract

This article delves into the integration of retro fashion trends in chair design within Surabaya's café scene. Employing a descriptive qualitative research approach, this study seeks a profound comprehension of the impact of retro fashion trends on chair design. Data collection methods encompass theory development, observations, interviews, and questionnaire surveys. The analysis is rooted in predefined outcome variables. The study's findings underscore the substantial influence of the retro fashion trend on café chair design in Surabaya. Notably, Generation Z's consumer demand, characterized by heightened consumerism and a penchant for contemporary trends, plays a pivotal role in shaping fashion cycles and lifestyle choices. The enduring appeal of the retro trend, spanning from the 1970s to the present, resonates strongly with Generation Z, especially those who harbor nostalgic inclinations. Furthermore, the adaptation of retro fashion trends remains pertinent as a significant segment of the population still gravitates toward styles from the 1970s to the 1990s. This research reveals that Surabaya's café chair designs adeptly incorporate retro elements, encompassing material selection, silhouettes, colors, and styles. By seamlessly amalgamating these retro elements with contemporary influences, these chair designs effectively captivate consumers, fostering an inviting and appealing ambiance within the café environment.

Abstract

This article uses the appropriate technology paradigm in design activities as problem finding and internal potential tracking as the basis for design solutions. Appropriate technology is based on the real needs of the community, not on technological developments. This activity emphasizes how to provide a solution to a problem in community by bridging it to the appropriate technology. Its application is contextual according to the local conditions of the community. This principle is still relevant in relation to today's issues which view community diversity as an internal potential in dealing with broader problems. One of these can be seen from the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which view development based on local conditions and culture as motivation. The contextuality of problems in the community and how to approach them underlies the general framework of this article by noting that sharing knowledge with the community is a way to understand their internal potential. This article attempts to offer the fit design term based on the appropriate technology paradigm by trying to define the key concepts of the term. This article uses the systematic literature review (SLR) method with related articles on appropriate technology practices from the ScienceDirect and MDPI databases. The concept is built based on the understanding that specific problems in the community are contextual in nature, oriented to local management, and optimize the diversity of the community and environmental potentials. Thus, the notion of appropriateness in this article is not interpreted narrowly in the context of tools, but rather leads to appropriateness. The key concept offered is that the design must be appropriate to the situation, related to certain circumstances, compatible, acceptable, and strengthening the community, and must be in accordance with the required objectives.

Abstract

This paper discusses the formal and symbolic aesthetic meaning of the Al Jabbar Grand Mosque, a new mosque in Bandung, Indonesia, designed by Ridwan Kamil. Like Ridwan Kamil's previous works, the Al Jabbar mosque in Bandung has a contemporary design. The general concept of the architect in designing this mosque has been published in the mass media, and the public already knows the design idea of the mosque. However, there are still features within the mosque that need to be described and analyzed so that the general public can understand the architect's intention. This paper proposes answers through interpretation methods with a descriptive analysis approach to understand the symbolic meaning of the new features of the mosque. The symbolic aesthetic used in the analysis uses symbolic aesthetics from the culture of the Sundanese people, one of the ethnic groups in Indonesia, which is geographically the cultural background where the mosque was built. The analysis found that the meaning the mosque forms, apart from having a bond of meaning with the mosque, also has a bond of meaning with the local culture. The architect made it differently with the spirit of novelty to enrich Islamic architecture and design treasures.
