Abstract

Climate change is the current global issue that has been discuss over two decades. In Indonesia context, the total greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from all sectors including land use change forestry, energy, peat fire, waste, agriculture and industry is 1.377.982,95 Gg CO2e. The GHG emission only counted by three main gases such as CO2, CH4 and N2O. Related to mitigation efforts by private company to reduce these emissions. This study more focus on comparation on how much natural forest can generate CO2 absorpsion from tree growth and how much plantation plantation company generate CO2 absorpsion from tree growth and their emission from its operational activities specially on transportation and N addition by synthentic fertilizer. The study conducted in specific block of forest management unit of Tasik Besar Serkap, Riau Province since January 2016 until June 2016. Based on this study, CO2 absorpsionfrom natural forest is  33.199.866,70 ton CO2, CO2 emissionfrom natural forest is 0, CO2 absorpsion from plantation company 13.366.266,32 ton CO2, CO2 emissionfrom synthetic fertilizer is 66.558.58 ton CO2, and CO2 emissionfrom transportation for operationalization of plantation company is 16.688,24 ton CO2.   Keyword: GHG emission, CO2 absorpsion, plantation Company, transportation, synthetic fertilizer

Abstract

Industrial activities are sources of air pollution. Pollutants dispersion in air influenced by meteorological condition, such as wind speed, wind direction, air temperarture, air turbulence and atmospheric stability. Air quality monitoring is important in controling the worst condition of pollutants concentration. Air quality monitoring is not easy to do, because it is time consuming, costly and need technology, so that air quality model is developed as an alternative air quality monitoring. This research used gaussian model, a model for predicting pollutant concentrations in downwind area. This model is applied in cement industry, focusing on major pollutants of the cement industry. Sources of pollutants consist of dust, SO2 and NOx. The modeling results showed maximum ground level concentration of dust, SO2 and NOx occur at night (7-10 PM). The maximum ground level concentration of dust, SO2 and NOx at night respectively were 13.16 μg / Nm3, 32.69 μg / Nm3, 100.21 μg / Nm3 (N1 stack) and 14.65 μg / Nm3, 36.65 μg / Nm3, 128.10 μg / Nm3 (N2 stack) based from downwind scenarios at night when atmospheric condition was stable. The distance where the maximum ground level concentration occured has a strong correlation with wind speed (-0.82 ≤ r ≤ -1). Based on gaussian model output, air quality monitoring should be executed at night time (stable atmospheric condition) and located at ground level where maximum concentration occured. Increasing 50m of stack can decrease 57% pollutant concentrations in stable condition.

Abstract

Setu Subdistrict, Bekasi Regency is an area designated as urban forest development for providers of cultural environmental services. The purpose is to identify the community's perceptions, motivations, and preferences around the urban forest. Primary data collection by questionnaire to 31 people was determined purposively and analyzed quantitatively using a 4-point Likert Scale. Calculation of air temperature and humidity, thermal comfort, biomass with allometric methods, and CO2 absorption to support recommendations for attractions. The results show that community knowledge, benefits, and functions of urban forests are well known. People visit urban forests because they provide comfort and good air quality so that they are physically and mentally healthy. Community preferences are in the form of harvesting honey and developing urban forests together so that they can participate further. The potential of the urban forest in cultural environmental services can be developed through the provision of massive information and counseling, the development of tourist attractions in the form of forest healing, educational, and culinary tourism, also panoramic and landscape attractions. With the relative humidity of 60% and the thermal comfort of 25.2 oC, categorized as quite comfortable, the development of health therapy tourism can be considered.

Abstract

The expansion of oil palm plantations has become of global concern. Jambi province in Indonesia is one of the regions experiencing a rapid shift in land use, and oil palm plantation, settlement, and agriculture has emerged as the primary force behind this shift. This study aims to project scenarios of future land-use change and expansion of oil palm plantation in Jambi Province in 2030, 2060, and 2100. Projections of land-use change scenarios are conducted using the Land Change Modeler (LCM) in which Cellular Automata Markov (CA-Markov) is the model base. The validation of model against historic land-use changes showed an overall kappa value of 0.97. In the no-conservation scenario assuming a continuation of the trends from 1990 to 2011, the forest area is continuing to decrease. . Oil palm would replace forest as dominant land-use cover in Jambi Province in 2100. Driving factors explaining the spatial distribution of oil palm plantation expansion include distance from forest, distance from road, and elevation. Our study shows the importance of government regulations to to slow or stop deforestation especially for forests near plantations.
