Abstract

Sastra wangi or fragrant literature is a call to the literary works composed by female writers. It explores about the life of female characters, and questions about the settled constellation between man and woman in life. The works reflect the woman worldview, especially Indonesian woman, about the realities in the society, particularly on the unfair patriarchal structure positioning the woman in a subordinate level, including in the issue of sexuality. By employing many vulgar words, the works are regarded as a way taken by the writers to protest the unfair world. This article tries to give a glance about the literary phenomenon in Indonesia by relying on the media sources as the first hand catching the actual things. It also sees the genre from some perspectives: feminism, capitalism, and the literary theory.

Abstract

Contrastive analysis in this article is applied on translation involving three different languages, i.e. Indonesian and Javanese (Eastern languages) and English (Western language). Analysis on the data results in the fact that Western has more complete realization of experienced entity, as proved in the complete pronoun for all (first, second, third and also human or non-human). The Eastern doesn’t realize the perceived existence in a complete pronoun. Bahasa is lack of third person for non-human, and Javanese has no practical third person either for human or non-human, as found in the translation data. Eastern is concerned more on the realization of different social and interpersonal relation between speaker, interlocutor and the third person mentioned in the interaction. Thus, Eastern is rich with variation in addressing another among of which is formulated in the H and S for “I”, “you” and “he”.

Abstract

Young female writers shocked the literary field of Indonesia by publishing their works in their way: light, unburdened, and fresh. Their language choice is easily understandable: the novels were written in colloquial style. The books were sold well. It did refresh our literary world. The teenagers, at least, have more alternatives to read something composed by their peers. Through their pens, our teens share their views on reality in their very style.                        One of outstanding concepts evoked in their writing is the formulation of “ beauty”. This paper took four novels, My Friends-My Dream, Ramalan Fudus Ororpus, Kana di Negeri Kiwi, dan Summer Triangle, to discover the teen’s perspective concerning beauty. The concept is internalized in their mind through the discourses developed in their social background and through the media. They select those discourses, and take one they believe in it.                    They analysis shows that their concept of beauty is not so different from the general one or patriarchal beauty. However, they insist that being beauty does not necessarily mean to be happy, as it was obviously declared in Kana di Negeri Kiwi. The beauty is : tall, white, black and straight hair, and well-shaped  body. This is just a result of the dominance of patriarchy, standing in the same position of capitalism to whom the main stream media are belonged. The media holder is the only one dictating what’s to be “ beauty.”
