Abstract

The discourse analysis may seem quaint to discuss. One of the common domains of analyzing the critical discourse covers the public speech by which the speaker is trying to gain best response from the listener or audience. This article attempts at exploring the use of subjects in Donald Trump's Inauguration Speech. Subjects are mainly examined from a critical discourse analysis approach concerning on speech functions. The transcript of the speech is analyzed to describe personal pronouns used by Donald Trump in his inauguration speech. The result shows that by using pronouns, Donald Trump tries to represent himself and others indicating that the pronouns that he used is one of the devices to maintain a good interaction with the audience through the speech

Abstract

  Social media nowadays has been inevitably used by people in the world. It plays significant roles for human’s society including as the way of marketing and trading of products. The aim of this study was mainly to explore the prospects of using social media in driving and developing women’s entrepreneurship, its challenges and strategies. This present study anchored in a qualitative research. Data were garnered through semi-structured interviews to Indonesian women living in Kudus, Central Java, Indonesia running their online entrepreneurship as the additional job not the main ones. The results of the study revealed that the prospects of using social media cover it is beneficial for women’s entrepreneurship in improving sales and pursuing the innovation in their online business, it offers others to be reseller in a number of products and it allows the women to develop their online entrepreneurship. However, there are a number of challenges of using social media in online entrepreneurship including the emergence of negative comments and complaints about the products from costumers that will lead to decrease the reputation of business, poor connection of internet which may hinder a better business management, and the lack of knowledge about social media and team that can hinder these women entrepreneurs to handle their customers’ inquiries. Some strategies that need to be taken into account in online women’s entrepreneurship cover women entrepreneurs are supposed to upload new and up-to-date products, give best services to customers, collaborate with Shopee application (online shopping platform) in which they will get less risk in online business through its system and increase their innovation through online business class and trainings. The findings of the study offer an implication to the need of being innovative through the use of technology and social media in running online entrepreneurship particularly for women entrepreneurs since its flexibility and benefits as one of the ways to get additional income.

Abstract

Karakter kemandirian perlu ditanamkan kepada anak sejak dini terlebih pada anak disabilitas grahita yang memiliki keterbatasan. Hal ini dimaksudkan agar mereka dapat bersikap mandiri dalam melangsungkan kehidupan di masa mendatang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) Mengetahui pelaksanaan pembelajaran tematik kelas IV di SDLB Kaliwungu Kudus.2) Mengetahui pembentukan karakter kemandirian pada anak disabilitas grahita melalui pembelajaran tematik.3) Mengetahui faktor pendukung dan penghambat dalam pembentukan karakter kemandirian anak disabilitas grahita Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian lapangan (field research) dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: 1) Pelaksanaan pembelajaran tematik kelas IV di SDLB Kaliwungu Kudus berjalan dengan baik. 2) Upaya yang dilakukan oleh guru dalam membentuk karakter kemandirian anak disabilitas grahita kelas IV di SDLB Kaliwungu Kudus melalui pembelajaran tematik yaitu dengan menerapkan strategi dan metode yang bervariatif, menggunakan media yang inovatif, bahan ajar yang sesuai tingkat perkembangan anak. Dari upaya tersebut, empat aspek kemandirian yakni aspek intelektual, ekonomi, sosial, dan emosi peserta didik disabilitas grahita telah terbentuk. Pembentukan aspek kemandirian anak disabilitas grahita ini sudah sesuai dengan nilai-nilai keislaman. Hal ini terlihat ketika terjalinnya komunikasi yang baik antara guru dan peserta didik serta penerapan kebiasaan baik dari sekolah dan orangtua 3) Faktor pendukung meliputi semangat dan percaya diri peserta didik yang tinggi, peran guru, lingkungan sekitar. Adapun faktor penghambatnya meliputi IQ peserta didik disabilitas grahita terbatas, kelas dan jumlah guru yang tidak ideal.

Abstract

Academic writing has played a significant role for academicians including EFL students in academic context. Indeed, it needs study and practice to upgrade this skill since academic writing is not really easy particularly for novice writers. This paper reports the importance of engaging EFL students in English phrases of academic writing to help them improve their academic works. Further, this study reports the EFL students’ responses to the practice of English academic phrases. This study anchors in a qualitative research. Data were garnered through in-depth interviews to ten students of English Department at Institut Agama Islam Negeri Kudus. Besides, a documentation was conducted to enhance their academic writing works. The results revealed that engaging EFL students in English phrases of academic writing has been beneficial for introducing work, referring to literature, describing methods, reporting results, discussing findings, and writing conclusions. Further, they become more familiar with a number of English phrases used in academic writing. Importantly, they become more encouraged to write academic papers and improve their publication.

Abstract

This study aims at exploring the phenomenon of Javanese language shift among lecturers and staffs at IAIN Kudus and their possible motives. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach and the data were taken from the interview, observation and focus group discussion. The results indicate that the use of Indonesian of male lecturers and male staffs is less striking shift than female ones. Indeed, female lecturers and female staffs tend to have a strong preference for using Indonesian rather than Javanese. This could be caused by the effect of globalization, the increased use of other languages, social changes, mobility, and modernity. The motives of language shift among the female lecturers and female staffs are the language used in a formal education is Indonesian and the increase of technology particularly in relation to social media use Indonesian as a medium to deliver information.

Abstract

The increased conflicts and online propaganda on social media recently have raised the negative impacts on the society such as violence and conflicts. This article mainly reviews the hate speech in Indonesian social media content viewed from the gender and discourse perspectives. Further, it explores the importance of using the language of peace on social media such as you tube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and so on as an effort to prevent the potential for conflicts. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to describe the phenomenon of the use of hate speech and propaganda in social media. The writer collected data from a number of quotes and writing on social media particularly Facebook and Instagram containing hate speech, threats, propaganda, and incitement leading to negative reactions of the society. The result shows that women may have more preference dealing with physical appearance issues to political ones. This can be seen clearly through the comments stated by women in social media particularly Facebook. Meanwhile, men tend to have preferences on commenting political issues in social media to physical appearance. Furthermore, they dare to take a risk and power in relation with political issues. Thus, the users of social media both men and women are encouraged to be wise in using social media that can be achieved by using the language of peace to prevent the potential for online conflicts among the society.

Abstract

This study aims at describing the use of quantum learning model with Islamic character values to improve students’ achievement at elementary school. It used a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interview and documentation. The result indicates that quantum learning model with Islamic character values is beneficial for students during the teaching and learning process. These cover students feel more active in the learning process, students have more attention on teachers’ explanations, students have better academic achievement which is shown by the average score among students passing the minimal criteria standard and learning processes and students are able to internalize the Islamic values during teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The study aims at determining the effect of the implementation of the quantum learning model assisted by Islamic-character learning media on the responsibilities and learning outcomes of the fifth graders at Prampelan Elementary School. This research used is pre-experimental design. The results showed that there was an effect of learning responsibilities on the implementation of the quantum learning model assisted by Islamic character learning media influencing student learning outcomes, 51.8%.  Meanwhile, the remaining of learning outcomes, 48.2% of student learning outcomes could be explained by other variables outside this study. Based on the classical completeness test that students in Grade VA at SDN Prampelan with a quantum learning model assisted by Islamic learning media with a value of ≥ 65 has reached 75%

Abstract

The present study aims to explore a dozen barriers of teaching English in Indonesian secondary Schools amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The qualitative study documents the teaching experiences of English teachers at Indonesian Junior high schools. By employing a purposive sampling technique, the writer collected data through semi-structured interviews with three English teachers in Indonesian secondary Schools. The result of the study evidence that the barriers of teaching English encountered by them amidst the COVID-19 pandemic cover the difficulties of controlling learning activities among students, the difficulties of providing feedback of English materials because of the distance, the constraints of signal and quota, the difficulties of identifying the progress of students’ learning at once and the students’ boredom during joining online class, ineffective assessment of English materials through e-learning, lack of preparation among English teachers and students in using e-learning, the difficulties in meeting students’ need, lack of training, support and technical expertise. This study has offered an implication of promoting successful English learning by providing innovative teaching media for English teachers and the need of better engagement among students in joining English class amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The present study reports the implementation of e-learning in English language teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic at one of the private high schools in Indonesia viewed from teachers' and students' perspectives. Using a qualitative study, the data were garnered through semi-structured interviews with an English teacher, a principal who also teaches English, and students. The result reveals that both teachers and students have the same responses to e-learning practices. There were three stages in implementing e-learning: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In terms of preparation, the English teacher designed lesson plans as a guideline for learning. In the implementation stage, the English teacher used learning materials from various sources, including textbooks, videos, articles, and other sources on the internet. On the other hand, students reported that English teaching and learning activities in e-learning classes were usually carried out through WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and Zoom meetings. Apart from the advantages of e-learning in English language teaching, some challenges in its practice include the difficulties of operating technical devices for specific teachers, the problems of controlling students during distance learning, etc. Finally, the study's findings promote integrating technology and encouraging teachers' professional development in English language teaching.
