This study revealed several important findings. Firstly, group of students who receive CALLA Model is more effective in improving students’ communicative competence compared to control group who do not receive Strategies-Based Instruction. The statistical computation also shows that there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. Based on the result of this study, there were some suggestions made by the writer which are addressed to English teacher, students and future researchers. It is hoped that English teachers could not only know how to teach the language, but also know how to develop students’ learning strategies. Thus, learners are demanded to learn and use more learning strategies. The students may try or use any learning strategies which enable them to be better in speaking English.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract It is believed that the students’ low reading proficiency, as shown in their TOEIC scores, is due to their poor reading habit. One of the ways to overcome such a problem is by facilitating them with a lot of reading practices in an extensive reading program. Since today non-printed multimodal texts (NPMT) and Linear texts (LT) are available in the society, an experiment on which mode is most effective to enhance the students’ reading proficiency needs to be done. This study aims to investigate the effect of implementing non-printed multimodal text in an extensive reading program on the students’ reading comprehension. Two groups of students undertaking engineering major at a polytechnic in Surabaya, one group was exposed to NPMT and the other to LT in a one-semester extensive reading program, were chosen to be the subject of this quasi experimental study. A pretest and posttest on TOEIC were conducted to measure the students’ reading proficiency (only the reading scores of the test were analysed for the purpose of the study). The t-test analysis using SPPS for windows 23 shows that there is a significant difference in achievement between those who are exposed to NPMT and LT after the reading program ends (p-value = 0.010). The NPMT group gain better reading proficiency than that of the LT. It means the use of non-printed multimodal text in extensive reading can boost the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Many vocational schools have been bringing their educational practice closer to industry along with the concept of Teaching Factory (TEFA) to adjust the students’ skills as close as the industry demands. The implementation of TEFA based curriculum in one of vocational higher education in Surabaya for all subjects including English subject has been performed since 2019. In English classes, the Teaching Factory-Based Strategy covers two methods: product-based learning and flipped classroom. This research aims to explore the implementation of TEFA-based strategy and the two methods by revealing students' perceptions and responses on the strategy. This research is descriptive qualitative research in which data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The students observed were from 4 different study programs in this PPNS. The results of this study show positive perceptions of students toward TEFA – based strategy implemented in the classroom even though there are some obstacles faced by both students and lecturers. Hopefully this research can contribute practically to English teachers who are adopting TEFA in English language teaching.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivation of elementary school teachers participating in an online English language training program as part of a community service activity. The objective of this study was to offer practical suggestions for educators and aspiring researchers who are interested in understanding and enhancing learners' motivation in English language training. Conducted with 50 teachers from 18 schools in Surabaya and 2 schools in Jakarta, Indonesia, the research employed a descriptive method using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings highlight the importance of intrinsic, extrinsic, and avoidance motives in learners' participation. Stakeholders' demands and the intention to stay current with modern trends were identified as significant factors influencing motivation. The study emphasizes understanding learners' motivation to determine the success or failure of online English learning, noting that motivation serves as the driving force for acquiring a second language. The research also explores the impact of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) systems on learners' motivation, nothing their positive effects on interest, autonomy, and oral communication practice. The study aims to provide insights into the overall motivation of language learners, particularly in the context of CALL systems, to enhance language acquisition.
