Abstract

Evaluation of learning is a crucial step in understanding the progress of students' competence and determining the success of the learning process. This study aims to explain, with reference to the 2013 Curriculum, the experience of teachers conducting evaluations during online learning. This study focused on nine English teachers from nine public schools in Jambi City, including five junior high schools, two high schools, and two vocational high schools. This case study employed an interview instrument which data were then qualitatively analyzed. The findings of this study include teachers' comprehension of learning evaluation, forms of assessment, barriers in the learning process, and the effectiveness of implementing learning evaluation. First, teachers have a comprehensive understanding of learning evaluation, which includes students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes. However, teachers consider the number of student competencies that must be assessed in online learning to be burdensome, specifically due to limited hour of meeting. The teachers emphasize on delivering the material and decrease the number of competencies that students must acquire. Second, teachers assign daily tasks to assess students' knowledge, video projects to assess their skills, and pay attention to the punctuality of assignment submission and classroom interaction to assess students' attitudes. Third, the obstacles of learning include the absence of gadgets, limited of internet quotas, the difficulty of the internet access, the lack of student participation, and the absence of parental support for online learning. Fourth, the limited abilities of teachers, the difficult conditions of students, and the limited time contribute to the ineffectiveness of the online learning process. In conclusion,  the evaluation of online learning cannot completely reference the curriculum.

Abstract

Innovative learning can be interpreted as an innovation from conventional learning in terms of facilities, media, and methods. Using a student-oriented approach to innovative learning bas ed on the constructivism paradigm which sees that knowledge is built independently by students through the process of investigation and use of technology. Innovative learning can be realized through several methods such as problem solving (problem-based learning), investigation (discovery learning), research (inquiry learning), and group discussion (project-based learning). Responding to this, the Department of Language and Literature Education (PBS) under the auspices of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Jambi University is trying to implement case-based and project-based learning. However, in general there are differences between lecturers in translating these learning concepts technically in the classroom. This research focuses on lecturers' understanding related to case-based and project-based learning. The research data was taken using a focus group discussion instrument and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. Through the results of the study it was found that the lecturers have different understanding of the implementation of cased method in terms of the stages in learning, constraints, and learning outputs. Meanwhile, in relation to project-based learning, the lecturers understand its characteristics in terms of product-based, student-centered learning, and focus of the process.

This study also investigates the frequency of ICT use among EFL university students for both general and English learning purposes. A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used in this study. Two instruments were used to collect data they are, an online questionnaire and semi-structured interview. A total of 337 students participated in the online questionnaire. A Semi-structured interview was used to gather in-depth information to follow up on the questionnaire to 10 participants purposefully selected who answered the questionnaire with a set of criteria; participants agree to be interviewed; the participants’ mean score of survey result is >3. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, and the qualitative data were analyzed and coded thematically. The findings indicated that students spend more time using ICT for general objectives (e.g. social media and entertainment) than for English study. They did, however, demonstrate favorable attitudes regarding the utilization of ICT for English language learning. Furthermore, they intended the campus to provide adequate technological facilities and internet access in each classroom to assist the learning process. Students believe that ICT can assist them enhance their English language skills. As a result, teachers should incorporate more ICT into their English language instruction.

Abstract

The increasing number of international students in Indonesia's higher education sector urges institutions to improve the quality of their services, facilities, and education. The teaching and learning environment is critical, encompassing the effectiveness of instructional methods, classroom interactions, and the academic support systems provided by the university. Additionally, their socio-experiences, including integration into the campus community and interactions with peers, play a crucial role in their overall well-being and academic success. This study aims to explore the life and academic experiences of international students in undergraduate International Programs at the University of Jambi in Indonesia. This research employed a mixed-method approach, combining a questionnaire adapted from the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and in-depth interviews, with a total of 13 international students from international classrooms participating in the study. The research highlights significant challenges for international students at the University of Jambi, including inadequate classroom and laboratory facilities, poor lighting, and insufficient resources, particularly in Animal Sciences and Agriculture. Language barriers due to Indonesian being the primary medium of instruction further hinder learning. Students express high dissatisfaction with services such as insurance, health facilities, extracurricular activities, and counseling, though library services are well-regarded. Recommendations include adopting English for instruction, providing bilingual training for lecturers, and improving infrastructure and student services to enhance the overall academic experience for international students
