Abstract

Many poverty alleviation programs had been implemented in the past, but only a few made it. In relation to this, the objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the roots of family poverty, (2) to identify factors related to the family poverty, and (3) to formulate a strategy for poverty alleviation. To reach these objectives, 420 poor households were randomly selected from the city of Ambon and the district of Boalemo, Gorontalo Province. They were interviewed from November 2003 through January 2005. The obtained data were analyzed by using the descriptive statistics and the multiple regression procedures. The findings pointed out that: (1) both the urban and the rural poor households lacked in productive and normative behavior, (2) factors related significantly to the welfare of urban poor families were social and political capitals; whereas to the rural poor families were natural, physical, financial, and behavioral capitals as well, and (3) the grand strategy for both urban and rural poverty alleviation should include good governance, capacity building, social capital revitalization, public policy advocacy, social assurance, infrastructure building, community-based economic development, and asset redistribution.

Abstract

Department of Social affairs implemented several empowerment programs to eradicate poverty. KUBE was one of these poverty eradication programs. KUBE was infended to over-come the group weaknesses through mutual and cooperative efforts. In this relation there were some factors affecting the KUBE dynamic i.e., member characteristics, empowerment patterns, and the KUBE social environment. To optimize the KUBE empowerment, the KUBE productive business activities were classified into three categories, namely daily income, monthly income and annual income earning activities.

Abstract

The regional government policies on vegetables agribusiness development is carried out through agropolitan area development program. The aims of this study are : (1) To get informations on perception of vegetables farmer’s towards the regional government policies in the efforts of vegetables agribusiness development, (2) To get informations on the vegetables farmer’s efforts to increase vegetables agribusiness through agropolitan area development program, and (3) To analyze the correlation of farmer’s perception towards the regional government policies in the efforts of vegetables agribusiness development with the farmer’s efforts to increase vegetables agribusiness. The method of this study is using descriptive correlation. Some important results of this study are : (1) The vegetables farmer’s perception towards the regional government policies in the efforts of vegetables agribusiness development is high, (2) Vegetables farmer’s effort to increase vegetables agribusiness is high, and (3) There is significant correlation between vegetables farmer’s perception and the efforts of the vegetables farmer’s to increase vegetables agribusiness, such as : partnership with the entrepreneurs, on-farm management, and marketing management. The supporting sub-system merit such as : the micro financial institutions, agricultural education and training, agricultural extention, faciliting of regional governments to provide market places at main market in Jakarta should be increased.

Abstract

Although the agriculture activities has been introduced for relatively a long time, the subsistent agriculture of the Arfak Tribal Group has still dominated in their agriculture system. In their agriculture activities, the new innovations has been adopted for a short time. The new innovations to be seen as a disturbance to their conservative norms. But this theory disagreed by Boef et al. (1993:206) as noted that the conservative system is not the cause but the top down agriculture program which contradicted with the local norms. This research are aimed to:(1) Identify the factors influencing the adoption process by the Arfak tribal group.(2)Identify the perceptions of the Arfak people about the agriculture innovations and extension education which they received from the government.(3) Identify the social culture values (norms, traditional system, custom) both the supporting and the obstructing the farm of Arfak people. The research used survey method and participation observation. Data are analized by proportion analysis and Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results of the research showed that:(1) The social capital which supported the innovations adoption process by the Arfak tribe are emphaty ability, cosmopolitant behaviour, creative and innovative ability.(2) There are significant correlation between the Arfak people with their learning needs, social culture, and responsive behavior of extension education launched by the government officials

Abstract

The study was conducted in August through Desember 2007. The objectives of this study were:1) to identify their job performance and 2) to determine the relationship of the agent characters and their job performances at different type of extension institution in district level. A total of 260 AEA from 17 districts in West Java were selected by stratified randomized sampling technique with proportional allocation as sample of the study. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the agents’ distribution on certain characteristics. The results shown that some substantial works need to be done in order to improve the agents’ performances due to low hygiene factors and insufficient of motivating factors. Furthermore, the Kendall coefficient of concordance W obtained mostly high and highly significant. Therefore, it were concluded respectively that AEA performed best in involving informal leaders, farmer group development, extension work plan, using extension method, program planning; and performed well in evaluation and reporting subject matters of development, farmer self reliance development, office maintenance and administrative, rural economic development and need assessment. Finally, Agriculture extension agent performed unsatisfactorily in evaluation and reporting, networking and professional development.

Abstract

Nowdays it is difficult for many families to achieve an ideal life, this situation cause, formulation managing human resource which has  a good quality is not optimal. The important thing must be carried out to make the families maintain their life is to manage the limited resource by the family resource management. This research analyzed the family resource management of participant in empowerment program and the factors that influenced them. The research design was crossectional study using survey method to collect data from 300 respondents. The result showed that highest percentage of respondent carried out the family resource management categorized as bad. There was a significant difference between the family resource management at Dramaga District and Leuwisadeng District or Pamijahan District (α<0.05). The factors which significantly influence the family resource management are income per capita, the family communication quality, the occupation status of spouse and the participation in extension program.Keywords:  family resource management, community empowerment, income per capita, extension program, communication quality

Abstract

The existence of candlenut forest in Maros District, today, is a successfull evidence of farmers living around the forest participation. Farmers around the candlenut forest has participated in managing that forest since 1826 to meet their subsitence need. They use the candlenut fruit to be one of their household income generating. Hence, those farmers have important roles to manage and to keep that forest sustainability. Any activity, including farmers participation, will undergo enthusiatic if there is any motivation within the person doing that activity. The research intended to identify and analize the contribution of farmers’ motivation to their participation in managing and utilizing candlenut forest. The data were collected on January-Maret 2010 in Maros District, South Sulawesi Province using some methods: questionnare list, interview, observation, and documents. The data were analyzed using (1) descriptive statistics, and (2) inferensial statistics based on SEM using LISREL 8.70 software programming. The result shows that farmers’ motivation is in the middle level, but their participation in managing and utilizing candlenut forest is categorized in low level. The Farmers’ motivation, however, has a positive contribution for increasing farmers participation in managing and utilizing candlenut forest.Keywords: Farmers’ motivation, farmers’ partisipation, candlenut forest

Abstract

Forest Management is facing the challenge of implementing the sustainable forest management which includes private forest. Successfully gained the Ecolabel Certificate, some private forest management units in Central Java and Yogyakarta’s districts prove that the small units run by farmers are able to implement the sustainable forest management. The farmers’ success in implementing the sustainable forest management must have been gained through learning process. How the learning process was and what local institutions influencing the farmers’ learning process of the sustainable private forest management were, were the research questions of this study. The study used explanatory survey method on 200 farmers in Gunung Kidul and Wonogiri. Data collection was conducted from December 2009 to February 2010. The data were analyzed by using descriptive technique and Structural Equations Model (SEM). The conclusions are : (1) informal local institutions have stronger influence in farmers’ learning than formal institution;(2) local institution aspects : norm, objection of organisation, leadership are potential aspects in influencing farmers’ learning intensity; (3) farmers’ learning intensity can be improved by strengthening informal local institutions and improving farmers’ capacities in organisation management.Keywords: Sustainable private forest management, private forest, farmers’ learning process, local institutions, social capital

Abstract

It is presumed that the cultural social environtment has important roles to form the farmers’ ability to manage and to utilize candlenut forest. The research intended to analyze the contribution of cultural social environment to farmers’ ability in managing and utilizing candlenut forest. The data were collected on January-Maret 2010 in Maros District, South Sulawesi Province using some methods: questionnare list, interview, observation, and documents. The data were analyzed using (1) descriptive statistics, and (2) inferensial statistics based on SEM using LISREL 8.70 software programming. The result shows that farmers’ contribution of cultural social environment, today is low. Abstract

How the learning process was and what farmers’ learning support institutions influencing of the sustainable private forest management were, were the research questions of this study. The study used explanatory survey method on 200 farmers in Gunung Kidul and Wonogiri. Data collection was conducted from December 2009 to February 2010. The data were analyzed by using descriptive technique and Structural Equations Model (SEM). The conclusions are: (1) there are significant differentiation about farmer’s learning support institutions in Gunung Kidul and Wonogiri. In Gunung Kidul District the institutions are integrated in one team work which legitimated by Bupati (the Head of District); (2) farmers’ learning intensity is low. It was significantly influenced by farmers’ learning support institutions; (3) farmers’ learning intensity can be improved by farmer empowerment activities and competent personnels.Keyword: Sustainable private forest management, farmers’ learning process, support system of farmer’s learning institutions, collaboration
