Abstract

The background of the study was the phenomenon of the first semester students of class A English Language Education Department at STAIN Mandailing Natal. Most of them were seldom using English in everyday activity because they did not have enough motivation, adequate vocabulary, and self-confidence. To activate their speaking skill ability, it was used their speaking video recording. By this, they did not only speak, but also involved in correcting, commenting and evaluating their performance in speaking skill. It was productive solution to overcome their problem. The respondents of this study were 15 first semester students Class A English language Education department in STAIN Mandailing Natal. This study was categorized into Class Action Research (CAR). The method of data collection used in this study was form test of speaking video recording which was measuring seven aspects of speaking skill, they were (1) pronunciation, (2) fluency, (3) word choice, (4) structure, (5) self-confidence, (6) teamwork and (7) creativity. The result of cycle 1 showed that the students’ average score in speaking skill was 7.2. In the cycle 2, the students achieved far better average score namely 8.4. It means there was a progress on students’ speaking skill achievement after learning through speaking video recording. The conclusion was the use of speaking video recording was able to improve the students’ speaking ability because they were brave, motivated and interested to express English as the way they wanted it.

Abstract

During the Covid19 pandemic, online learning platforms are solutions to sustain the English Language Teaching (ELT). It is an appropriate platforms option for lecturers to deliver the course materials amidst the covid19 outbreak. Some of the most frequently used platforms are Zoom and WhatsApp. The purpose of this study is to describe the EFL university students’ perceptions of the use of Zoom and WhatsApp in ELT. A virtual class in form of Zoom and WhatsApp was created to enable students to remotely attend the class and at the same time to keep in line with the covid19 health protocol. This study involved 53 students as respondents. The data were obtained through online-based questionnaire and were analyzed based on a mixed method approach by combining quantitative and qualitative method. The result revealed that the virtual class of ELT for EFL University students in form of Zoom and WhatsApp was considered positive by the learners. Although the availability and slow speed internet connection were being problems to use them in ELT, they were also rated effective and efficient in terms of time, place and expense. Moreover, learners agreed that those two online platforms can help them to improve language skills and to reduce shyness in virtual class interaction.

Abstract

Dalam menggunakan media sosial, banyak dampak positif sekaligus negatif yang didapatkan. Hal positif bermedia sosial diantaranya adalah mempermudah interaksi komunikasi, menambah koneksi, akses informasi, dan hiburan. Sementara hal negatif bermedia sosial diantaranya adalah penyalahgunaan media sosial, penyebaran hoaks, penipuan, ketergantungan dan sebagainya. Hal tersebut mendorong dilaksanakannya program pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini dengan tujuan menanamkan pemahaman dan kesadaran pemuda-pemudi yang tergabung dalam wadah organisasi Naposo Nauli Bulung di Desa Parbangunan, Kecamatan Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal, Provinsi Sumatera Utara untuk lebih bijak dalam menggunakan media sosial. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini menggunakan metode sosialisasi interaktif. Pemateri secara langsung menyampaikan materi berupa bijak bermedia sosial dan peserta yang terdiri dari pemuda-pemudi Nauli Naposo Bulung Desa Parbangunan mendengarkan. Selanjutnya, dilakukan interaksi antara pemateri dan peserta yang hadir. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah membangun kesadaran pemuda-pemudi Naposo Nauli Bulung Desa Parbangunan sehingga lebih bijak dalam bermedia sosial. Di samping itu, peserta yang hadir juga mendapatkan gambaran positif sekaligus negatif agar lebih hati-hati dan waspada dalam memanfaatkan penggunaan media sosial.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the literacy skills of 5th grade primary school students during covid-19 outbreak in Mandailing Natal Regency based on teachers’ perceptions. Descriptive qualitative approach was applied with a simple quantitative support in form of percentages. The respondents in this study were 23 primary school teachers of fifth year class from 23 different primary schools located in 23 districs in Mandailing Natal Regency. To obtain the data, a semi structured interview was conducted adapted from four literacy skills consisting of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The obtained data subsequently were analyzed by thematic analysis based on specific separated themes. The findings demonstrated four results; (1) in listening skill, dominantly, 11 (48%) teachers thought that students’ literacy level is average and for higher level of listening 11 (48%) teachers shared low. (2) in speaking, 11 (48%) teachers stated average and for higher level, 13 (57%) teachers assumed low. (3) in reading, 12 (52%) teachers noted average, and (4) in writing, 11 (48%) teachers perceived average and for higher level, (52%) 12 of teacher-respondents responded that students’ literacy skills were average. Based on these results, it is highly expected to be worthwhile for teachers, lecturers, academician, stakeholders and public community to anticipate and to develop the students’ literacy development by supporting and facilitating the students’ fundamental needs such as children books, complete and comfortable school library, providing reading corner and ensuring teachers’ mastery on digital literacy platforms amidst covid-19 pandemic and in the coming years, as well.

Abstract

Literacy is defined as the ability to listen, speak, read and write. The literacy development of 5th Grade Elementary School students amidst covid-19 pandemic era faces a myriad of problems. Those problems are urgently needed to be solved. The objective of this study is to identify problems and to discover solutions for literacy development of 5th grade elementary school students during covid-19 era pandemic. The data were collected through semi-structured interview involving 23 teachers of 5th elementary school in 23 districts located in Mandailing Natal Regency. The data were afterwards analyzed by thematic analysis with the results distributed into the most specific separated themes. The overall results revealed that 31 problems were found. They were consisting of 8 problems of listening, 8 problems of speaking, 7 problems of reading and 8 problems of writing. Moreover, this study also uncovered 32 solutions for literacy development problems. They were 10 solutions for listening, 6 solutions for speaking, 10 solutions for reading and 6 solutions for writing. These findings could function as significant sources for relevant problem solving in literacy development context amidst covid-19 pandemic era.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the English morphological awareness of EFL university students during blended learning due to the covid-19 pandemic. A mixed-method was employed and 17 students were willing to be participants. This study applied an online test to obtain quantitative data and an online open-ended questionnaire to gain qualitative data. The results demonstrated that (1) 10 students (58.8%) were categorized as moderate in English morphological awareness skills, 5 students (29.4%) were perceived high criteria and only 2 students (11.8%) were ranked low category. (2) 17 students expressed their opinion on the English learning experience during blended learning implementation due to the covid-19 pandemic which has a connection to morphological awareness. Their views are generally summarized as follows; they admitted that they actively self-studied at home, preferred offline learning to online learning, frequently practiced English at home, seldom read English books and most of them made extensive use of social media and the internet to access English learning content. The results of this study can be concluded that the English learning environment and recent technologies such as social media and the internet, could have a significant impact on building and improving students’ English morphological awareness.

Abstract

Literacy on reading Al-Qur’an means individual’s ability to read well, to understand the meaning, to understand a myriad of virtues, to notice positive effect and be conscious on consequence from reading Al-Qur’an. Al-Qur’an becomes the holy and guiding book for muslims. The virtue of reading Al-Qur’an is not restrictedly on getting bounty, but it also affects to change an individual’s character positively. Reading Al-Qur’an is important for prison inmates at Lapas Class II B Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal, Sumatera Utara. The problem to be solved in this community service is how the virtue of reading Al—Qur’an can improve character, increase good awareness, relieve soul and change mindset positively on prison inmates at Lapas Class II B Panyabungan, Kabupaten Mandailing Natal. This program was conducted by using lecturing or sharing talk method and it was strengthened by question-answer session. The expected result is that prison inmates at Lapas Kelas II B Panyabungan can maximize time positively to read Al-Qur’an with the goal to be a better person.
