Abstract

This study aimed to identify fragments found on online diaries of 6th batch SEA Teacher blog writing in St. Paul University Surigao, Philippine, and to describe the problems faced by 6th batch SEA Teacher participants in writing online diaries. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative. For collecting data, the researchers used non-interactive techniques by analyzing ten formal online diaries and distributing the questionnaire. The researchers employed three steps for analyzing the data, namely data reduction, data display, and drawing some conclusions. The researchers analyzed ten formal online diaries, the researcher found fragments on seven formal online diaries. The most significant fragment realized was missing verbs (56.52%) followed by missing subject (30.43%), added detail fragment (8.70%), and –ing fragment (4.34%). Whereas, the highest problem faced by 6th batch SEA Teacher participants in writing online diaries was lack of grammar knowledge, time limitation, limited reference, and different language used.

Abstract

TRAINING ON COMPOSING HOTS-BASED ENGLISH QUESTIONS FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. One of the changes in the newest curriculum applied in Indonesia, Curriculum 2013, is the standard of assessment. Assessment created by the teachers should be HOTS-based. İt should make students able to think critically and creatively. Knowing the importance of this and based on the survey result, community service was conducted. In the form of training, this activity aims at making English teachers of junior high school in Semarang be able to produce HOTS-based English questions. The training involved 30 English teachers of junior high school in Semarang who join MGMP. To know the result of the training, a questionnaire was distributed and a semi-structured interview was conducted. The result revealed that the training gave a positive effect on the teachers’ ability in producing HOTS-based English questions. They also had a good comprehension of the scoring system of HOTS. They know how to score students’ higher-order thinking skills. To sum up, the purpose of the training of composing HOTS-based English questions conducted was achieved.

Abstract

The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic makes many changes in the educational system. One of the changes is in the process of assessment that is conducted by the teachers. Online assessment becomes the demand for teaching and learning process. In EFL teaching context, the English teachers are also demanded to present an online assessment that meets the students’ needs. The practice of online assessment needs to be investigated to capture whether it runs well or not. In line with this case, this present study describes online assessment practices as well as the challenges faced by the EFL teachers. By conducting descriptive qualitative research, the writers observed the practices of online assessment in English teaching in a junior high school in Semarang. There are three English teachers participated in this study. To obtain the data, the writers used observation and semi-structured interview as the instruments of data collection. After the data was collected, it was analyzed and interpreted descriptively. The findings show that English teachers implemented some online assessment tools such as Google Classroom, What’s App, Google Form, and Zoom in online assessment practices during the English teaching and learning. During the implementation of online assessment, the EFL teachers found some challenges such as internet connection, the different level of students’ intelligence, students’ low motivation, and EFL teachers’ lack of computer skills. The findings of this study imply that online assessment practices need to be evaluated to have a better implementation. Further, the EFL teachers’ computer skills need to be improved to realize an exemplary practices of online assessment in English teaching and learning.

Abstract

The insertion of technology in English language teaching has been massively implemented by the English teachers during the pandemic Covid-19. This massive use of technology is also found during the assessment process. On the other hand, students still find difficulties in composing English texts. To fill this gap, this current study is investigating the current use of Quizizz as a technology-based assessment to improve the students’ writing skill during the English teaching and learning in the pandemic Covid-19. By deploying a pre-experimental research design, this study involved sixteen eighth grade students in SMP Negeri 13 Semarang as the subjects. To obtain the data, a writing test was employed in term of pre-test and post-test. The result shows that students’ writing skill was improved well after Quizizz was implemented regularly during the English teaching and learning. This result implies that Quizizz as a technology-based assessment helps the students to enhance their writing skill.

Abstract

Technology integration in language assessment has been regarded as a common strategy in an educational setting. However, teachers need to adjust the perception and cogency of assessment in an online setting as well as the concept of formative assessment in online environments. This research aimed to investigate the students' perception of online backchannel implementation as a formative assessment in improving the students' writing skills in an English classroom. For this purpose, a mixed-method was applied with a closed-ended questionnaire distributed to 32 students and semi-structured interviews carried out to 24 students at the eighth-grade students of a state junior high school in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The collected data were then analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 23 and qualitatively. The findings revealed positive perceptions of online backchannel implementation as a formative assessment in improving their writing skills. They considered it a new and innovative process of an assessment that helped them get the maximum result of writing. Furthermore, students' motivation and confidence in writing were raised. This study's implication calls for the implementation of online backchannel in English class as a formative assessment during the writing process.

Abstract

Previous research on pre-service teachers’ motivation to pursue a career in teaching found different results. Some research found altruistic motivation dominant in determining career decisions, while others suggest extrinsic or intrinsic motivation. The current study extended the topic by relating pre-service English teachers’ motivation to teach to English-speaking self-efficacy. There were 94 pre-service English teachers of different semesters participated in this study. Data were collected with a Likert-type questionnaire. Pre-service English teachers have a high motivation to pursue a career in teaching, and extrinsic motivation was the most dominant motive. The nobility of the profession, sustainability of job demand, inspiration from the teachers, and flexible working hours are among the extrinsic motives. The pre-service teachers also have a high level of English-speaking self-efficacy. However, they still have problems with anxiety, the use of idioms, the use of accurate grammar and vocabulary, and fluency. Between motivation to teach and their speaking self-efficacy lies a significant positive correlation at a moderate level. This moderate level of the relationship suggests that English-speaking self-efficacy is not a determining factor in motivating pre-service English teachers to have a career in teaching. Consequently, some English teachers may have inadequate proficiency in the language they teach.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah memperkenalkan guru taman kanak-kanak (TK) pada nursery rhymes sebagai media dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak TK. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan adanya hasil observasi dan survey yang dilakukan oleh tim pengabdian pada beberapa TK di kelurahan Sukorejo-Gunungpati, Jawa Tengah. Survey sebelumnya menungkap bahwa para guru TK masih menggunakan media gambar sederhana dan metode dril dalam memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris ke siswa mereka. Sayangnya, para guru TK tersebut masih melakukan kesalahan dalam pengucapan selama praktik drilling. Untuk itulah, penting untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Dengan melakukan serangkaian pelatihan, tim pengabdi kepada masyarakat mengajak dua puluh guru TK yang dating dari beberapa TK di Sukorejo untuk berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan ini. Berdasarkan hasil pelatihan yang telah dilaksanakan, para guru TK sangat tertarik pada penggunaan nursery rhymes dalam memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris bagi siswa mereka. Hal ini dikarenakan para guru menganggap bahwa nursery rhymes merupakan media yang sangat tepat dan cocok dengan karakter siswa di TK. Dalam sesi praktik, para guru TK dapat mengimplementasikan bagaimana menggunakan nursery rhymes di kelas mereka. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berjalan dengan baik.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini memfokuskan pada kegiatan sosialisasi yang berfungsi  untuk memberikan edukasi kepada para orang tua terutama ibu-ibu rumah tangga dalam mendampingi tumbuh kembang anak-anak mereka di rumah. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di Balai RW 12 Gemah Kecamatan Gayamsari, Kota Semarang. Metode yang digunakan dalam sosialisasi kali ini adalah metode penyuluhan dan praktik pengasuhan yang didampingi oleh para dosen dan praktisi psikologi. Materi yang disampaikan adalah terkait bagaimana cara mendidik anak secara positif sehingga menghasilkan tumbuh kembang yang positif, dan mendidik tidak saja dibebankan kepada seorang ibu saja, namun juga seorang ayah. Hasilnya, orang tua yang menghadiri kegiatan sosialisasi menjadi lebih paham akan fungsi utama mereka sebagai orang tua dan bagaimana seharusnya menerapkan parenting positif dalam keluarga kecil mereka, serta bisa menerapkan pola asuh yang lebih komunikatif dengan anak-anak yang tentu saja melibatkan semua pihak dalam keluarga.

Abstract

Quizizz is presently the most popular online educational application for learning media and assessment tools. Teachers can assess students' learning abilities quickly, easily, and systematically while using it. It has attractive audio-visual features, humorous memes, stunning themes, and comprehensive assessment analysis for educators. Due to these benefits, many educators use Quizizz for educational purposes. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to investigate how students react to Quizizz as an assessment instrument for English language learning and investigate the effectiveness of Quizizz as a fun assessment tool for students, as well as the difficulties encountered by students when using the Quizizz application to take tests. This study found that the average response rate of 82.34% based on questionnaires and interviews with students, indicating that Quizizz has a positive impact on students. This response shows that students are enthusiastic and engaged in learning, thus enhancing their learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research is research based on the world of education which is related to the examination process which is usually related to level advancement carried out at the high school level. This research refers to research on listening tests compared to reading tests on English language arts works. Participants were given two types of input, where previously participants were divided into two groups. Listening test group and reading test group. The listening test group was given the task of listening to audio in the form of a song being played. The reading group was given treatment in the form of being asked to read a text containing the lyrics of the song played to the listening group. This research is quantitative research that uses numerical data in the form of student grades, the analysis uses regression analysis, namely analysis that correlates variables, the analysis tool uses the SPSS application and also ANOVA analysis. As a result, the difference in results from the type of test was not very significant, and it turned out that personality type had no effect on test results or final test scores.
