Abstract

ABSTRACT  Chrysanthemum cut flowers  (Dendranthema grandiflora L.) after harvest have a short vase life, so that efforts are needed to extend the freshness period. The basic principle of extending the freshness of cut flowers is through soaking in water containing sugar, controlling acidity, and microbes in the soaking solution. This research aims to determine the effect of wuluh starfruit extract and sugar concentrations in the soaking solution on the vase life of chrysanthemums. The research was conducted using Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting two factors, that is concentration of wuluh starfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) with variations concentration  0% (B0), 1% (B1), 2% (B2), 3% (B3) and white crystalline sugar with variations concentration 0% (S0), 1% (S1), 2% (S2), 4% (S3), so there are 16 treatment combinations. Each treatment was three repetitions. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variants (ANOVA) followed by an Honestly Significant Difference Test (BNJ) with a 95% confidence levels. The results showed that treatment giving of wuluh starfruit extract 2% + 1% of sugar (B2S1) was able to maintain chrysanthemum cut flowers during storage with maintaining flower vase life up to 17.80 days. Keywords: Chrysanthemum, soaking solution, vase life

Abstract

[THE EFFECT OF PLANTING MEDIA COMPOSITION AND POLYBAG SIZE ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF RED LETTUCE (Lactuca sativa L.) ]. The composition of the growing media and the size of the polybag play an important role in container vegetable production, as they are related to the availability of nutrients, water, and root space in the growing media for the plant to grow. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of planting media composition and polybag size on the growth and yield of red lettuce (Lactuca sativa L). A factorial experiment with two treatment factors was conducted using a randomized block design (RCBD) with three replications. The first factor was the growing medium, which consisted of soil, rice husk charcoal, and goat manure in the composition of 1:2:3, 2:3:1, and 3:1:2. The second factor was the polybag size, which consisted of 15 cm x 15 cm, 20 cm x 20 cm, and 20 cm x 25 cm. The results showed that the growing media composed of soil, husk charcoal, goat manure with a composition of 1:2:3 had a higher N nutrient content and produced higher growth of red lettuce plants compared to other compositions, as shown by plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, shoot fresh weight, and root fresh weight. Plant growth also increased as the size of the polybag used increases.

Abstract

Central Java province is the largest waste producer in Indonesia, with 4.25 million tons in 2022. Salatiga contributes quite a lot of waste in Central Java; according to data from the Salatiga City Communication and Information Service in 2018, organic waste (70%) and plastic (19%) were recorded. The objectives of the community service activity include increasing the housewives awareness, skills, and partnerships regarding the concept and actual practice of 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle). Activities include counseling, training, demonstrations, direct practice, Focus Group Discussion, mentoring, and evaluation of responses/output. The results of this activity conclude that the most significant potential waste from households in partner women groups (PKK) in Salatiga City is plastic waste, followed by food waste and waste from cooking activities. Community service activities trained and assisted in sorting and processing waste into economically valuable materials, namely compost, liquid organic fertilizer, artificial decorations, and various plastic creations, which received a positive response from the PKK group. The waste collection-sorting-deposit activity has been running in partner PKK groups up to 4 stages. However, only a few households have been involved due to a lack of time from family members, the hassle aspect, and the economic potential, which is not high enough. Processing organic waste into compost and POC, as well as inorganic waste into flower decoration creations, is an alternative application of the 3NG concept that housewives can carry out and is a PKK program. Interest in follow-up counseling and training is relatively high at a score of 4 on a scale of 1-5. This community service activity is expected to support national and global programs in improving care and the role of society in understanding waste management; community social entrepreneurship through processing waste into marketable products and education about environmental care to support a household-scale circular economy, supported by partnerships with external parties including Waste Bank (BSI) and the government.
