Abstract

Abstract

The most significant risk factor for presbyopia is age. However, when symptoms of presbyopia occur earlier than usual, it is called premature presbyopia. Premature presbyopia is a reduction in the ability to accommodate near-eye vision that is faster than expected. This research is an attempt to find out what are the risk factors that can causes premature presbyopia. To conduct a literature review to determine the age distribution of premature presbyopia and determine risk factors associated with premature presbyopia. This research was conducted by the method of literature review which is a method used to collect data or sources related to the topics raised in a study. Based on the results of literature review from several journals and research results show that the age range of patients with premature presbyopia is at the age range of 36-39 years. The risk factors that affect the incidence of premature presbyopia are: sex (gender), gadget users and near work, smoking and tobacco use, and refractive errors. It is hoped that this literature review can be used as an initial prediction in the management of basic eye examinations seen from their daily activities and lifestyle and it is also hoped that this literature review can be a reference for refractionist opticiant in dealing with patients who have near vision complaints so as not to hesitate in providing correction of additions to patients with age <40 years. It is hoped that this literature review can be used as an initial prediction in the management of basic eye examination seen from their daily activities and lifestyle.

Abstract

Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world and in Indonesia. The prevalence of blindness due to cataracts increases annually by 0.1% of the total Indonesian population. Cataracts are caused by several risk factors. Based on this, early prevention efforts are needed to reduce the risk factors for cataract blindness. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of risk factors for cataract incidence based on the epidemiological triad, determine the relationship and magnitude of risk factors for cataract incidence. This type of research uses a literature review method of 16 journals consisting of 12 national journals and 4 international journals that discuss cataract risk factors. The results showed that risk factors were significantly associated with a p value of <0.05 with cataract incidence. Host risk factors are age ≥60 years, female gender, low education level, non-white race, genetic history (family cataract, diabetes mellitus, hypertension), and smoking habit. Based on agent exposure to ultraviolet light, and lack of antioxidant consumption are more at risk for cataract incidence. Then based on the environment, risk factors consist of climate, work outside the building, and low income levels. In conclusion, age, gender, education, race, genetic history (family cataract, diabetes mellitus, hypertension), smoking habit, ultraviolet light exposure, lack of antioxidant consumption, climate, occupation, and income level are significantly related and at risk for cataract incidence.

Abstract

Eye health examination is a crucial component of children's overall health assessment. Early eye examination plays a significant role in detecting and preventing vision loss or visual impairments in children. Therefore, it is vital for parents to understand the importance of eye examinations and proper eye care for their children. This study aims to assess Parents' Knowledge About the Importance of Early Eye Examination in Children at RW 05, Galanggang Village, Batujajar District, West Bandung Regency. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. Primary data were collected through questionnaires. The study sample comprised 83 respondents. Findings reveal that, among the 83 respondents, parental knowledge regarding the importance of early eye examination in children is categorized as "Moderate," with 55 respondents (66.3%) falling into this category. It is expected that parents, as the closest individuals to their children, will be more proactive in seeking information about the significance of early eye examinations to prevent or reduce potential risks. This can be achieved by consulting healthcare professionals directly or by accessing information through electronic and print media.

Abstract

Background: Refractive errors are one of the most common causes of visual impairment, covering all age groups including children. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of refractive errors and demographic characteristics that occur in students at the Islamic Boarding School Persatuan Islam 31 Banjaran, Bandung Regency. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional study conducted from January to February 2024 at Pondok Pesantren Persatuan Islam 31 Banjaran, Bandung Regency. The sample was selected by total sampling. Subjects were examined using optotype snellen chart, students with visual acuity worse than 6/9 underwent further examination using refractometry, and correction using trial set lenses.Result: The results showed that of the total 674 students who took part in the visual acuity examination, 173 students (25.67%) had visual impairment with refractive errors. Refractive errors were more common among female students (69.79%) than male students (31.21%). Refractive errors were more common in 14-15 year olds (21.38%) compared to other age groups. The most common types of refractive errors were myopia (45.67%), astigmatism (36.99%), myopic astigmatism (15.03%), and hyperopia (1.73%). In addition, there were also students suspected to have organic disorders (0.5%) who experienced lazy eye (amblyopia). Conclusion : Early detection efforts of visual impairment need to be carried out by parents, school teachers, health workers and the government by conducting regular visual acuity screening and refractive error examinations at all levels of society, especially school-age children
