Abstract

This research is focused on three main objectives, namely: 1) tracing the understanding regarding the meaning of tolerance in national and state life, 2) elaborating the essence as well as the purpose of multicultural education, and 3) evaluating the role of multicultural education in shaping tolerant character. The approach used was qualitative with literature study method. The research data was obtained from diverse literature sources, then analyzed using hermeneutic methods. The results of the study show that: 1) tolerance is a fundamental aspect to maintain the harmony of national life amidst the diversity of society. A tolerant attitude is necessary to realize peace as well as harmony in the face of differences; 2) multicultural education is very relevant for Indonesian society, especially the younger generation through formal education, given that the Indonesian nation has a complex character. This education serves to open insights so that society can accept diversity as something natural, thus enabling mutual respect and maintaining coexistence; 3) the application of multicultural education can be integrated into various subjects or lectures, such as citizenship education, Islamic religious education, and other fields. The role of educators is very important in inculcating the value of tolerance through multicultural education, by utilizing digital technologies such as the internet and online platforms combined with appropriate learning methods and media. It facilitates learners to understand the concept of tolerance as well as apply it in social, national and state life. Abstract

Religious education in primary schools has often been used merely as a complement to the learning process. Government attention and commitment to developing religious education remain limited to fulfilling the obligations mandated by existing legislation. The thematic and integrative approach in Curriculum 2013 provides new hope for religious education, enabling it to be integrated with other subjects in the learning process. The implementation of Curriculum 2013 was driven by the emergence of deviant behavior among students, ranging from moral decline to the erosion of students’ character. The new breakthroughs introduced in Curriculum 2013 are expected to address various social issues in education. This paper seeks to reveal the integration model of religion and science in the new curriculum, particularly through the unification of subjects. This integration is carried out by incorporating basic competencies into themes related to nature and the environment in daily life. The integration of subject materials into several themes is expected to help students develop a holistic understanding of the material, rather than a partial one.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of strengthening Islamic and national values among students, especially amidst the challenges of the modern era that demand that the younger generation possess religious, moderate, and patriotic character. In this context, the Makesta IPNU-IPPNU activities in Kudus serve as a strategic medium for developing Nahdlatul Ulama student cadres who adhere to moderate Islamic values while upholding national values. The primary objective is to analyze how moderate Islamic values and a spirit of nationalism are integrated into the cadre development process of Nahdlatul Ulama students. The research approach used a qualitative method with field research, involving interview techniques, observation, and document collection. The results of the study indicate that Makesta activities play an effective role in instilling Islamic values such as tawasuth (middle attitude), tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (balance), and i'tidal (justice), along with national values such as nationalism, the spirit of mutual cooperation, and social responsibility. These values are implemented through training activities, joint worship, and social actions that foster spirituality, discipline, and tolerance in participants. Theoretically, this study contributes to strengthening the study of community-based Islamic education by emphasizing the strategic function of IPNU-IPPNU in shaping a young generation with religious, nationalist, and moderate characters.
