Abstract

Perimping grass (Themeda gigantea) is a lignocellulosic biomassa which has not been utilized optimally. Fractionation of perimping grass can be converted into valuable products. The objectives the research is to study the effect of the process condition on pulp yield and lignin content in pulp. The effect of the process conditions were studied by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) using Central Composite Design (CCD). Fractionation of perimping grass performed on a normal boiling point of the solution with a concentration of formic acid (60%, 70% and 80%), the reaction time of 60-180 minutes, solid liquid ratio of 10/1-20/1, 40 grams perimping grass, HCl catalyst 0,1% wt. The result shows that fractionation of perimping grass have yield pulp of 43,91% to 59,23% and lignin pulp 3,26% - 13,92%. The concentration of formic acid and reaction time influence each response significantly.Keywords: central composite design, formic acid, fractionation of biomass, perimping grass, response surface methodology

Abstract

Biomass gasification is a very complex thermo chemical process which involves the reaction of a chemical reaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the reactor dimensions as a reference in making a gaifier made from empty fruit bunches by obtain optimum working conditions and simulate CH4, CO, dan H2 pruducts in the reactor by varying the amount and position of air entering the reactor. This researh utilized software GAMBIT 2.4.6 for meshing and boundary identification and FLUENT 6.3.26 for simulation. Mass flow rate of feed empty fruit bunches waste in the simulation was 10 kg/jam with variations of air equivalence ratio ie 0.2, 0.25, 0.3 and the number of nozzles 2,3 and 4. From the simulations results, the highest combustible gas was obtained when the variable of ER value = 0.3 and number of nozel 2 ie CO = 18.53 %, H2 = 0.9 % and CH4 = 0.0365 % with HHV = 24.85 kJ/Nm3.Keywords : Empty Palm Bunches, Gasification, CFD, FLUENT

Abstract

Corn stalk is solid waste of agricultural which is not optimally utilized. Corn stalk used for pulp and paper raw materials and also used for feeding animal. The aim of hemicellulose hydrolysis from corn stalk is to study the possibility of utilization corn stalks as raw material for chemical industry, to know the behaviour and to obtain the kinetics pattern of hemicellulose hydrolysis from corn stalk in organosolv process. The experimental of hemicellulose hydrolysis from corn stalk is carried out in a batch at laboratory scale. Experimental variables are, concentration of formic acid (70; 80; 90% wt), the reaction time (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90,105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180 minutes) and ratio of liquid-solid is 10:1, with catalyst hydrochloric acid 0.2% wt. The experimental result shows that the hydrolysis of hemicellulose from corn stalk in organosolv process produce xylose and furfural which can be used as raw material in industry. Diluted xylose and furfural in black liquor in this experiment are xylose (0.88-3,78 gr/liter) and furfural (1.7-3.69 gr) with percentage of hemicellulose recovery range from 37-82%. The behaviour of  hemicellulose hydrolysis from corn stalk in media formic acid show two series processes that have a different rate. Experimental conformity data exceeded 95% (R-square 95%) with the model hydrolysis of hemicellulose that proposed by Parajo et al [1993]. Abstract

The increasing demand of pulp in the world requires sufficient availability of raw materials. To fulfill the raw material supply, it can be established through development of industrial plantations (HTI). Acacia sp and Eucalyptus sp are the types of wood that are prioritized for development in industrial plantations because these species are fast growing species, high timber production, and do not require high living requirements. The study was conducted on a mixture of Acacia crassicarpa and Eucalyptus raw materials with the compositions are 75% Acacia crassicarpa : 25% Eucalyptus (AC:EH-75:25), 50% Acacia crassicarpa : 50% Eucalyptus (AC:EH-50:50)and 25% Acacia crassicarpa :75% Eucalyptus (AC:EH-25:75). Pulping is done by means of a kraft process. The best cooking conditions with kappa number target 17 ± 1 were obtained in the variety of raw materials for 25% Acacia crassicarpa and 75% Eucalyptus (AC:EH-25:75) with active alkali concentration 18%, temperature 165 oC, ratio 1: 4 and H factor 800 with screen pulp yield 50,52%, brightness 36,96% ISO, viscosity 1045 mL/g, and productivity 248,6 kg/m3 where in this variation the composition of the wood used contains more Eucalyptus than Acacia crassicarpa. Abstract

Filler is one of paper component inside paper made in paper industry and nominated as number two biggest component in paper. In order to reduce over basis weight problem in one of paper industry, a research about filler modification using calcium silicate is held. The purpose of the research is to observe the effect of calcium silicate addition and it’s optimum dosage in paper making process. Lab trial showing that adding the calcium silicate on 70 gsm copy and offset paper making process show that even with filler content increment, calcium silicate help to maintain paper grammage and thickness. Where for the copy paper paper thickness at filler 23% without calcium cilicate addition is 123 mm and with addition of calcium cilicate 1% dan 2% dosage, paper thickness become 129 mm. For offset paper paper thickness at filler 23% without calcium cilicate addition is 123 mm and with addition of calcium cilicate 1% dan 2% dosage, paper thickness become 124 mm.Keywords: Paper Making, Filler, PCC, GCC, Calcium Silicate, Paper Thickness.

Abstract

Gibbs free energy minimization method has been used in modelling the performance of a downdraft gasifier. The performance is represented by the composition of resulting gas. Sixteen gases considered are H2, CO, CH4, H2O, CO2, N2, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, NO, NO2, N2O, HCN, NH3, H2S and SO2. The simulation is carried out making used of EXCEL. The result showed that the predicted value of model fit reasonably well with experimental data. The model was also used to investigate the influence of biomass composition, oxidant ratio and composition of oxidizing agent to composition of the resulting gas. Three kinds of biomass considered are oil palm shell,oil palm frond and empty fruit bunch. The oxidant ratio simulated is varied from 0 to 1 while  composition of oxidizing agent is varied from 21% - 100% oxigen. The simulation result showed that those three parameters play an important role in gasification process which in combination can produce total H2 and CO up to more than 85%.Keyword : Gasification, modelling, downdraft gasifier, Gibbs free energy minimization

Abstract

Most energy consumption in the chemical industry is used for temperature change operations. Heat integration method is used to increase energy efficiency on process streams and reducing utility requirement in the production process by installing Heat Exchanger Network (HEN). Design of HEN can be done by software assistance or often called tools for speed up the design time. Therefore software that can be obtained for free and can be developed openly is needed. Program for HEN design is created by Python programming language and applying computational algorithm Maximum Energy Recovery (MER) target calculation using interval-temperature (IT) method and network design using pinch method. Abstract

Packaging material’s demand continue to increase along with the development of industry all over the world. Styrofoam as conventional packaging materials, have been looked for a subtitute because it does not decompose and the depletion of fossil fuels as it’s feedstock. Cornstalk has abundant amount as biomass waste. Despite it’s well known quality as raw material for pulp, it hasn’t got utilized yet. Molded pulp as one of the alternative packaging, has a promising future with it’s degradable characteristics and good mechanical properties. Cornstalk as raw material for the pulp along with the empty fruit bunch (EFB) ash works as the alkaline source for the alkaline pulping. The binderless molded pulp then formed with the help of hot press. The thermoset properties of the lignin itself, give the posibility to produce molded pulp without any binder resin. Tensile index, tear index and burst index were determined experimentally to express the mechanical properties of the binderless molded pulp products. This experiment were done as an effort to utilize the biorenewable resource to make a packaging product that could be an alternative to the conventional one.The result indicate that cornstalk as raw material to produce molded pulp gives good mechanical properties compare to styrofoam packaging product. Molded pulp from cornstalk gives tensile index 17,5 – 34 Nm/g, tear index  10 – 26 mN.m2/g and burst index 0,89 – 1,52 kPa.m2/g. Abstract

The gasification stove is one of the technologies for converting biomass into thermal energy for cooking that energy saving and environmental friendly. The gasification stove can increase thermal efficiency up to twice and the energy relatively larger than biomass combustion with conventional methods. The objective of research is to study the effect of secondary air flow rates on the perfomance of the gasification stove. This research uses three units gasification stove with dimension outer cylinder of the stove 1(H1 = 30 cm, D1 = 17 cm); stove 2 (H2 = 30 cm, D2 = 20 cm) and stove 3 (H3 = 30 cm, D3 = 23 cm). While the fuel used is teak wood. To evaluating stove perfomance procedure WBT (water boiling test) was used with response variables: burning rates, thermal efficiency, and fire power. Color, height, flame temperature of the stove are including in evaluation of stove perfomance. The experimental result obtained burning rates is approximately 14.03 to 19.55 g/minutes. Thermal efficiency of the natural draft gasification stove is approximately 29.07% to 39.9%, with the highest efficiency is on the stove with cylinder outside the stove in 23 cm diameter. The natural draft gasification stove capable of producing up to 5.9 kWth thermal energy with the highest flame temperature reaches 940oC.Keywords: biomass, gasification, natural draft, stove, thermal efficiency.

Abstract

Oil palm trunk are solid waste with considerable potential and have not been used optimally. Oil palm trunk can be used as raw materials for fiber-based industries such as the pulp and paper industry, starch industry, and other timber industries. The objectives of this research is to obtain the characteristics of pulp (yield, alpha cellulose and lignin of pulp) and studied the effect of cooking time, temperature, and solid to liquid ratio on the pulp produced. Pulping was performed on a rocking digester with 30 grams of oil palm trunk powder starch free, formic acid as a solvent with reaction temperature (110 °C, 130°C and 150 °C), reaction time (60 minutes, 120 minutes and 180 minute), liquid-solid ratio (10:1 b/b) catalyst H2SO4 0,1% wt. The result showed yield pulp of = 32,78-38,99%, lignin pulp of = 7,22-9,22% and alpha cellulose of 92,46-94,85%. The cooking time and temperature has the most influence the characteristics and response of the pulp. Keywords : formic acid, oil palm trunk, organosolv pulping
