Abstract

Infections and antibiotic resistance pose significant challenges to global healthcare. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial potential of endophytic fungi isolated from betel leaves (Piper betle L.) against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The research involved isolating endophytic fungi using Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), purifying the isolates, and testing their antibacterial activity through the disk diffusion method. The results revealed that three endophytic fungal isolates produced inhibition zones, with the highest average diameter of 17.46 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and 18.66 mm against Staphylococcus epidermidis. These findings indicate the potential of betel leaf endophytic fungi as a natural source of antibacterial agents. This study underscores the role of endophytic fungi in developing new antibiotics to combat bacterial resistance.

Abstract

The ramania plant (Bouea macrophylla Griffith) is still very limited in its use, however ramania leaves have the potential to control the wound healing process or infection. Infections are generally caused by bacteria such as Staphyloccous aures, Escherichia coli, Actinomyces spp, and many more. This literature review research aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ramania leaf extract (Bouea macrophylla Griffith). The method used in the review process for this article is a narrative review through searching articles that have been published both nationally and internationally. Searching research journal libraries, scientific articles and journal reviews via Google Schoolar, Researchgate, and the Garuda Portal. This literature review study was obtained from article searches. research in the last 10 years. There are 5 journals that meet the specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the results of the literature review that has been carried out, it was found that ramania/gandaria leaves have potential as an antibacterial treatment. The antibacterial activity in ramania leaves is due to the work activity of the secondary metabolite compounds contained therein, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, quinones and tannins. Ramania leaves have moderate to strong activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Actinomyces spp, while the antibacterial activity of ramania leaves is weak against Escherichia coli.

Abstract

The use of plants as medicines in Indonesia has been going on for a long time. One example is mulberry leaves (Morus alba L.) which are traditionally used to treat burns. Mulberry leaf extract (Morus alba L.) contains secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and terpenoids. The presence of these contents in mulberry leaves has the potential as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant. This research aims to prepare and test the physical properties of mulberry leaf extract gel (Morus alba L). The extraction method used is maceration. The gel formula is made with three extract concentrations, namely F I (1.5%), F II (2%) and F III (2.5%). The physical properties of the gel include organoleptic tests, pH, homogeneity, adhesion and spreadability. The results of all physical properties tests on formulas I, II and II met the requirements for gel preparations, but the spreadability test for formula I did not meet the requirements for gel preparations. From the results of the physical properties test of the ethanol extract gel of mulberry leaves (Morus alba L.) it can be concluded that formula III is the best and optimal formula.
