Abstract

Teledentistry has gained an increasing popularity among dentists as an alternative innovative solution to minimize the risk of the transmission of COVID-19 and other infections. Dentists at the Bandung community health center have started implementing teledentistry since the government issued a reference for dental and oral health services during the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to analyze the implementation of teledentistry in community health centers based on the references issued by the government. The population consisted of dentists who implemented teledentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Bandung community health centers. There were 26 respondents as the research samples who were selected using a non-probability sampling technique. This was cross-sectional descriptive research which used an online questionnaire regarding the implementation of teledentistry based on the Technical Guidelines for Dental and Oral Health Services from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. The implementation of teledentistry includes teleconsultation, telediagnosis, teletriage, telemonitoring, teleeducation, communication tools, provision of prescriptions and referrals, service fees, and medical records. The data analysis was carried out by presenting the results of the teledentistry implementation, namely the types of teledentistry implemented by the dentists were teleconsultation 100%, telediagnosis 92.3%, teletriage 76.9%, telemonitoring 7.7%, teleeducation 92.3%; 100% carried out teledentistry via short messages, 76.9% had given prescriptions, and 80.7% had given referrals, 84.6% did not charge any service fee, and only 57.6% recorded medical records. The implementation of the teledentistry services during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Bandung Community Health Centers has not been optimal because the regulation has not been well socialized. In addition, there has been no legal certainty and laws governing teledentistry in Indonesia.

Abstract

Teledentistry is a dental health service that provides consultation, guidance, or education remotely using information technology. Perception and knowledge play an essential role in the implementation of teledentistry. The purpose of this study was to explore the development of dentists' perceptions and knowledge of the concept of teledentistry. This study used a scoping review method based on the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Screening and study selection were carried out using the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-Scr). Literature searches were conducted through PubMed, Science Direct, and EBSCOHost with keywords and inclusion criteria, hand searching, and viewing the list of selected article references. There were 23 articles analyzed according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Changes in dentists' perceptions of teledentistry would help shorten waiting list, reduce costs for dental practice, additional visits to take photographs, and additional costs to provide facilities/ equipment for teledentistry before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three articles (2015-2016) state that most dentists did not know or have little knowledge about teledentistry. Nine articles published during the pandemic revealed that the majority of dentists had knowledge of teledentistry. The results of this study found that developments in dentists’ perception, namely teledentistry would help shorten waiting list, reduce costs for dental practice, the need for additional visits to take photographs, and additional costs to provide facilities/ equipment for teledentistry. The level of knowledge of dentists about teledentistry increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dental health services at primary health care (PHC) are the first and foremost effort to overcome dental health problems in the community, consisting of Individual Health Care (IHC), Community Dental Health Care (CDHC), and School Dental Health Care (SDHC). The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia has hampered dental health services at PHC. This study aims to describe the implementation of dental health Care at the PHC from before COVID-19 pandemic to the new normal adaptation period. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from January to February 2022. The sample consisted of 15 PHC in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, interviewing dentists and doing a checklist on the rubric for each activity implementation. Data processing by the percentage of implementation. Results: The implementation of promotive before the pandemic was 100%, when the pandemic decreased and increased again by almost 100% during the new normal adaptation period. Before the pandemic, most preventive measures were just 56%. During the pandemic, there were nearly no activities, and during the new normal adaptation period, there was an increase, but the percentage was low. The curative implementation before the Pandemic was almost 100% implemented. At the beginning of the pandemic, the implementation decreased, but 100% was carried out for counseling and referrals. Most care has been implemented up to 100% during the adaptation period. The implementation of rehabilitation during the pandemic period was still low (40%). At the beginning of the pandemic 13%, and during the adaptation period, there was an increase according to the pandemic period (33%). Conclusion: Before the pandemic, promotive and curative services had been maximized, while preventive and rehabilitative services still needed to be maximized. During the beginning of the pandemic, almost all services stopped. During the new normal adaptation period, all services have increased again compared to the initial period of the pandemic. Keywords: dental; oral health; primary health care; COVID-19; pandemic

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The long-standing COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in the implementation of service restrictions and the emergence of patients' fear of coming to health facilities, which could have caused changes in patient visit trends. The aim was to determine trends in the number of visits, demographic characteristics and patient diagnoses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: the descriptive and population research used secondary data from medical records of new visiting patients and existing patients at the general dental clinic, pavilion clinic, and emergency ward at the Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital (RSGM UNPAD) from April 2019 to March 2021. Sample for number of patient visits before and during the pandemic, the total sampling was 12,714 and the characteristics and diagnosis of patients during the pandemic were 3,625 medical records, while non-probability sampling technique with purposive sampling was used. Univariate analysis used frequency distribution, line charts, bar charts. Result: The number of patient visits at RSGM UNPAD during the pandemic decreased by around 60% (from 9,089 to 3,625 visits) compared to before the pandemic. The patient demographics during the pandemic at RSGM and at its three polyclinics were relatively the same: adults (26-45 years), female, domiciled in the city of Bandung, private employees, Moslem, Sundanese, unmarried, and past patient status. The most common diagnosis at RSGM was pulpitis 914 (61%); in general dental polyclinic was pulpitis 751 (33%); in the pavilion clinic was malocclusion 428 (32%) and in the emergency ward was pulpitis, necrosis of pulp and impacted each 4 (16%). Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, patient visits to the dental hospital decreased more than half, the demographic characteristics of the three polyclinics were relatively the same and the most common patient diagnosis was pulpitis.KEYWORDS : Demographics; dental hospital; oral diagnosis; the COVID-19 pandemic; trend of patient visits
