Abstract

Cancer became the second leading cause of death in the world at about 9.6 million deaths in 2018. One of the most common treatments is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has side effects such as nausea vomiting, stomatitis, anorexia, bone marrow damage, and alopecia. Treatment of vomiting nausea can be done through non-pharmacological therapy, namely by using aromatherapy. The review aims to find out and synthesize the scientific literature on the effectiveness of aromatherapy against nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The literature search method uses the electronic databases PubMed, Proquest, Science Direct, and Google Scholar using search keywords: cancer + chemotherapy + aromatherapy + nausea + vomiting; cancer AND chemotherapy OR aromatherapy AND nausea AND vomiting. Out of a total of 3946 articles found, 30 were determined from the results of matching the title with the abstract. After removing duplicate articles, each abstract article is evaluated. The next 23 articles were obtained, read in full, and searched for relevant articles. Selected 8 articles used to be included in the final data set. A total of 8 articles use aromatherapy from various types of herbal medicinal plants such as lavender, ginger, and peppermint.. The conclusion is that aromatherapy has been shown to be effective for reducing symptoms of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.Kanker menjadi penyebab kematian kedua di dunia sekitar 9,6 juta kematian pada 2018. Abstract

Anemia can hurt pregnant women and fetuses. Pregnant women who experience anemia can cause complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The impact on pregnant women is the labor process that takes a long time, bleeding, and shock due to contractions. Adverse effects on the fetus are premature birth, low birth weight, damage to the placenta, mental development problems, and stillbirth. This study aims to review the evidence related to the effect of health promotion with video media on knowledge and behavior about anemia in pregnant women. The Scoping review uses the Framework from Arksey and O'Malley, which focuses on the review with the PEOS framework, conducts literature searching databases and relevant gray literature, selects relevant studies using inclusion and exclusion criteria, conducts critical appraisals to assess article quality, performs data extraction, analyze and report results. 8 literature were selected and had Grade A. Results of scoping review Factors that influence anemia in pregnant women are age, education, occupation, and parity. Health promotion can increase knowledge and behavior about anemia in pregnant women. Risk factors for anemia have an impact on pregnant women and fetuses. Based on the results of the scoping review, it was found that gaps in this study were about health promotion with video media about anemia in pregnant women more than the influence of knowledge on factors that influence anemia in pregnant women, namely education, influence, and behavior, and the impact of anemia on pregnant women. There are still few studies examining the impact of anemia on the fetus. Factors that affect anemia in pregnant women are age, education, occupation, and parity. Health promotion can increase knowledge and behavior about anemia in pregnant women. Risk factors for anemia have an impact on pregnant women and fetuses. Suggestion: It is necessary to apply policies to reduce the incidence of anemia in pregnant women and provide programs to prevent anemia in pregnant women.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Dioscorea alata L. tubers (DA) are suspected to prevent diabetes mellitus (DM) because they have a low glycemic index. However, only a few reports about the anti-diabetic effect of DA were reported up to date. This study aims to analyze the effect of DA consumption on several diabetic biomarkers through in vitro, in vivo, and in silico analysis.METHODS: In vitro experiments were conducted by observing the anti-inflammatory activity of DA extract, steroidal saponins (SDA) isolated from DA, and diosgenin in lymphocyte cell cultures. The tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interferon (IFN)-γ percentages were analyzed by flow cytometry. In vivo study involved 24 healthy adolescents that were given a boiled DA 10 hours post-prandial. The blood sugar levels were measured at 0, 30, 60, and 120 min after treatment. Furthermore, the in silico study was carried out by analyzing the active compounds and predicting the biological activity, the target proteins, and interactions of target proteins with compounds contained in DA .RESULTS: DA extract, SDA isolated from DA, and diosgenin at 50 µg/mL significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IFN-γ in lymphocyte cell culture. The blood glucose levels in the DA group were lower at 30 and 60 min after treatment. Based on the in silico study, the anti-diabetic activity of DA was speculated to be attributed to the mechanisms of anti-hyperglycemia, prevention of mitochondrial dysfunction, anti-inflammation, and treated insulin resistance. Several proteins included in the DM pathway became the protein target of compounds contained in DA.CONCLUSION: DA potentially have an anti-diabetic activity through several mechanisms.KEYWORDS: hyperglycemia, inflammation, insulin resistance, yam

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of Dioscorea alata ethanol extract (EEDA) on the histological features of the ampulla of the uterine tube in a mouse model of endometriosis. This was a true experimental study with a posttest-only control group design using 30 mice divided into six groups: a normal control group (K), a negative control group (KN) induced with endometriosis, a positive control group (KP) induced with endometriosis and treated with letrozole, and three treatment groups induced with endometriosis and administered EEDA at doses of 50, 250, and 500 mg/kg body weight. The observed parameters included inflammatory cell infiltration, epithelial damage, and fibrosis. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for normality, which showed that the data were not normally distributed; therefore, the nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis test followed by the Mann–Whitney post hoc test was applied. The results showed that the KN group had the highest scores for inflammatory cell infiltration, epithelial damage, and fibrosis (p < 0.05). Administration of EEDA significantly reduced all three parameters compared with the KN group (p < 0.05), with histological improvement increasing in a dose-dependent manner and the most optimal dose observed at 500 mg/kg body weight. It can be concluded that Dioscorea alata ethanol extract may improve the histological features of the ampulla of the uterine tube through anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic mechanisms at an optimal dose of 500 mg/kg body weight; however, the specific molecular mechanisms still require further verification. These findings indicate the potential of Dioscorea alata ethanol extract as a candidate herbal-based alternative therapy in an experimental model of endometriosis.
