Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out whether there is any correlation between students’ behavioral engagement and students’ speaking skill. The research used quantitative approach and the method was correlational research. The population was the eighth-grade students of SMP Islam Malahayati Jakarta. The sample of 26 students were randomly selected. The data of the students’ behavioral engagement were collected by using the questionnaire which was adopted from Miserandino’s BEQ, while the data of students’ speaking skill were collected by using the speaking test which had been validated by the expert judgment. The result shows that there is a positive significant correlation between students’ behavioral engagement and their speaking skill. It can be proven from the result of rxy = 0.698 is higher than rtable = 0.388 and tcount = 4.770 is higher than ttable = 1.7109. Coefficient determination shows that (0.698)2×100% = 48.72% so that students’ behavioral engagement contributes 48.72% towards their speaking skill. It can be concluded that there is a positive significant correlation between students’ behavioral engagement and students’ speaking skill. It means that the students who engage behaviorally have good speaking skill and vice versa.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dengan teknik role play tanpa naskah. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas Model Kemmis dan Teggart. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di MA Daarul Mughni Bogor. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X yang berjumlah 27 siswa. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa secara signifikan di kelas X. Setelah proses pembelajaran melalui teknik bermain peran tanpa naskah, didapatkan hasil penelitian bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa pada siklus 1 adalah 55.56 dan siswa yang lulus KKM hanya18.52%. Kemudian peneliti melanjutkan penelitian pada siklus 2. Terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan pada hasil tes berbicara karena nilai rata-rata siswa pada siklus ini adalah 71.41 dan persentasenya adalah 48.15%. Terakhir, nilai rata-rata siswa pada siklus 3 adalah 85.93 dan 88.89% siswa lulus KKM. Dengan demikian, teknik bermain peran tanpa naskah dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Hal tersebut terlihat dari peningkatan nilai rata-rata siswa pada setiap siklusnya.

Abstract

Masalah utama dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris adalah kurangnya rasa percaya diri, hal ini tentu saja menghambat penguasaan Bahasa Inggris seseorang. Oleh karena itu, sebagai salah satu Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris melalui materi bertanya dan berpendapat (asking and giving opinion). Metode yang digunakan pada pelatihan ini adalah ceramah, tanya jawab dan diskusi yang diikuti oleh 25 peserta yang merupakan pegawai dari Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Daerah (BAPPEDA) Bogor Jawa Barat. Dikarenakan masih dalam keadaan pandemi Covid-19 maka pelatihan ini dilaksanakan secara daring yaitu dengan memanfaatkan aplikasi Zoom. Hasil yang diharapkan dari kegiatan ini adalah adanya peningkatan kepercayaan diri dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris terutama dalam bertanya dan berpendapat. Selain itu, para peserta diharapkan dapat mempraktikan materi yang diberikan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada hubungan antara keterlibatan kognitif siswa dengan kemampuan menulis. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode survei dan desain penelitian korelasional. Sebanyak 60 siswa SMK Swasta di Jakarta Timur dipilih secara acak sebagai sampel. Data keterlibatan kognitif siswa dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan angket yang diadopsi dari The Student Engagement Schools Questionnaire (SESQ) dan data kemampuan menulis siswa dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes menulis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan antara keterlibatan kognitif siswa dengan kemampuan menulis mereka. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dari hasil rxy=0,446 nilai Sig.=0,000<0,05, thitung=3,800 lebih tinggi dari ttabel=2,002. Koefisien determinasi diperoleh (0,446)2×100%=19,89% sehingga keterlibatan kognitif siswa memberikan kontribusi 19,89% terhadap kemampuan menulis mereka.

Abstract

Kurangnya rasa percaya diri dan perbendaharaan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris menjadi masalah utama bagi hampir semua orang di Indonesia terutama para pelajar dan remaja dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Tim kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang merupakan salah satu wujud Tri Dharma perguruan tinggi, oleh karennya menyelenggarakan kegiatan pelatihan yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan esensial phrasal verbs. Sebanyak 30 peserta yang merupakan remaja Mesjid Baitul Halim Jakarta Selatan mengikuti kegiatan ini secara tatap muka langsung. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini adalah ceramah, tanya jawab dan latihan bicara atau dialog. Dengan diselenggarakannya kegiatan ini, diharapkan adanya peningkatan kepercayaan diri dan perbendaharaan kosa kata dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, para peserta diharapkan dapat mempraktikan materi yang diberikan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari agar kemampuan komunikasi Bahasa Inggris mereka dapat meningkat menjadi lebih baik.

Abstract

Word comprehension is the essential learning for students to learn English well and correctly, because it is the way to improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery to can practice the students’ ability in understand the reading text English well and correctly. The problem the writer had outlined in this research deals largely with the study of reading. The subject of this research was twenty-eight students at the eighth grades of SMPN 273 Jakarta. The design of the research was classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles; in cycle I was done with two meeting and cycle II was done with two meetings. In this research the students were given pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment. The research aimed to find out whether the used crossword puzzle game technique could increase word comprehension the students in English mastery. The data collection technique in this research was observation, field note, test, and documentation. The purposes of given pre-test and post-test are to know how far the students’ word comprehend in English before and after being given treatment. The criteria of students’ who got score at least 70. The class could be said successful in achieving the material if 85% of the students in that class got score at least 70 and they had activation at class more than 50%. The average of pre-test score in cycle I was 65 or 10 students got pass score, and post-test 1 70.7 or 16 students got good score and the average post-test 2 in cycle II was 77.8 or 24 students got good score. This fact showed that teaching English by using crossword puzzle game technique can increase word comprehension in reading English

Abstract

The study’s goal is to discover and to investigate how students’ grammatical knowledge and sense of self-worth influence their capacity for effective oral expression empirically. The researchers adopted a quantitative strategy and used a survey to gather information. Seventy-three students were selected at random from the population of students at selected Private Vocational High Schools in East Jakarta. In order to verify the hypotheses, a multiple regression analysis was performed. The study yielded the following findings. Self-Esteem and grammatical competence go hand in hand when it comes to a student’s ability to communicate clearly. The fact shows that Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and Fo= 25.662. Students' fluency with grammar has a major bearing on how well they can express themselves verbally since Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and to= 3.788 demonstrate this to be the case. Students' confidence in their own abilities has a major bearing on how well they can express themselves. This is evidenced by the congruence between the values Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and to= 4.921.

Abstract

Community service is the practical implementation of science, technology, art, and culture directly into society aimed at helping a particular community in various activities without expecting anything in return. In 2022, English Language and Literature study program lecturers held an English Conversation Workshop on Like and Dislike of children at Ar-Ridho Orphanage, Depok, West Java. The purpose of this workshop is to improve participants' English skills, especially speaking. Global competition is increasingly fierce demanding the creation of quality human resources, one of which is by having international communication skills, namely using English. A total of 20 participants attended this workshop face-to-face. The methods used are the lecture method and the role-play technique. With the implementation of this workshop, participants are expected to be able to enhance their confidence and motivation to speak and practice the material provided in daily conversations.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to enhance students' listening comprehension by using YouTube videos. This study employed classroom action research Kemmis and Taggart’s design as its methodology. There were thirty- five of non-English major students in the subject. The findings demonstrate a significant improvement in students' listening comprehension. After the teaching and learning process using YouTube videos, it reveals that the students' mean score in cycle 1 was 68.3, with 68.57% passing the minimum standard score. It continued to cycle 2 with a mean score of 71.0 and a passing percentage of 85.71%, indicating a significant improvement in listening test results. In cycle 3, students' mean score was 84.2, and 94.29% passed the minimum standard score. Hence, the implementation of YouTube videos as a learning media can help students to enhance their listening comprehension. It is proven by the improvement of students’ mean score and their learning performance in each cycle.

Abstract

Mifasol Learning House is a non-profit organization that works for the community with the goal of providing additional education for underprivileged children in Depok, West. The children are given a variety of training materials to help them improve their insight and knowledge so that they can compete. English language training is one of the learning materials available at this study center. This is due to the students' lack of fundamental English knowledge. Correct and accurate English vocabulary is one of the fundamentals and the main issue that students face. Based on this, lecturers in the English Language and Literature study program at Bina Sarana Informatika University participate in community service activities. This activity is packaged as training aimed at increasing English vocabulary acquisition using the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS). Two cycles are used in the training method. Each cycle is divided into four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The findings of this training demonstrate that VSS can be used to improve English vocabulary acquisition. The increase in the amount of understanding understood by students in cycles I and II demonstrates the improvement in student learning outcomes. In cycle I, the average test score was 58.2. In cycle II, the average test score was 70.2. The conclusion of this activity is that the VSS strategy can be used to improve students' English vocabulary acquisition. Rumah Belajar Mifasol adalah organisasi nirlaba yang bekerja untuk masyarakat dengan tujuan membantu memberikan pendidikan tambahan bagi anak-anak kurang mampu di Depok, Barat. Di tempat ini, anak-anak tersebut mendapat berbagai materi pelatihan untuk menunjang wawasan dan pengetahuan mereka agar mampu berdaya saing. Salah satu materi pembelajaran yang diberikan pada rumah belajar ini adalah pelatihan Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini dikarenakan kurangnya pengetahuan dasar bahasa Inggris peserta didik. Kosakata bahasa Inggris yang benar dan akurat merupakan salah satu hal yang fundamental dan menjadi permasalahan utama yang dihadapi siswa. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, dosen pada program studi Bahasa Inggris dan Sastra Inggris Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika melakukan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat. Kegiatan ini dikemas dalam bentuk pelatihan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan perolehan kosakata bahasa Inggris menggunakan Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS). Metode pelatihan yang digunakan terdiri dari dua siklus. Tiap siklus terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Hasil pelatihan ini menunjukan bahwa VSS dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan perolehan kosakata Bahasa Inggris. Peningkatan hasil belajar peserta didik ditunjukkan dengan meningkatnya jumlah kosakata yang dipahami oleh peserta didik pada siklus I dan II. Nilai rata-rata hasil belajar pada siklus I adalah 58,2. Nilai rata-rata tes hasil belajar pada siklus II adalah 70,2. Kesimpulan pada kegiatan ini adalah bahwa penerapan strategi VSS dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan perolehan kosakata bahasa Inggris peserta didik.
