Abstract

High thermal mass modern building materials are unsuitable to be used in the tropics due to their thermos-physical properties and the ability in absorbing solar radiation, storing and transferring heat into the building, affecting the high indoor air temperature, hence, reducing thermal comfort. However, due to the high demand for building, utilization of this material is avoidable. This study investigated the heat transfer through building envelope materials and their effect on the indoor air temperature of the building through field measurement using a thermal camera and a handle wind meter. The results found that the ceiling is the part of the building which gained the highest indoor surface temperature which reaches 38.6 °C at the apex point at 2pm but decreased significantly to 30.4 °C at 6 pm. Meanwhile, the inner of the northeast wall gained 33.1 °C at the peak temperature and stayed above 30 °C until 10 pm. The indoor air temperature of this unit housing was 36.3 °C at 2 pm with the temperature difference between outdoor and indoor was 2.5 °C. At night, the indoor air temperature was 3.8 °C higher than the outside temperature.

Abstract

The building sector ranks second behind the fossil fuel burning industry. This figure may significantly rise when the total number of buildings and cooling demands increases, as well as poor HVAC system usage. In tropical climates such as Indonesia, building energy consumption is dominated by cooling loads on air conditioners to reduce indoor temperatures. This study focuses on the orientation of buildings in tropical climates on the amount of cooling load in a mid-rise rental office tower: WTC 5 in Jakarta. Several Energy Plus simulations utilising real building characteristics were performed to assess the impact and capacity of cooling loads on various building levels. The current 45°N building is turned clockwise, and cooling demands are computed and compared. The evidence found from simulations in five building scenarios shows several data on each building floor. The south-oriented building can maximise the lowest cooling load of 7.47 kWh, which is quite far from the existing building and the east-west orientation is 7.72 kWh and 7.80 kWh at the same time. The resulting curve can be interpreted that the orientation of the building has an enormous impact in terms of the effect of cooling loads on buildings, especially in tropical climates.

Abstract

Public places that provide a secure, welcoming, and beautiful environment are becoming increasingly important to enhance community welfare. The government is attempting to enhance public services in Salatiga's Tingkir sub-district by creating an integrated public space design for the neighbourhood. Presenting this integrated public space is difficult as it must allow for various community activities in a typical community area, including sports, education, recreation, and events. In response to this problem, a passive design strategy that optimises building operations and conserves resources by considering context and microclimate elements is given in the design of a public space. These include modifications to the traditional Javanese stilt house form, skylights for daylighting, and roof protection against predicted excessive rains and sunshine. Integrated public space planning aims to fulfil many communities' requirements and provide a visually stunning and sustainable environment for everyone via these strategies. This study's most effective passive design techniques are adapting the traditional stilt house model to increase natural ventilation on artificial cooling systems and roof protection as shading, which can effectively regulate temperature. These methods are anticipated to enhance public spaces' overall sustainability and livability, transforming them into ecologically conscious and neighbourhood-focused hubs of activity and engagement.

Abstract

Achieving net-zero energy building (NZEB) status requires accurate energy use intensity (EUI) calculations, as conventional methods often fail to capture the complexity of design and climatic conditions. In this research, a parametric energy modeling approach was used to conduct 1,350 simulations and analyze the impact of design parameters on building EUI. These simulations covered six building types—an existing building and I-, L-, T-, U-, and H-shaped buildings—across eight locations in different climate zones. A case study was conducted in Busan, Korea, where on-site measurements were obtained using portable devices to validate the simulation results. I-shaped buildings exhibited the lowest EUI, reaching 109 kWh/m²/yr at 0° and 180° orientations. The simulation results indicated that building orientations of 140°, 90°, 135°, and 270° tended to produce higher EUI values, whereas 0° and 180° showed lower EUI values of 122 and 123 kWh/m²/yr, respectively. The use of triple-pane insulated glass effectively reduced the I-shaped building's EUI to 103 kWh/m²/yr. Implementing photovoltaic (PV) systems further reduced the EUI significantly, with the I-shaped building achieving an EUI of −14 kWh/m²/yr at a 20% PV efficiency. Analysis using an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model revealed that the climate zone, PV area, and type of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system significantly affected the EUI. This model, processed using Colab, was highly effective, with an R-squared value of 0.99, a root mean square error of 4.57, and a mean absolute error of 1.99. These findings demonstrate that the XGBoost model can effectively capture complex data patterns and can be used for high-accuracy EUI estimation. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2025-011-03-06 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

A power logger is a device that has an electrical energy consumption monitoring function with an embedded data storage system to understand energy consumption patterns and improve the efficiency of energy usage. However, building meters without calibration causes inaccurate measurements and information. Therefore, the study reports a simple method to enhance any system's measurement quality via an Internet of Things (IoT)-based DC Power Logger case.  The IoT system built in the Blynk application enables the power logger to operate remotely and was integrated into a Google spreadsheet page to facilitate real-time data storage with an INA219 sensor as the measurement module. The calibration process of the power logger was conducted by comparing the measurement results obtained from the power logger with measurements obtained from a Sanwa multimeter. As a result, the calibration process ensures enhanced accuracy and precision of power logger measurements, which was validated by the validation process.
