Abstract

Managing dance movement elements is crucial for maintaining endurance and movement quality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of applying diaphragmatic breathing on dancer endurance. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design. The first phase, qualitative in nature, aimed to formulate hypotheses concerning the endurance issues faced by dancers in choreography courses. The second phase tested these hypotheses through experiments, incorporating control variables between two groups: Group 1, trained in dance movements using diaphragmatic breathing, and Group 2, solely trained in movements. The experiment took place at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh, with six female dancers enrolled in choreography classes randomly divided into two groups. None of the participants had prior experience with diaphragmatic breathing techniques while dancing. The study utilized a sphygmomanometer and oximetry for measurement. The endurance test involved dancing to a metronome for 5 minutes at tempos of 100, 110, and 120 without interruption. The results indicated that the respiratory frequency of dancers using diaphragmatic breathing was more stable compared to the group that did not employ this technique. These findings suggest that incorporating diaphragmatic breathing alternately while dancing can serve as a recommendation for maintaining dancers' endurance, particularly for students at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh.

Abstract

Abstract

The process of creating dance cannot exclude motion as the main medium for expressing dance. So that empirical experience is needed in the creative process of creating, including basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the management of motion and its supporting elements. Knowledge and insight into the science of choreography is felt to be given to non-formal institutions such as communities/art studios as a form of synergy between agencies in an effort to promote culture as stated in Law No. 5 of 2017 concerning the Advancement of Culture. This article is part of Community Service involving the Budaya Aceh Nusantara (Buana). The priority of partner problems is the lack of insight and skills of human resources in the process of creating new works, especially innovative dances originating from traditional arts. Solutions to solving partner problems are carried out in the form of training including dance movement management training and the process of creating dance accompaniment music in the form of skill transfer or providing joint creation experience. The training was conducted using Jacqueline Smith's choreographic approach and the process of creating accompaniment music through digital audio software processing techniques. The training methods include: planning, implementing (acting), monitoring or observing and assessment (reflecting or evaluating). From the results of the training, it can be seen that the participants' skills increase in the management of motion and the use of audio software in the process of creating dances. On the other hand, the training module becomes reading material that the community can always use as a reference and guide in independent practice. The implementation of the training is expected to have a significant impact in increasing the productivity of creating dances at the Buana communities

Abstract

The Element of Motion and Its Application in Seudati Dance: The Creative Process at Aneuk Metuah Studio, Aceh Besar. This article is the research result which was conducted in Aceh Besar, which led to training activities to solve problems that occurred in the Aneuk Metuah Studio. The problem with the studio is about the dancers’ body resistance when dancing the Seudati dance, namely that the dancers get tired quickly, which impacts the quality of the dance movement. The program is oriented towards increasing creativity in managing the energy element when dancing the Seudati traditional dance. This type of research is qualitative research using the action research method (action research). The researcher identified specific problems and determined actions as solutions to these problems. Furthermore, the research refers to the construction method of creating dance in Jacqueline Smith’s book, translated by Ben Suharto, entitled Dance Composition: A Practical Guide for Teachers. The stages of activity include observation, determination of focus and preparation of training materials, transfer of materials, the performance of the Seudati dance, and evaluation of activities. The action is carried out in the form of training in the management of the energy element when dancing the Seudati dance. The material is delivered through audiovisual media and demonstrates it. Based on the process and the research results, it is found that the potential for the sustainability of the creative process can be carried out by the children of Aneuk Metuah studio in every training process in the future. It is hoped that this activity will have a long-term impact on the trainees in managing the elements of movement energy when dancing and increasing the artistic creativity in the studio. Keywords: dance; training; elements of motion; Seudati
