Abstract

Hypertension is one of the deadliest diseases in the world that can attack anyone, both young and old. Hypertension sufferers have poorer sleep quality compared to those with normal blood pressure. This research is a quantitative research using a Quasi-Experimental Design. This research aimed to determine the effect of a combination of warm water foot baths and lavender essential oil aromatherapy on sleep quality in adults with hypertension. Wilcoxon test results (p = 0.004), which means that there is an effect of combination therapy with warm water foot baths and lavender essential oil aromatherapy on the sleep quality of adults with hypertension. The feet have many thermoreceptors and a high density of capillaries. Soaking your feet in warm water can help prepare the body for sleep naturally and quickly trigger peripheral vasodilation. There are two main ways to apply aromatherapy: topically and through inhalation. Lavender essential oil is said to activate the limbic system, especially the hippocampus and amygdala. Combining warm foot baths with aromatherapy would be a rational approach to the management of sleep disorders in adult patients with hypertension.

Abstract

Individuals with diabetes mellitus frequently experience difficulties adhering to recommended dietary regimens, resulting in unstable blood glucose levels and an increased risk of further complications. One significant factor influencing dietary adherence is self-efficacy, or patients' belief in their own ability to manage their diet. This paper investigates the relationship between self-efficacy and dietary adherence in outpatients with diabetes mellitus. This study employed a correlational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The population comprised 170 outpatients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus registered at the endocrine outpatient clinic of Jemursari Islamic Hospital, Surabaya. The sample consisted of 119 respondents, using simple random sampling. The instruments were the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES) questionnaire to measure self-efficacy and the Dietary Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) to assess dietary adherence. Data were analyzed using Spearman's Rank correlation test. The results indicated that half of the respondents (64; 50.4%) had low self-efficacy, and nearly half (55; 46.2%) had moderate diet adherence. Statistical analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between self-efficacy and dietary adherence in outpatients with diabetes mellitus (p = 0.000), with a strong correlation coefficient of 0.851. In conclusion, self-efficacy is associated with dietary adherence among outpatients with diabetes mellitus. The higher the self-efficacy, the greater the dietary adherence to the diabetes mellitus diet. Healthcare professionals should emphasize simple and repetitive educational approaches, particularly targeting older adult patients with low to moderate educational levels, to enhance patients' confidencein consistently and independently adhering to Diabetes dietary regimens.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus remains a prevalent global disease and can lead to both physical and psychological complications. One of the most common psychological impacts is diabetes distress, which refers to emotional stress caused by the continuous demands of managing diabetes. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between diabetes self-management and diabetes distress among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Jemursari Islamic Hospital, Surabaya. Methods: This study used a correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 174 patients were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The independent variable was diabetes self-management education, and the dependent variable was diabetes distress. Data collection instruments included the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ) and the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS). Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Result: The results showed a significant relationship between diabetes self-management and diabetes distress (p = 0.001), indicating that higher levels of self-management education are associated with lower levels of diabetes distress. Conclusion: This study concludes that better diabetes self-management is significantly associated with lower levels of diabetes distress among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Improving patients’ ability to manage their condition through consistent and comprehensive self-management education may help reduce psychological distress and enhance overall quality of life.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is associated with a progressive decline in patients' quality of life (QoL). Self-efficacy and adherence are critical behavioral determinants that influence disease management and outcomes. This study examines the correlation between self- efficacy and adherence to quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study used a correlational analytic research design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at Islamic Hospital Jemursari, Surabaya, from August to October 2024. The population consisted of 307 patients with diabetes, and 174 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires: the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES), the Adherence to Diabetes Questionnaire (ADQ), and the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL)questionnaire. Data analysis was the Spearman's Rank correlation test. The results showed that nearly half of the respondents reported low self-efficacy, most had low adherence, and 60.3% experienced poor QoL. Spearman analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between self-efficacy and QoL (r = 0.647; p < 0.000), and between adherence and QoL (r = 0.684; p < 0.000). In conclusion, self-efficacy and adherence are strong predictors of quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Jemursari Islamic Hospital, Surabaya. Future research should investigate interventions to enhance self-efficacy and adherence, particularly among patients with a poor quality of life, to develop more effective strategies for supporting diabetes care.

Abstract

Introduction & Aim: Previous research at Jemursari Islamic Hospital, Surabaya, demonstrated a strong positive relationship between self-efficacy and dietary adherence among people with diabetes mellitus. The finding was translated into the YAKIN 3J Program (confidence in managing food according to Amount, Type, and Schedule), which aimed to strengthen self-efficacy and dietary adherence among people with diabetes mellitus in Tembok Dukuh Village, Bubutan District, Surabaya. Method of Activity: Community service was conducted from June to August 2026 with 35 participants. Activities included baseline assessment, simple and repeated 3J dietary education, behavioral goal setting, menu and portion practice, peer sharing, family involvement, food-monitoring records, and weekly mentoring. Evaluation used the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES) and Dietary Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) before and after the program, with changes analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: Participants were predominantly women (63%); the largest age group was 40–60 years (40%), and 34% had senior high school education. Sixty percent were recorded as not taking medication, 51% had lived with diabetes for less than five years, and 40% were recorded in the >200 mg/dL blood-glucose category. In the illustrative pre-post analysis currently used in the manuscript, median self-efficacy increased from 53.0 to 66.0 and median dietary adherence from 43.0 to 54.0 (both p<0.001; large effect sizes). Discussion: Participant characteristics support the need for practical, repeated, and individualized education. Strengthening mastery experiences, peer support, verbal encouragement, family support, and self-monitoring may increase confidence and consistency in applying the 3J diet.
